The producer of this track said that Serj couldn't come up with an ending for the song, so he took him into his personal library and told him to just pick up any book and flip to a random page and read it to get his juices flowing. Serj happened to pick up the Bible and flipped to the passage: "“Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, 'Father, into your hands I commit my spirit! ' And having said this he breathed his last”. He liked the phrase so much, and it fit the theme of the song so well, that he just took the words verbatim and created that crazy ending.
@Dipsydont19 күн бұрын
I may the guy saying the quiet part out loud, but this is the part in the bible where Jesus technically kills himself by asking God to take his spirit. Luke literally says that phrase. Take that into self righteous suicide as you will. For those who wonder where phrases come from in English "gave up the ghost" Is in the same bible passage. The song is awesome. I love SOD

The original title of this song was "Suicide" but the studios, somewhat understandably, couldn't allow this. So Serj, tongue in cheek, named it " CHOP" as in "CUT OUT" and "SUEY" as in "SUICIDE"-- with a reference at 2:00 eating Chinese takeout visibly unamused.

This is actually not the case, although I always thought it was i.e. the studio not allowing it. Serj said that it was the bands decision to change it in his autobiography. He preferred the new title and as well as the original not being a great title anyway, he said it was because the song isn't about Suicide anyway.

I think you’re projecting a bit, based on your own memories around that time lol. I’m not American and I didn’t get that sense from this album. Frustration, anger, sadness sure, but SOAD has always been a political band singing about all the greed and pain in the world

Love to see your reactions and facial expressions during the video. It was like I could hear you saying what you actually said later when you paused the video. That was great!

he says father... what do you mean?

You were right the 1st time. Its a reference to a Bible verse, Luke23:46. "Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands, I commit my spirit! - And having said this, he breathed his last". It was the last phrase of Jesus Christ upon the cross. It is a powerful moment, and one that indicated the end of Mosiac Law. Also, when he sings, " Father, Why have you forsasken me?" Its also a quotation of words Jesus said while he was crucified.

Since you've taken a first look at Chop Suey, I EXTREMELY URGE YOU to look at Serj Tankien's isolated vocals for this music. It is a god sent. Also, you HAVE GOT to react to Hypnotize anf Forest. For me two of their greatest songs and vocal delivery.

On the podcast "Broken Record" that features Rick Rubin(who produced Chop Suey), Rubin explains how the lead song writer/singer created the bridge part after writing down a random passage of a book he picked up off the shelf in the library of the house they were recording this song at. It worked perfectly. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4HCkKSgi6dsisU)

That eireness is the same siren-like chromatic notes wavering in-out continuously, both during the verse and the chorus. SOAD was the master of transitions. Period.

It's just so much. They bring it all and they bring it ot the max. So beautiful. So powerful. So much contrast. Some songs peaks my interest make me feel a certain way. This song seems to fill me. When those harmonies hit it is just such a full smooth sound and it's such a contrast to the previous segment.
