Are you struggling to remember what was taught in class this week? When coaches teach a different technique and concept every week, it can be hard to keep up and retain the information. BJJ as a body of knowledge is constantly growing and evolving with specialised techniques and strategies for both Gi and No-Gi grappling. JT & Joey dig deeper on what can help and hinder your learning at Jiu-Jitsu and why spending multiple sessions on one position or a sequence of attacks and defences can really help you achieve a good understanding and real learning.
Everybody learns differently but giving people more opportunity and greater exposure to skills is key, this might require a different approach to the way coaches are teaching week to week. Joey explains his recent experience having wins with his students learning back control and JT talks about how being competitive and not making mistakes can actually mess up your learning. When you struggle to remember what's being taught in class its hard to build your game and make progress, this is where you could benefit from choosing your own personal BJJ project and working on it consistently.

It's possible to attend weeks and weeks of jiu jitsu classes, or French classes, or whatever, and not actually do much deliberate practice in those classes. Learning a dynamic skill involves, firstly, finding the limits of your knowledge and capabilities, and then targeting and working in that not-quite-comfortable zone in a highly intentional and repetitious manner.

I’m a former rule follower and traditionalist. Moved away from that and now coach and train exclusively with the Constraints Led Approach. This is where learning lives.

The most frustrating part is when they're like "Oh let me gloss over something because everyone here already knows it." Then they walk around realize half the class doesn't know the thing.

Ecological approach. I’m a purple belt and I’m more technical then a lot of black belts, training only 3days a week

What’s your approach? I’m at 3-4 times a week and feel like I don’t get enough time to work on my own game. Tired of going through technique of the day

Study the art outside of class. Try to drill moves from your studies if you are given the time. Roll lighter. Try be creative. Don't try to win all the time. The more I go The less I feel I know. I'll never know everything. There was a time I thought I could. The learning is where the fun exists for a gay artist like myself.

I used to be taught techniques, and I regret every moment. Now, I've gone to an ecological school with overnight results. It makes me sad that schools still put students through technology.

At my club the best way to learn BJJ during rolling is to do absolutely no BJJ whatsoever get submitted and told you've just bamboozled yourself and never have it explained and fuel some army kid's ego.

I've been doing Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for the last 3-4 months and one thing I've really enjoyed about the combatives program is that it cycles through the same 36 techniques every month. I'm on my 4th time through the cycle and I feel like I'm really starting to click with the techniques. The muscle memory is just starting to lock in for the simpler techniques and I'm becoming a lot smoother on the more complex techniques.

As a foundation approach, I like this. I think it's better to have a solid grasp of a limited number of moves, than a broader exposure to loads.

@@RafaelFerreira-yo7jl all the gyms around me are priced the same if not a bit higher. I’ve really enjoyed it! The downside is that there isn’t rolling until you’re out of combatives. And even though I can’t roll, I’ve been taking the master cycle class (blue/purple belt class) and drill all those techniques as well. I’m actually doing my first tournament tomorrow! I’m at a disadvantage due to the nature of how Gracie teaches but that doesn’t bother me much.

@@michaelebbage9166 I’m looking forward to broadening my techniques but I do enjoy working on just the handful I know now and just putting in lots of time baking them into muscle memory.
