What a beautiful quilt. Your Grandaughter is going to love it. I took a free motion quilt class and the teacher talked about gloves, or the stuff they use for counting cash. You can get it at office supply store near the paper tube for coins and money counters. It's not tacky and doesn't leave a residue. You just put a dab on your finger tips.

Good evening Beth, I love that polka dot sheet that you have used at the back of the quilt, it as all the colours in it, but shows them up in an ordered way. I was told that you make these quilts not only for your own friends and family, but for the new friends that you are yet to meet. What a wonderful way to use up scraps that take up room just lying there, but being used to make something so useful but so "comforting" at the same time. I hope that your granddaughter will love her new hugs from her Granny, she can wrap this around her when needing that hug from the one person that matters to her most. Thank you for sharing this lovely bits and bobs quilt, sending you hugs from Norah, Glenochil, Scotland

Thank you Beth. This quilt is just lovely. I've been using safety pins to pin my quilt layers together for over 25 years. But it looks like that 505 spray is worth a try. Also, for whatever it's worth, I use Machingers gloves. They let me feel the quilt, and I usually do not have to take them off for some other task. They last a long time. Happy Holidays 😊
@juliatepe5760 Жыл бұрын
The 505 spray is great! I recently tried a cheaper brand, but will be going back to 505 for big projects. For smaller items, I use Elmers School glue stick.
@carolg.6838 Жыл бұрын
@@juliatepe5760 I have a quilt to sandwhich and as it is a Christmas gift I can't wimp out. I used the curved pins before and occasionally had a pucker on the back (probably it was ny fault and not the pins). A friend uses the 505 and another KZbinr says 505 is better than a different spray. Does it have much of an odor and does the odor linger? I have chemical "scent"sitivities but boy Beth makes the spray look so easy. Another friend with wrist issues uses pieces of 5'8 inch wide fusible that comes on a roll. Puts some in the corners and sprinkles pieces throughout and uses the iron to fuse with no problems quilting. I might be returning 3 pigs of safety pins! I bought some of the adhesive.
@juliatepe5760 Жыл бұрын
@@carolg.6838 I use the spray outside and detect very little odor if any. Even when I bring the sandwich into the sewing room, I don't detect any odor. I use a few pins at the corners mostly for my piece of mind. Good luck!

You know what was great about this project? You made a beautiful quilt from scraps and thriftiness. Not all of us can afford precuts. Also, everything was done on the sewing machine. Yay, no longarm. Not all of us can afford a longarm, don't have the extra room for it, and we can't afford paying to have someone else quilt it. These are the reasons I keep watching your videos.

Just read some of the comments about using sheets for backing one of our op-shops will donate doona covers to our group to use on charity quilts we get at least 2backings from each cover and often matching pillow slips that make good blocks for the top. This op-shop is in a reasonably affluent rural town so covers are of great quality with hardly any wear and often children's characters on them.

Beth I have trouble with my quilt puckering when I use the spray and/or pins. Watching you quilt just not sure what my problem is. The last quilt I'm working on thought I would quilt a fancy stitch on my sashing first and then quilt in the blocks always starting in the middle each time but still had puckering problems and had to unpick a lot in the sashing. Love your binding fabric.

Machine quilting is tricky. My quilts are rarely perfect… once their done though I’m happy even with the imperfections 😉
@deborahmeares1048 Жыл бұрын
I know using the gloves can be a little tricky but I've noticed that if you cut out the pointer finger and the thumb the tip gives you a little more control and if you want to make the gloves fit your hand better turn them inside out and sew them a little bit smaller so that they fit your hands better it makes a big difference

Hi Beth, I’ve been piecing for years but I just started experimenting with machine quilting. I have a question about starts and stops and thread tails. I noticed that as you moved from one setting triangle to the next you snipped your threads. What do you do with the top and bottom thread tail?
@bethshibleyquilts Жыл бұрын
I had thought to mention this topic during the video and forgot! My machine cuts the thread and the tiny ends don't bother me. If you want NO ends showing you will want to pull the bottom thread up BEFORE beginning to sew , making two long strands. When you are done sewing you do the same leaving TWO long strands on the top of the quilt. After quilting you take a needle, thread the two strands into the needle and HIDE the threads by hand. This takes quite a while when you start and stop as often as I did with this quilt. HOpe that helps. A good topic for a future video. 👌
