Check Dr. Alan Kapular & Carol Deppe's work on veggie & fruit breeding. Dr. Kapular (aka/mushroom) likes to dehybridize popular hybrids. Carol Deppe breeds for locally adapted cultivars that are also bred for better nutritional profiles. They're both fairly legendary plant breeders. Carol Deppe has published several books on home plant breeding.

A friend of mine had told me that this was Lester Burbank's secret, he would sometimes plant a million seeds looking for unique qualities. It should also be pointed out that the burbank potato 🥔 was grown from seed by Lester..it is pretty rare to see potatoes grown from seed but Lester was always looking for the random chance that genetics can play in nature. He is worth looking into as he really did make a difference.

And the Landrace idea is interesting. You have identified the plants easy to grow in this crazy weather zone. Now you are producing hardy varieties and hybrids for your soil and climate. Thank you for making gardening easy to understand.

My Louisiana Sweet citrus trees I bought when I was a kid (30 years ago) working the Produce department at Delchamps died to the ground and came back as the sour orange root stock. I'm planning on germinating the seeds and using them as root stock for other citrus. My apple seedling experiment was put on hold when the deer ate all of my new apple trees to the ground. Some of our Pak Choi bolted due to the unseasonably warm temps but we did eat quite a bit of it in soups. I'll try and save seed from them, the local feed & seed won't have any seeds in until at least January. I'll be growing it from now on in my Fall, Winter and Spring garden. I've bought and planted several varieties of peach that mature at different times in the season as well as some seed grown trees that I look forward to watching mature.

My lemon cucumber crossed with a pickling cucumber and volunteered this year...the result was a florescent yellow, orangish colored, 5 to 6 inch long cucumber...of you didn't catch it in time, it tasted horribly bitter...if you find it quick enough it was a nice, slightly lemon flavor

Congrats on the baby and thank the Lord safely. I bought some sort of hybrid Seminole pumpkin when I was in south Florida a few weeks ago. Supposed to be hardy yet the vines only run about 6 feet. Developed by one of the colleges here. If you want seeds hit me up. Otherwise have another Seminole that runs like crazy and makes good pumpkins just not super large. Let me know.

I am the youngest of 7, I have 8 of my own, my oldest sister has 10.... Big family's are the way to go. I'm very glad I found your channel you have the same mindset I do and I love it. It's funny you mentioned the issue with all the hype about veriaties that "do great" in this area or that. We live in Northwest Georgia and Cherokee Purple tomatoes are harloom that are supposed to do great here.... They NEVER do well here! Yet Roma and cherries do amazingly, go figure.... You have any suggestions for the vile Georgia red clay soil? So far we rotate our chicken yard. That has helped a lot with the crap ground we have, but not enough....

This same method could be used to make more heat-tolerant crops down here in Plant City (an odd microclimate that almost mimics zone 10, I call it Zone 9c)...Lord knows we could use more Florida-style Yankee crops like Seminole Pumpkins & Everglade Tomatoes.
@reeferfranklin2 жыл бұрын
I always thought you could do a survival style method & then use brix count to fine-tune your selections, because a plant that produces a higher brix count under conditions of privation would obviously be very nutrient dense under ideal conditions.

I agree.

Sure, new fruit varieties can be found from seedlings, just plant 1,000's of them, lots of luck. Where I live there are tons of wild apple trees, grown from seeds from homestead orchards. All Fall I sample those apple, out of over 100 trees there's 1 of them that didn't result in immediate spitting. There's a reason grafting has been around for over 3,000 years. Now some fruits are more prone to good seedlings, like peaches and apricots, your chancesa re much better with those. Do your homework before investing. years in growing a tree.
@davidthegood2 жыл бұрын
You can easily graft to change any type you don't like later. It just depends: are you adventurous or not? Some of those old orchards were pollinated by crabapples, too. If you do find a good one that isn't a spitter, be sure to save it.

Great video, thank you for sharing! God created all the genetic diversity at Creation. It gives variation within the kind as it moves to different locations. Can go from a wolf to a chiwahwa(spelling?) through selection, but you could not go the other way around without re-introducing lost genetics. Consequently, we can take advantage of this and select and reintroduce genetic traits that we like. God is good! Thank You Jesus!

I can see the appeal and appreciate the method but the God of the universe forbids sewing divers seed(lev 19:19) and large scale variety mixing(deut 22:9). I think it comes down to three points. God said don’t do it. You may find one novel beneficial property at the cost of 20 that took generations of selective breeding to isolate. And the general genetics is a pandoras box aka Jurassic park aka you were so preoccupied with whether you could, you didn't stop to think if you should.
