In this video, I react for the first time to System Of A Down performing "Chop Suey". In this video, I analyse their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate Serj Tankian's vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great.
This was the second installment in my SOAD journey! I also enjoyed Daron Malakian's vocal contribution very much!

Apparently Serj didn't know how to finish the song, so the producer told him to just take a random book in his library, open it and read the first line he came across, and it was the "Father into your hands" bit, which fits so well!

Referencing the fact that Christ willingly let himself be crucified. "Father, why have you forsaken me" were famously his last words by some accounts and "I cry when angels deserve to die" can definitely reference the crucifixion as well.

How is it that you can take a song that I've listened to COUNTLESS times over the years and STILL manage to bring entertainment and value to it. Not to mention you hit the nail on the head first listen as far as meaning goes. One additional thing I would add to the meaning though is while it can affect people in a sad way calling out societies indifference or disdain, it can also act as a shout to those who feel ignored saying "WE SEE YOU!". I have watched a LOT of reaction videos to this song and you are the first one to not only get the overall meaning but every nuance of the song as well. Absolutely FANTASTIC reaction video. Thank you

I don't think John gets enough credit for his playing on this track. His choice to play just behind the beat through most of the song creates a real sense on dissonance that you hardly notice at first. Also, his snare-snare-kick pattern during the verses is a little reminiscent of a heartbeat to me. It isn't until the bridge that he seems to get squarely in the groove. SOAD is one of those bands where every instrument has an important part to provide. Another great post, Lolli. Cheers from Florida.

This is an absolutely valid point, what's also interesting is how Shavo quietly glues together this and the guitar lines. Certain lines are allowed to simply sustain whereas others are (if my limited theory knowledge is correct?) Arpeggiated to meet the start of the bar or line. They're interesting enough to give a bit of flavour, draw the ear in the right direction but not overly busy. A good example of a bass player really on his game. What a rhythm section!
@Christopher-md7tf

Doesn't sound behind the beat to me at all. Even if it were, it couldn't creat dissonance lol, that's a harmonic/melodic thing.

I wrote it in the live chat, let me re-phrase it here in the comments so it's more permanent for you. You wrote how you felt in a negative way for "missing out" after so many of us started "singing" the lyrics in the chat. Never, ever apologize for doing that. Ours is such a chaotic world "missing out" is part of the process, it cannot be otherwise, and no sin of ours. The only people who need to apologize are those who, so closed minded, never wander outside their tiny bubble they erect around themself not for a need of self preservation or fear, but for laziness or out of spite. Watching you enjoy these small-big parts of our lives is such a pleasure, thank you for another analysis. Also, if I may, as a general suggestion stalking musicians in either a creepy or in most non-creepy ways is frowned upon in many countries.

My friend Andrés, whose father was in the band Beauregard Ajax, told me that Serj had a small issue towards the end of the song. So the producer of this track told him to pick a book off of the book shelf in the studio. He then had Serj turn to a random page. That's where we hear the verse "Father into your hands I condemn my spirit, father into your hands, why have you forsaken me, in your arms forsaken me, in your eyes forsaken me, in your thoughts forsaken me, in your heart forsaken me". I thought that was a cool piece of trivia everyone needed to know.

I've seen that factoid (atributed to one of the band members in an interview) before, but I honestly dont' believe it. I feel like it's WAY too on the nose to have been chosen at random. "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit" is the last thing Jesus said before he died, and in the context of a song about suicide.... Also, as someone who is really good at depression, the idea of being forsaken by god is extremely real. My guess is that a post-9/11 anger at the christian god from a 'forign' band does not look good, so they came up with a story distancing themselves from the meaning. I also feel the same way about 'Don't fear the reaper' by Blue Oyster Cult: They say it isn't about suicide, but come on.

The more I watch your reactions, listening to your interpretation of the songs, you being able to easily replicate all kinds of vocal styles and your understanding of the song's structure, I strongly suspect that beneath the humour and entertainment, lies a true musical prodigy. 😀

The song is well thought through and written both musically and lyrically. The part at the end when he says Father into your hands I commend my spirit, and those were the last words Jesus said before he died. It gets me every time.

I must say that was a bloody brilliant reaction and analysis. I really love that you have your own style of looking at lyrics and visuals and you truly are very knowledgeable in music theory and whatnot. I learned a lot of new things and also heard a different interpretation of the lyrics on Chop Suey! I really hope you react to more System of a Down songs their songs are just pure art. Trust me... going down the SOAD rabbit hole is really interesting, they have songs that are represented in different ways and I bet you'll love them. Serj Tankian also has a solo career you should definitely listen to some of his songs too. I can also see you reacted to Wolf Totem on your channel, did you know that Serj recently collabed with The Hu and Daniel Laskiewicz in a song called Black Thunder? I'll definitely be looking forward to watching more of your content in the future, thanks :)

Great analysis. The inspiration for this song that I’ve read the band discuss in interviews is the idea that the way a person passes can retroactively change how other people view/value that person’s life. E.g. the loss of someone who succumbs to addiction or mental illness might be treated as less tragic than if had they passed some other way. If you’re looking for more SOAD, BYOB is a fun one. ✌️

I still just love this song... The ending chorus is really something special. You take Serj and Daron... neither by most counts that great singers in a professional sense.. but put them together and it just blends so well together. And how they flip the high and low octaves on each verse to harmonize...so good

Awesome reaction. You should do "B.Y.O.B" next. In my opinion, it better shows off Serj's versatility as a vocalist. Daron's vocals are also a little more prominent.

Wow this is the first time I've watched one of your videos. I find myself watching heaps of reaction videos by vocal coaches etc, but personally I think you are one of the best since another famous lady, who is quite a veteran from the U.S. possibly started all this. Your knowledge, explanations and interpretation of songs is a breathe of fresh air. I shall subscribe and watch more❤

Wow. Wow. Wow. I grew up listening to SOAD. I have since transitioned away from the genre as I've gotten older, but still appreciate their talent, forward thinking lyrics, and different style (influenced by their Armenian roots no doubt). So, I have watched a TON of reactions to their songs and you are the FIRST I've ever seen who understood the lyrics AND the title in the first go. Your intelligence shines as does your empathy, and you have an amazing voice as well. The total package. You're also beautiful, which is simply a compliment btw, but true and needs pointed out imo. You just earned a follow by being yourself. Amazing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and genuinely taking the time to think this through.
