Yes, typically the winter is better than summer shelling, but I forgot what time of year it was while I was on Fort Myers Beach. I knew it was raining from the mosquitos, but there were more shells than I expected to find, especially in the summer.

Do you ever dump your Florida fighting conchs off in a pile before you leave the beach because you have so many at home already? When we went there there were two piles of them when we came down, but none on the beach anywhere. Sooooo happy someone left some for us.!

I have not dumped my Fighting Conchs in a while, so that glorious pile wasn't from me - but I'm so happy you took some! I have been known to pick through the "discard" piles on the beach. One persons beach trash is another persons beach treasure!

We just got here on Captiva and found an amazing collection of shells. I have them soaking in soapy water and they will dry over night. I was absolutely thrilled and my kiddos creativity sparked as they found so many shells. Now we’re making a big art piece for our homeschool room😂

Loved every minute! The spoonbills were a special treat. Not sure if you caught it in the playback, but the broken banded tulip at 22:22 was ALIVE! Broken aperture notwithstanding, he seemed just fine. I'm amazed at how resilient these animals can be, like when you find shells with obvious repair lines. I think the angel wings and channeled duck clams and other very delicate bivalves live buried in the mud where they are protected, but I didn't know angel wings aren't hinged! Thanks for passing along those fun critter facts!

Holy cow that 22:22 tulip! I didn't see it was alive until I watched the playback. And even then it's just that little tiny movement that gives it away. I'm amazed at how resilient they are too. It's incredible that getting stranded in the high wrack line can be their demise, but if they lose a good chunk of their shell they can repair themselves. I love the beach and everything it teaches me!!!

Thank you for taking me on your virtual beach treasure hunt with you. I’ve been hospitalized with walking pneumonia for the past week, and now I’m back home recovering but still not completely over it. I’m still a bit weak and coughing up gunk from my lungs. I tell ya, it’s not fun at all. After I’m fully recovered, I need a life saving surgery. I’m born with a defective heart valve (aortic valve stenosis) very serious so this will be my third surgery in my lifetime. I have been living with my own valve my whole life which is now retiring so I need a replacement to prolong my life. Hopefully I’ll feel like myself again and strong as a racehorse soon. I know it may sound strange but I'd love to see a video of just you using your tools (dental pick etc...) to clean some shells. When we were down a visiting Fort Myers beach a few weeks back we got chased onto the beech by the insects too! It was aweful, we got caught in the rain getting off the beach so they didn’t bother us as much then. We didn’t get to the beach at low tide that day so I wasn’t able to walk down as you walked. Loved the blue crab! They are the sassiest of the crabs I think. Very aggressive. I watch Oliver Chavis from Salty Reflections handle them very carefully!! That first lace murex was a beautiful color. Apparently the farther north, the more muted the colors on those colorful moon snails. I hardly ever find any with color but I know them by their shape.😊 That second lace was really nice! FMB really likes you Sharmon! xxoo

Yeah, that crab didn't want me handling it at all. Funny because the calico crabs are so docile. I saw a video where the person was harvesting the crown conchs to eat. The pile of shells they left behind was insane!!!

I'm actually curious as to how I'll feel in the future too! I am still in awe that these beautiful shells are just sitting on the beach for anyone to discover. And I've been out there - shoot hundreds of times now and each time is just as thrilling. I might find a "new-to-me" shell, or see a new creature or find a shell that I've only found in the pages of my shell books. I do not think I will ever tire of looking for beach treasures. At least not in the near future. I have only lived here for 5 years and I can't wait to see what the next 5 years will bring!

