This is the best Steam Deck OLED ad ive ever sat through ❤
@PixelShade4 ай бұрын
05:00 I honestly think it's absurd to say that the Steam Deck LCD model has an "absolutely awful display". It's a pretty decent IPS panel, with good uniformity, relatively good pixel response, it gets REALLY bright ~550nits (above the 400nits VALVE states on their site). The base pixel color of the display is very dark, so blacks look WAY more black than let's say the original Switch. The only real bad thing I have to say about the display is the 60Hz refreshrate (because 90Hz+ is always nice to have), lack of VRR and the limited color range... The color range made the screen look quite dull in games. However, as soon as the VibrantDeck plugin came out, and later Valve's official solution. increasing vibrancy makes the display look pretty decent. Sure, compared to OLED, it's no competition, but when you come from a history of nintendo handhelds where you had massive ghosting, no backlight, and quite lately on the New 2DSXL it was a TN panel with pretty substantial ghosting... The Steam Deck does DEFINITELY not categorize as an "awful display" :) decent, and serviceable are better words for it.

It's not just about being older or having kids. I've been playing handhelds since I was a kid. Sure I had my home consoles like the NES, SNES and so on and a very good PC for the time, but there's just something addicting about handhelds. You end up playing a lot more games than you actually planned on because you think "I'll just play this a bit and then go do something else" but it ends up sucking you in and you discover some great games in the process. Most of my favourite franchises and games today are games I played on a whim on a handheld like SMT/Persona, Ace attorney, Ace combat and so on. Steam deck just helped people see how good handhelds can be when paired with a competent OS and a platform like steam integrated into it, making the experience even more seamless.
@TechnoTurtle99744 ай бұрын
Dont forget you can also stream games from your desktop to the steam deck as well if youre just playing at home. That lets you play at higher graphics fidelity, frame rate, and the steam deck gets crazy battery life from it just being a stream of a game. Idk why I wasn't subscribed to you yet despite watching your videos for a while now lol, but you made some great points here. On buying games that run on steam deck: I hope more people start buying Steam Decks, because maybe it will put some pressure on devs to optimize their games for it. I think most Steam Deck users feel the same way; If it doesn't really run on the Steam Deck, we don't really want to buy it. On monitors: Yeah. I've had this 1440p 170hz monitor for like 3 years now. It was a great price, it looks decent, and it's the perfect size. But I don't think it really hit me how much the monitor matters for immersion until I started playing my Steam Deck OLED more. I have been playing like a few minutes at a time of Cyberpunk 2077 on my main monitor since it came out, and I have just never been really impressed by the visuals... until I tried it on the Steam Deck OLED. It literally does not matter that it can only do 30fps... it just looks phenomenal with that OLED screen, and I feel like I'm seeing the game for the first time. I'm telling you Cyberpunk looks better on low settings, 30fps on that Steam Deck OLED than it does at psycho/ultra/whatever on my 1440p IPS. It's crazy. And I can freaking play it in bed!

It sounds like Valve’s greatest accomplishment with the steam deck has been massively reducing the friction for starting and stopping a gaming session. It’s something I’ve never really thought about, and your personal situation really pushes that problem to the forefront. Reducing that friction has made gaming much more enjoyable and accessible for you, and it could also possibly make a difference in my experience with gaming too even though my life isn’t as time-constrained as yours. When you say gaming on a "Steam Deck", what I interpret that to mean is PC gaming without the mouse and keyboard. In this situation I can definitely agree with you. I have a home office with a gaming PC (4090 with a 7800X3D) attached to a 43 inch display, complete with VR and a haptic / motion enabled custom built racing simulator for GTR 2. (Yes I'm a Gen X-er). The racing simulator is truly the only reason I use my "gaming PC" nowadays to actually play games (a three hour race every Sunday), okay along with RTS type games and serious FPS games (Squad and Ready or Not), but those are not even thrice a month. In my living room however, I have a "HTPC" attached to a 75 inch MiniLED (a 5800X3D with a 7900XTX) and that is where I have for the past 5 years played games for what I would traditionally use my office "Gaming PC" for. So yeah, I've found myself using a PS5 Dual Sense or Xbox 360 Pad for 80% of my PC gaming sessions. I've been playing Duke Nukem 3D 20th Ann' on Steam for the past few days with the DualSense and its just bitchin. Just as kickass as I remembered from way back when. I have a Legion GO, but have never actually used it to play games in a serious sit-down session. I still treat PC gaming, watching movies and listening to music as a dedicated and separate planned events in my life. I'm one of those that still have a "Hi-Fi" system in my living room with a Dolby ATMOS / DTS system attached to the HTPC as a basis for my iMAX home theatre system. (complete with bass shakers in the sofa, etc). Yes, all of my PCs have Sound Blaster (X-Fi) cards and all have dedicated room mounted 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound systems. So yeah, I get the PC gaming without the mouse and keyboard side of things. PC gaming has definitely come quite a ways since the 90s, that's for sure, but I really do think its for the better.

I prefer MnK controls for most games I play short of sidescrollers, which is why I still spend most of my game time at the desk despite having a Legion Go. The Go gets most of its use during travel and as part of a portable setup, where I can stuff it in my carryon with the other components (like the monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.) going into checked luggage. It's more versatile than taking a gaming laptop, even if the package does take up more space as a whole. Great for knocking out more casual games.

