I've never seen anyone do this but I figured it out myself years ago. It just makes sense. It's like when sewing pillows....you need to sew a curve down to the point instead of sewing a straight line. A straight line will give you long, empty pointed corners where a curved line hugs the pillow insert, filling out the corners. Little tricks like this give professional results!

Thank you for explaining bag making so well. I have been asked to make several cloth, lined, zippered bags. Never made a bag before, just quilted. So I made one from scrap fabric. Mock up. I did not have a pattern, but I did it. I made boxed corners with a square bottom. But your way is so much easier. Your expectations for why you do things were wonderful. I learned so much. Thank you for this tutorial. I learned so much and have been "adjusting" a lot of patterns to ensure great boxed corners. I also went to a bag making retreat and adjusted your pattern to me a two tone zipper pouch. Many of the participants took that pattern and made their own versions as well. We had a ball thanks to you!! And all had lovely boxed corners!!

I don't cut the corners. I prefer to leave the corners and fold the fabric to get the triangle shape and then measure and mark your line. Sew on the line then cut the triangle off leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. What's nice about sewing is that it's all personal preference. This is a great tutorial for those that like to cut the corners out.

One of the best purse tutorials that I have watched ! Will have to check the pouch I’ve sewn to see the difference. Kept it very simple and that is super important to me. I just checked my my Blue Wren pouch die, I did the cut to make bottom lie flat. Super easy fix. I’ve made so many of these bags,but this tutorial gives very directions.

This was an AWESOME video! I have always had a problem and thought it was my sewing. I love that you related it to math (my husband was a math teacher). When I was in high school math (60 years ago) I could do the math equations, etc. but I never knew why or where I would use the math. You nailed the sewing and the math! Excellent video. As a long time clothing pattern maker, this is much the same as moving the dart. Also, frequently pattern making instruction doesn’t explain that while flat patterns are two dimensional, the body is three dimensional. I learned this from designers and from studying pattern draping. It all applies to zipper bag making. Excellent video!