I agree with you that the Carditas are highly underrated! They are such pretty little shells! I have a few that are flame orange red and they are absolutely gorgeous. The reason that the bleach works on the beach glue is that chlorine is highly attracted to calcium and it forms calcium chloride ions, so the beach gunk is literally attracted to the chlorine and binds with it. At least that’s kinda the simple explanation. Of course the algae and other organic stuff is just killed off by the chlorine, but the reason that the beach glue comes off so easily is because it’s so attracted to the chlorine. My chemistry knowledge is mostly confined to ceramic glazes, lol, but every now and then it comes in handy for random information. 😂 and as one of your long time patrons, I can’t speak for everyone, but personally I don’t want you to save special things just for us. I heard another KZbinr that I watch (Wes at High Falutin’ Low Carb) refer to Patreon as “The Tip Jar for the Internet“ and that’s exactly how I see it. You bring us beach joy every week and it’s so appreciated. ❤️💯

Thank you for that feedback on what content you like to see where. I do want to give my Patreons a little sometime extra, but it does seem cruel to not share with everyone. It's something I'm still figuring out. And THANK YOU for the chemistry lesson! I know bleach is really quite slippery right out of the bottle, but I was curious what is going on with the reactions. And the way it dissolves the fighting conch periostracum is pretty spectacular.

Bleach feels slippery because it’s a chemical base (as opposed to an acid). But the reason it’s good at removing the periostracum is because it breaks down organic cells, which is why when you get it on your hands and forget to wash it off right away, it will turn your fingertips white on top of the skin. It’s dissolving the dead skin cells we all have on the very surface of our skin. The periostracum is very much a layer of (on an empty shell) dead skin cells, so it’s the same thing as when we get the white layer of skin cells that slough off. Bleach is a really interesting chemical. And I am a little bit nerdy. 😂

Other people have suggested tissues or bubble wrap. I think the sand would be too heavy, however I have heard of people filling their urchins with sand so they don't break!

Hi Sharmon, I just left there yesterday and visited many of the areas you go shelling at. May I ask you when you videoed this episode? I was there for a week and none of the beaches had calm waters. They were very ruff. Marco was the best shelling beach. But I’m blessed to have been there on all the beaches, I was able to be on because I will never be able to come back. I’m just wanting to know, since I never came across calm waters.

I filmed this on Thursday, September 5th. I typically film my walks a few weeks before they air. I would be too stressed out if I had to out and film, edit and post all in the same week, so I give myself some "buffer" time just in case. The winds and weather play a huge role in what ends up on the beach.

Are you seeing any Disc Docinas? I have not seen many on your videos and there used to be 100's of them on the beach, at least at Sanibel. I really liked the Lightening Whelk with the barnacles, made it look lacy. Great walk, how long did it take to find all your treasure, hours?

Hello again. I have a question. At 29:58 when you picked up the top snail, you said it had "maker?" "And if you soak it too long in bleach you can see the maker?" Is that the pearl like lining inside of some shells? I've learned the names of many shells from you. Love your videos! Thank you!

Nacre - another fancy word for mother-of-pearl. And yes, that nacre is made by a few critters, the top snail, the chestnut turban and the pen shell are a few that come to mind. If you were to leave the shell in acid too long, it would expose that beautiful pearl-like materials under neath. I found some fresh water mussels that the entire shell is nacre. It's so pretty!

Oh good question! Yes the crab will molt (shed its shell) when it's ready for one that's a little bigger. The crab looked like an adult, but they too will molt their shell. Just not as often as the little crabs.

I normally soak the green, grimy and encrusted shells in full strength bleach overnight.

Doves. From inside the sand dollar that broke. There are 5 "doves" inside every sand dollar, which are actually the teeth that the animal uses to grind it's food.

This was filmed at Fort Myers Beach. Just keep in mind the beach is about 7 miles long and I personally prefer the southern end of the beach for beachcombing.

It's hard because the beach surroundings are so different. I love Fort Myers Beach, especially the south end of the island and it's slowing coming back with stores and restaurants opening. SW Florida has many great beaches to choose from. Sanibel is great for shelling but so is Marco Island. I would be a terrible travel agent!

He is just schlepping along ..lol. Never been to Fort Myers Beach but the water on the West Coast of Florida is much prettier than on the East Coast of Florida. Definitely don’t find these type of creature is on Orchard Beach.

The beaches in SWFL are simply the best. I've shelled over on the East Coast and that is super fun to see different species but the sheer variety of shells that can be found here is really quite amazing.

I have not stayed at any beach front properties on Fort Myers except for the Pink Shell a few years ago. A lot has changed since Hurricane Ian.
