Betsy Lake | High Uintas Wilderness, Utah

This was a quick trip to go in and scout out Granddaddy Basin for a longer trip that we would be doing later in the year. It was early season conditions with blowdowns, snow and high water.
We got a little turned around while we were making our way down the pass, but its all good and we had a great adventure!

Utah has quite a few excellent places to backpack, but if you get the chance to go to the High Uintas, take it!

I just took my sons up toward Grandaddy on Sunday night. Wife and daughters went up Monday and stayed at Heart Lake for a night. Ranger was there at the trailhead informing us of a bear that had been frequenting camps around Betsy Lake recently and slashed out someone's gear. I found out yesterday from another friends FB post that he had been camped between Grandaddy and Betsy over the weekend just prior to us arriving up there and bailed out in the middle of their 2nd night because of the bear. It had slashed through a tent in another camp a night or two before to get to someone's coke apparently. It then went into another camp where they had a fire and fired some gunshots to try and scare it away and neither seemed to bother it so those campers moved out. It then went into another camp next to my friends camp. That's when my friend and his group opted to leave in the middle of their 2nd night there, despite taking all the precautions they could. Bear clearly had associated tents and camps with food and was checking them all out in the area looking for more scents to investigate apparently. My friend reported to the USFS and DWR. That may have been what prompted the ranger to be up there investigating during the time we were up there. My guess is DWR is going to have to get involved now and take action with the bear given all that activity from over the weekend.

@@mountainwanderer Nope. Never saw any sign of it. But we camped in hammocks off trail a bit south of Hades Pass. Then went up and over to Heart Lake to do some fishing the following day. My sons are 5 and 8, so still taking it a little easy with them.
