In this video I talk about the good and the bad of the Tag Heuer Aquaracer...and why I think many WIS should circle back for a more objective look at the controversial model.
For those interested in where I purchased the new Emerald green edition, that info is here:

The latest Aquaracers from Tag are actually among the most beautiful divers in the business right now and best overall Divers Tag has made to date. I purchased 41 m Caliber 5 automatic in Black a year ago and its something to behold. Amazing quality.

Doesn’t a plastic spacer improve the shock resistance ? At least the one in Seikos like the SKX it is a very soft plastic that can stretch and doesn’t crack, so there it is no question to me it should be better than a metal ring, how did the one in the Tag seemed ?

Thanks for that refreshing honest review of a Tag Heuer. I really resent some of the reviewers knocking down TAG but a lot of them are either just paid actors or just repeating what they heard from others.

It's a beautiful timepiece at a great price point. In using plastic, I wouldn't say was a serious flaw. It was a move against established design thought. Plastics, polymers, it has proven its place in modern applications. I happily own the Emerald Aquaracer.

Tag Aquaraceris one of the most overlooked divers in the market, those are built like tanks, reliable and great looking pieces (combination of brushed and polished steel). The spacer is a very strong polymer that helps with shock absorption in case of impact, these are built to 300M which means ISO6425, it is a heavy piece IMO, specially the one I have which is the chrono Calibre 16 Aquaracer, one thing I dislke is the 21mm lug width, it is annoying, so if you are going to mount some leather on it has to be a thick >2.5mm and 22mm; if you are putting on a NATO if not 21mm precise then go for a 20mm strap.

Very informative video. I'm the owner of two tag quartz pieces, but now I want to step up my game with a Tudor Pelagos. I have been going back and forth between getting one watch, or two nice watches that would go in my rotation, for the price of the Pelagos. After seeing this video, I'm more unsettled. Thanks.

zack oblong Plastic spacers aside and as someone who doesn’t own either and has only tried them on in an AD can you explain why it is way, way, in front? Is it the quality of the finishing that is much better? It would be useful to know from someone that knows both watches well! Thanks

zack oblong Thanks for the reply. Good to hear from someone talking from experience about the reliability. Re the accuracy : several owners of watches with the Sellita sw200 inside (which I think the Oris range uses) say their’s are very accurate. I’m wondering if Sellita regulate them more in the factory than ETA do.....

@zack oblong I have a few months old new Oris Aquis small second 500m. I just checked the time against the watch I use to set time which is a Citizen Skyhawk that gets the time from the radio tower every night. I'm at 10.5 days out from a time set and I'm at -19 sec. on the Oris. Maybe I'm just lucky but from what I understand this is very accurate for a watch in this price range.

Thanks Bruce: Been eyeing the White version of this watch at 41 mm for some time. Missed a couple opportunities to get it pre-owned but am still looking. And yes I was one of those guys that dissed on the brand. But even when I was there were some older Tag models out there that were/are kinda cool. Aquagraph mechanical chronograph with 500 meters of water resistance and the Kirium in salmon. I look at these Aqua-racers and see really nice watch. So the Omega Seamaster is about 1/2 the price of a Rolex Sub and the Aqua-racer is about 1/2 the price of the Omega. Seems like a deal to me!

Very good review. I really like collecting dive watches. Among my favorites, I have a Doxa Sub 300, a Jenny Caribbean 300, and the Oris Aquis. None of these can really be a dress watch so I bought the Tag ( not the emerald dial). Anyway, I wear it as a dress watch and I get a lot of compliments.

Great video as usual Bruce! The dial/hands/lume are definitely redeeming qualities for this watch and makes it worth a nod. As per the endless complaints about one never to be seen aspect, which is also less likely to fail at very much greater rate than the comparable metal alternative, I don’t think that warrants disqualification at this price point. Tag Heuer will stand by this product and they’ll be around for the owner to hold them to it. It’s the Oris Aquis for me, but this watch looks excellent. Enjoy!

