Heather, if you can get captive bred ones, you are good to go. The wild's take a bit of medication to get them through acclimation, but, once acclimated, they have been hardy fish in my experience.

Wow. You have no problems fish breeding for you. Master fishman. Size wise, are the wilds bigger or smaller than average bettas one finds in the stores?

They have shorter fins, but the body size if about the same as a large male betta's. I would say they top out at about 2 inches.
