I use the RK-002 as my instant-IDM machine. I play a combination of triggered acoustic drums and electric drums and the cable goes from my drum module (Nord Drum 2) to my sampler-sequencer (Digitakt or MPC500). I use the RK-002 to add velocity dependent sample layers to my drums, to send midi CCs on certain drum hits. And as a way to find “magic sequences” in the drum hits that will then send program changes and sequence changes. This way I can build a framework for playing a jam on my drums only, switching to the drops and halftime basslines by playing certain fills, switching snares, and muting stuff when I play certain types of beats. It’s quite rigid really, but better than a simple loop for 30 minutes

Wondering if this is a good workaround to use the volca drum with a midi sequencer (ex an MPC 1000)? As of right now I don't think there is a way to assign each of the 6 parts to a midi controller, you can only trigger one sound at a time. If anyone has insight on this, would be much appreciated

Wait, is my understanding that this Arduino-equipped cable has a set of built-in Euclidean sequences that are selected by CC? Time to take a deeper dive.
@AudioPilz3 жыл бұрын
AFAIK this is correct, one of the variables seems to be determined by midi clock, the other one by CC

How much of this could be done with an evolution uc-17 or uc-33 tho (assuming configurations are just re-routing MIDI data)?
@AudioPilz3 жыл бұрын
I've been using UC-33s for over 15 years but I am not aware of any way to emulate the behavior of the RK. Software like Midi OX or the Logic Environment come to mind
@midininja37903 жыл бұрын
@@AudioPilz Pretty sure you can re-assign MIDI messages through the UCs, maybe Sysex something (was researching this years ago before Pajen, but can't find it now)? Haven't tried it, but it would be handy as you could save and load programs instead of re-flashing the cable. BTW... just found out you can use the UCs an a USB-MIDI or MIDI-USB interface (never knew that, hope it works with the APC40 mk1).
@midininja37903 жыл бұрын
...looking at the manual, it only sends MIDI from the MIDI in to USB MIDI out, so no cigar.

I'm trying to figure out if I'm just not using my devices fully, or I'm just lucky and my gear doesn't have weird midi hangups, or if I'm just the wrong kind of nerd? So some midi compatible gear won't receive midi notes from a sequencer? I'm suddenly terrified of buying more vintage gear lol
@crunchyfrog5553 жыл бұрын
It does as a general rule oif thumb mean the older the gear, the more chance of MIDI quirkiness to happen. But it's not as straightforward as that. It really depends on two things - what YOU use MIDI for, and what corners have been cut on the equipment. I mean, I have a DX7 and I'd never use it for anything more than either a master keyboard or recording notes directly or the synth itself, so it doesn't bother me. But some might want to do all manner of things. For instance, even with the Korg Volca Sample it is really rather limited MIDI wise as it's built down to a price. AudioPilz has touched on that. So yeah, if it hasn't affected you, then I wouldn't worry about it, as it likely won't be stuff you're using. But as always, research beforehand. Thanks to KZbin you can find out stuff like this easily now.

Hanging and lost midi notes are daily business for me (usually when computers and vintage gear is involved;)
@crunchyfrog5553 жыл бұрын
@@AudioPilz Agh that's a fair point. Typically when bunging the new and the old together ESPECIALLY computers, it's gonna happen. I tend to use computers purely for recording audio, so I thankfully skirt that one.

I watched this a while back thinking: What do I need this for... Well... how about a pseudo-polyphonic Evolver... Yeah! OK, I went insane trying to load the firmware, as I had recently gone back to using my old Edirol VStudio100 that didn't get recognised by the DUY... neither did any other instrument that had USB and MIDI (VG99, SY1000, Keystep37, Octatrack, Primova MIDX-20 and even tried my loopers, RC202 and Voicelive3...), but then I remembered I have two Blokas MIDI-Hubs under my desktops, and again, Blokas saves the day! Loaded firmware, works great though the Evolver isn't really made for this sort paraphonic kind of thing unless you sequence it like that. Still, great fun and great video, again!

I wonder would it be possible to make one of these for the Reface CS? I love mine to bits but I wonder if it's possible to use loopback to give it velocity sensitivity(the keyboard outputs velocity, so you'd just need to map it to volume, maybe cutoff)