To me, the weight of a watch has little to do with the quality by and large and lighter tends to be more comfortable IMO. I think the plastic movement holder, or strong polymer as geckdad put it, is a good way to keep the weight down thus making the watch more comfortable to wear. I have the black dial ceramic bezel version of this watch and love it!

So you can say the same with a plastic watch then the Beautiful balance and quality in the thought of my Casio square watch lol I think and most of watch collectors would agree that if your spending that much on a watch you hope your getting the best in materials and quality in to the watch my personal opinion. Great review. I started collecting 2 years ago. Mostly $500 watches. Last Feb. I bought my Oris 65 and Tag Aquaracer on the same day. I love them both visually, but the Tag just feels more "solid". The Tag winds more solidly. THE oris has a small bit of grindy feel to winding. I'm a metallurgist by trade and I firmly believe the Plastic spacer ring to be better at protecting the watch in a fall or drop. Love that Green Dial Bruce!!

I used to hate on the plastic spacer. Then I learned about plastic. The ring is polymer, not traditional "plastic", which doesn't react to temperature fluctuation, vibration or add the weight of metal. I know some people think heavy means quality but not always. Plastic also keeps cost down since it's molded instead of machined. The bushings in your car is a similar plastic. Plastics are used in the space program to elevate vibration. Kevlar, Dynema, and Spectra are all plastic. I obviously have no problem with the plastic spacer, but I hate a Cyclops. I don't want a wart on my crystal. Lol

Funny I find myself watching this again 2 years later while wearing the watch. Mine is black. I've also learned the space is Delrin. Used in both body armor and plate armor, Formula 1 Racing, Space program, and many other things. I know the "plastic" spacer isn't a negative with 5 minutes of open minded education. In fact it's a positive.

I had the ceramic version, 2017 model. Didn't want to beat up my Planet Ocean too much, so i bought it. Man, i was suprised how often i wore it and enjoyed it. Built like a tank. I was getting 1-2 sec a day accuracy from it. When i first bought it, was like 8-10 sec a day. But once it settled in, the accuracy was impressive for its pricepoint. Plastic spacers, who cares really at that price. Their Carrera line use metal spacers, as do all their higher end pieces. Paneri use plastic spacers for comparison. So does IWC in some models. Another honest in depth review from Bruce. 👍

Great review. I like the watch, but not my color. A darker green may have worked better. I have never seen anyone say that a plastic spacer doesn't do what it's supposed to do. Or can prove that it's not as good a a metal spacer for holding the movement in place. Seems to me that a plastic spacer would help with shock absorption better that a metal spacer. Anyway, it doesn't matter to me that much. The movement is a workhorse movement that any watchmaker should have parts for and should be able to repair. The case looks good, and having a stainless bezel takes it out of the homage arena. So many watches today all have Submariner type bezels that they start to all look alike. This Tag has it's own look and I like that.

I just bought an TAG Heuer Aquaracer 41mm in blue, one of the last ones in Germany because (apparently) TAG Heuer is discontinuing the 41mm series. 2:33 pretty much summed up most watch peoples' first impressions of Tag to a tee. I used to be the same, but after getting to know more of their models I realized they definitely get a worse rap than they deserve & while i'm still not a fan of the plastic movement spacers, they're doing a lot of other cool things in their other models like the Isograph with its carbon hairspring or the full ceramic cases & bracelets their doing on the Carreras - neither of which is a traditional Heuer hallmark but both of which are great strides forward. Great video & looking forward to seeing more!

The Seiko movement debacle and the overpriced quartz watches with the low spec Ronda movement etc. Don't get me wrong they are incredibly reliable but it just fueled hate for the brand and I can understand why.

Tags are great watches! i owned a aquaracer, and it blows an logines hydroconquest out of the water.. its not breitling or omega offcourse.. but for the price its a very nicely build watch!

@@ceantukes1803 ditto. I own both and the Aquaracer is leagues ahead. The Hydroconquest is quartz so to be fair I'd have to compare it with my F1 and it loses that contest to.

Wow! I've got a white dialed Aquaracer at the moment but I've been considering picking up the grey, sunburst dial Seamaster. After seeing this though, I considering swapping my white dial Aquaracer for the Emerald and then maybe I'll get the white dialed Seamaster instead 🤔... I hate choosing watches - it's too difficult lol.