The more I play Steam Deck, the more passion I felt from Valve. Considering how Valve bet into open source project like Proton, VLKD3D... And the software keep pushing the hardware to new capability like an evolving miracle. For example, Cyberpunk 2077 ran about 33 fps for a preset for me. But now with software advance and a framegen mod installed. It boosts to more than 45 fps for me with almost no visual degrades. Owen, please also try out desktop mode sometimes. You might find it really enjoyable as well.

Im definitely getting the next Steam Deck (2) I have a desktop with a 13900k and RTX4090, also a laptop with 13900hx and RTX 4080 with two 65" QD-OLED TVs (S90C and S95D). But a steam deck is perfect for ultra portable playing and the next will have substantially better battery life given the Intel and AMD providing battery-friendly CPUs while VASTLY improving iGPU tech in exponential fashion.

Having a lot of fun playing 2D games lately on my not-at-all gaming-spec laptop (iGPU only, 10 years old). Fun gameplay, low minimum requirement, easy and convenient to play anywhere. It's a great time. More casual like I used to feel like playing on a console. Kinda the good old days.

I have a Steam Deck, a Legion Go, and a 3080 Ti based PC. They all get play time because some games just don't do well on handhelds(though some run surprisingly well like Metro Exodus and TLOU Part 1), and demand being played on a larger or ultrawide screens. Of course, you can hook the handhelds up to an external display but the lower res will be very apparent because even though they can output resolutions up to 4k, good luck running games at higher resolutions with decent settings and fps, not to mention the ridiculous power drain higher performance profiles require.

Fantastic clickbait, worked on me, LOL. I really want an OLED, but I use the same Monitor for WFH daily, so burn-in is a real worry. I agree that I am constantly surprised by how good games look on XboX X on my TV just because the TV has much better image quality.

I work remote, barely leave the house, and don’t have kids but honestly, same. If it’s a 3rd person game I aim for 40 fps. If it’s a first person game I aim for 60. If it can hit those I play it on Steam Deck. And I do very often look for more games to play on Steam Deck rather than my PC. It’s nice being able to spend time with my wife in the living room or just lay in bed and wind down with the cat on my lap before bed.

After a long day at office what I least want to do is to sit at another desk at look into another monitor for another few hours. Having Switch/Steam Deck lets you go to bed/balcony/couch and just relax. Especially it's good to have a handheld console if you live with gf/wife + have kids and your attention is suddenly needed ASAP.
@HeadBassVTEC4 ай бұрын
yeah only one problem with all handhelds - no keyboard and mouse that really limits what I would play on it (personal preference, don't really like gamepads for most games) no issues playing indie games on my watercooled 4080, I kinda enjoy it that it runs half the clocks to max my refresh rate fps limit and runs super cool and doesn't heat my room at all

I already have a steamdeck that I use to play low graphics games before sleep. But for long session I feel more comfortable to play on my gaming PC with a rx 6700xt at 1440p Among all the games I have played this last year: SmtVV Sakuna of rice and ruin (an incredible game I probably would have never touched without my steamdeck) Ace attorney Hades Tomb raider Rise of the tomb raider Ratchet & clank Monster hunter world Triangle strategy Resident evil 2. None of them would profit from a 4090 except maybe ratchet & clank. The idea of getting an oled monitor also goes through my mind frequently but I'm not sure I would get much profit from it either
@Dont_Panic74 ай бұрын
If you haven't tried it yet I 100% reccomend that you try sunshine/moonlight. You can run your games on your high end PC at max settings, at let's say 2x the resolution of the deck (for upsampling purposes) and stream to it with virtually no latency. Even for games that the deck can handle on its own, the battery life change is huge because it's just using the hardware video decoder. Add tailscale and you can even use it away from your house without opening any ports!

For me playing on pc is way more comfortable. You can simply rest your head on your recliner sofa and keep your legs on the foot rest and enjoy. But with handheld you have to hold it in the hands being up in air and either look up or down on the screen. Its fun but not something i can do for more than half an hour.

There is a bit of screen lottery with the steamdeck oled. I was a bit disappointed jumping from the lcd model to oled because my oled model has an EXTREME green tint that no settings can fix. Seems to be specifically the oled models that use samsung displays. Mine also has awful moire patterns clearly visible on most greys. That said, the 90hz refresh, hdr, and better battery life still make it a nice upgrade.

No shame in using the Steam Deck, great little machine. However it's the difference between a PC gamer and a console gamer. It sounds like you have been more of a console gamer. I have always been a PC gamer, there are SO many games I've not played it would be ridiculous for me to also own a console. Handheld or otherwise. Anymore I can play games from Sony, Microsoft or PC indie developers. Again though nothing wrong with consoles, but there really no easier. My PC is upstairs in a home office I can turn it on when I want to play or leave it on so it's ready to play. I can pick up where I left off on any game I play just like a handheld. For me when I go somewhere, it's usually vacation which doesn't include gaming. When I go to work I'm WORKING, not gaming. There is no way to compare a handheld and a stacked gaming PC. They are 2 VERY different gaming mediums. I personally do not like to game on such a small screen, it's just unenjoyable for me.
