Valve has legitimise the pc handheld market and linux gaming will be their legacy on top of creating the steam store. And for that i will be greatful for that. The steam deck with steam inputs/proton/standby on steamOS is still why its still a powerhouse despite being beaten by new hardware.

They also put Linux gaming on the map and put in so much work for free and allowed Linux gamers to enjoy so many more games than they could just a few years ago. You could play a lot of these games already but they required a lot of fiddling and work arounds, but now you just boot it up on steam and click play and thousands of games just work

The more I play Steam Deck, the more passion I felt from Valve. Considering how Valve bet into open source project like Proton, VLKD3D... And the software keep pushing the hardware to new capability like an evolving miracle. For example, Cyberpunk 2077 ran about 33 fps for a preset for me. But now with software advance and a framegen mod installed. It boosts to more than 45 fps for me with almost no visual degrades. Owen, please also try out desktop mode sometimes. You might find it really enjoyable as well.

I really hope Valve doesn't drop the ball for gen 2.

It depends on how good you can adapt with consoles. As a KBM player myself, I just can't stand these consoles approach too much. It was hard. I tried to get used to but ended up satisfaction is what I'm looking for when playing games. Maybe I'm fine with racing or sport games but shooting games? Just 8:32 not great. I kinda like the OLED but yeah the gameplay or immersion matters too than the visual or graphics. I'm not even that old yet but I kinda agree, the more I live the more I have lesser time to game on the fixed setup. But the handhelds are not the option either as I'm not enjoying mobile games that much. So torn. If we all buying handhelds then the gaming era will be remedied again since none of us requires higher res, higher graphics, higher fps anymore isn't? These never better than a desktop PC, just more convenience. 🤷♀

The original steam deck wasn't bad, but I pre-ordered, and I'm pretty sure valve pulled a bait and switch on components. ALSO. But I digress. To get to the point, I also have a Steam Deck OLED and a PS5, both of which are convenient to pick up and play instantly. As a result, they get more use than all three of my PCs combined, which are mostly used for benchmarking. One of the best parts is that I end up streaming/remote playing many of my PS5 games to my Steam Deck using Chiaki. I experience very little to no latency, thanks to my Wi-Fi 6E and gigabit internet connection. Please keep that in mind. It's really hard to find time to game as you get older and have more responsibilities, so having quick and accessible options like the Steam Deck and PS5 is invaluable.

The base pixel color of the display is very dark, so blacks look WAY more black than let's say the original Switch. The only real bad thing I have to say about the display is the 60Hz refreshrate (because 90Hz+ is always nice to have), lack of VRR and the limited color range... The color range made the screen look quite dull in games. However, as soon as the VibrantDeck plugin came out, and later Valve's official solution. increasing vibrancy makes the display look pretty decent. Sure, compared to OLED, it's no competition, but when you come from a history of nintendo handhelds where you had massive ghosting, no backlight, and quite lately on the New 2DSXL it was a TN panel with pretty substantial ghosting... The Steam Deck does DEFINITELY not categorize as an "awful display" :) decent, and serviceable are better words for it.

I’m on the same boat. I have two kids under 4. My 4090 computer gets lets use than my oled steam deck. Also, once you go oled you can’t go back. I started with the 55” B6 back in 2016. Then I got 65” c9, 48” CX, 77” g2 and now I have the 32” alienware monitor. Oled truly ruins you.

Hmmm so pretty colours (on an OLED) is better than the game itself ….. hmmm sounds like blinking lights are your thing and not a great game with half decent graphics and vg story 🤯🤦♂🤦♀. As a financial supporter of the channel which talks about gpus and games and I love it …… I feel all it takes is blinking lights to catch this moths attention ….. Daniel I feel for me this is one of the most meh upload you’ve done for me. I’m happily gaming on my Steam Deck (IPS screen) as my 1440p IPS ultrawide or my HDR 4k FALD monitor and enjoy my games first and foremost🥰💪😉🥳

He likes AMD over Nvidia now it's official, lol ... Also my Arch Linux install now has VRR support as well as HDR, wondering why they didn't add VRR to the steamdeck, Also you can force higher FPS going into mangohud and locking the FPS to the screens refresh and switching it to Vulkan mailbox.

I'm currently buying the parts for my first gaming pc and I got a nice monitor for it. I got that QD-Oled monitor by Alienware with the panel being made by Samsung, because OLED spoiled me too lol. But yeah, I'm building around a 4080 super and i-7 13700K. I'm supper stroked to play games with all the bells and whistles, and I can say that I'm joining the PC master race but I still love console games because they were always there for me. but yeah, that's my 2 cents

I feel handhelds are going to create trouble for expensive PCs. Three are many on market now. They will become powerful in the future. U are asking the most important questions in your videos than other youtubers.

Do you know what my last upgrades were? Getting a 7800X3D with motherboard and DDR5 and what I've been playing mostly ends up being a super old text-based MUD. Perfect system for such a game.

Dont forget you can also stream games from your desktop to the steam deck as well if youre just playing at home. That lets you play at higher graphics fidelity, frame rate, and the steam deck gets crazy battery life from it just being a stream of a game. This is also a way to play those games that dont run well/ at all on the deck but can run on your computer.

No shame in using the Steam Deck, great little machine. However it's the difference between a PC gamer and a console gamer. It sounds like you have been more of a console gamer. I have always been a PC gamer, there are SO many games I've not played it would be ridiculous for me to also own a console. Handheld or otherwise. Anymore I can play games from Sony, Microsoft or PC indie developers. Again though nothing wrong with consoles, but there really no easier. My PC is upstairs in a home office I can turn it on when I want to play or leave it on so it's ready to play. I can pick up where I left off on any game I play just like a handheld. For me when I go somewhere, it's usually vacation which doesn't include gaming. When I go to work I'm WORKING, not gaming. There is no way to compare a handheld and a stacked gaming PC. They are 2 VERY different gaming mediums. I personally do not like to game on such a small screen, it's just unenjoyable for me.

When it comes to the time thing, Daniel, I totally feel you. Got a great, top-of-the-line PC with a 4090, and a couple of nice VR headsets, which is part of the reason I built the PC--but haven't turned it or the headsets on in the last month and a half, because I'm the sole caretaker of 3 close relatives, and they've all been going through it during that time. I don't have a Steam Deck, OLED or otherwise... but after this, I'm maybe going to have to give it a look. Because I don't know when my time is going to be free enough to just sit down and play for awhile, without hearing my name every five damn minutes.

It's not just about being older or having kids. I've been playing handhelds since I was a kid. Sure I had my home consoles like the NES, SNES and so on and a very good PC for the time, but there's just something addicting about handhelds. You end up playing a lot more games than you actually planned on because you think "I'll just play this a bit and then go do something else" but it ends up sucking you in and you discover some great games in the process. Most of my favourite franchises and games today are games I played on a whim on a handheld like SMT/Persona, Ace attorney, Ace combat and so on. Steam deck just helped people see how good handhelds can be when paired with a competent OS and a platform like steam integrated into it, making the experience even more seamless.

There is a bit of screen lottery with the steamdeck oled. I was a bit disappointed jumping from the lcd model to oled because my oled model has an EXTREME green tint that no settings can fix. Seems to be specifically the oled models that use samsung displays. Mine also has awful moire patterns clearly visible on most greys. That said, the 90hz refresh, hdr, and better battery life still make it a nice upgrade.