Plastic spacers are pretty much the reason why TAG fell off the watch nerds' radar in the late 90s. At this price I can understand why some of us aren't quite sure what to make of plastic under the hood... nice review, however! Appreciate the wide spectrum covered on this channel, thanks very much for all your work!

Don't forget that they also make overpriced quartz watches with mediocre off the shelf ETA quartz movements! For what they charge in their quartz watches I could get a Grand Seiko 9f quartz with better overall finishing or even get a Longines VHP for half the price.

I have the 41 Aquaracer in Black and agree with you. A great every day watch for the price, I am not a watch collector and only have an Fitbit for tracking my sports and the Aquaracer. The Aquaracer is perfect on the beach, fits great to a suit or Jeans and T shirt... it is not as Famous as a Rolex or Omega and the people dont judge you must have money. And the 41 has the perfect size for my 16,5cm wrist. Looks massive but not too big. I wanted also love the oris, but the 43mm looks too big on my wrist and a little bit boring, the 39 too small. The only watch which is also interesting for me is the new Longines HC, but i dont like the polished parts on the braclet I like it more when the most parts of the watch are brushed.

Do they make it in a Day Date configuration, without plastic spacers of course. Does it have a screw in crown with Hand winding.

copied from a forum..👇🏽 Lets face it, even though a metal spacer looks cool, it is hard and (if it is aluminium) prone to bend and squash. A plastic spacer can be made to fit tighter and does absorb shock. If your watchmaker is using his/her tweezers to lever out a movement for work, they could easily bend the metal spacer/ movement holder. Plastic is also self-lubricating (and doesn't rust) so any internal friction won't damage the internal casing. The only time when I could forsee a metal movement holder being an improvement on a plastic is when it is fixed to the movement by screws (and I have seen it with rubber screws in a few rare cases). See the MK 2 promo stuff for an example. Metal does look cooler, but unless the movement holder completely covers the movement to lend the case anti-magnetic properties (which a few do, as in the above pic) plastic is actually a good if not better option, mechanically speaking. Doesn't mean it isn't dissapointing when you open the caseback and see it.

@Bruce Williams, I really want to buy this watch as my first serious watch. I'm saving now. Did a lot of research and in convinced this is a good purchase. But.. does it make sense that the Maurice Lacroix Aikon made me doubt? I find that to be so beautiful as well and they have similar aesthetic.

I read somewhere that it’s a strong polymer that actually gives a better seal, and better shock absorption than a metal spacer and makes the watch lighter to wear. As a tool watch I’d want it to be as durable and robust as possible, so I don’t have an issue with this.

Unless I could get either for no more than 1500 dollars, I’d skip both the Aquaracer and the Aquis, and go for the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf instead. The Fossil Group really stepped up the ETA game with the STP 1-11, and Zodiac’s build quality and finishing are absolutely superb.

I had the 42mm black ceramic bezel version. The fit and finish was fantastic, easily punches above its weightclass. Wore fantastic, felt great, supremely versitile. Had that Sub look but to me managed to look unique, looked less like a sub ape than say a super-ocean. My problem was the Sellita 200. Had to go back twice in one year under warranty, first time to replace the movement, second time to fix the replaced movement that just stopped running at random. The repair department was excellent, customer service excellent, but it put me off Sellitas forever. Sold it (with a year left on the warrenty, im not a monster) and got a seamaster, which i sold for a pelagos lhd.

And for everyone that praises oris while crapping on Tag, they both use off the shelf mass produced movements, amd both are all swiss made, dont believe the haters that claim the Tag gets cases and bracelets from Shenzhen or wherever, LVMH owns case and bracelet factories in Switzerland that they produce even Aquaracer cases and bracelets at. I've owned oris and had QC issues with them too. Yes they're a little cheaper but they also dont have the same name recognition, and after the usually generous AD discounts on TH the price difference is a wash. Neither one can hold their value with a bucket anyway 🤷‍♂️
