Just clicked so not sure if you mentioned it, but Barney Hill's granddaughter is current UFC fighter Angela Hill. She fought last night. Also video idea - Ken McElroy, the "town bully" whose bullying was so severe that he was murdered by the townspeople who then kept quiet about it for decades.

Well, the drawings done by BH led scientists to discover a previously unknown star system perfectly, so I don’t think it was a hoax. Also, at the time, it would have been bad for a interracial couple to bring such attention to themselves and their jobs.

I met a Dr Leo Sprinkle who was a psychologist that was well associated with the case. @@DrSebby I didn’t feel it necessary. The good doctor referenced them in his discussion. For instance the analysis of the curious chemicals warranted an hour long documentary. The “star map” was the most impressive example and was well beyond their capabilities or anyone else’s at that time since it referenced two stars that weren’t even charted until about 8 years after the map was produced. These people were pretty simple folk. If you read the book she couldn’t even describe how a year was determined let alone the properties of the twin stars Zeta reticula A and B. If they were hoaxers they were very impressive. BTW it wasn’t mentioned that the incident gave Barney PTSD symptoms that eventually led to his death. Thanks for your query!

It seems like you've got a predisposition to disregard these stories. The Travis Walton story you commented on was labelled an obvious hoax even though the craft was witnessed by several of his fellow forestry workers. Now this Betty & Barney Hill story gets a similar review. I find it frustrating that these compelling tales get ignored by the general public as mostly hoaxes. Not discounting hoaxes exist in the field but doubting that even the strongest stories tend to be almost ridiculed by you. I wonder what it would take to really sway you to consider a story true. What strikes me about your outlook is how I feel you lack the comprehension that these events could be happening. It's really an insult to these traumatized people that were bold enough to go public with these highly sensitive tales. Maybe investigate the topic as a whole and perhaps you would encounter a wider view of the subject and not be so quick to focus on the possible fraudulent theories. Again not to say there are not fabrications on the subject but just feel you are incapable of considering the chance that some of these stories could be true and the implications of this.

Listened to Betty speak at the Portsmouth NH library in the Mid 70's. After relating her abduction story she went on to talk about her most recent sightings (plural) and her ability to communicate with space craft. The more she talked the less plausible her stories became. The audience began to shuffle their feet and some snickered. It was very difficult to take this apparently delusional lady seriously.

@@someguy7629 I don't know whether the Hill's experienced an abduction or not. Nor was I commenting on the abduction itself. My comment was concerning a personal experience I had with Mrs Hill. Yes I found her comments odd ( among other things, she mentioned signaling space craft over Portsmouth harbor with a flashlight and they signaled back.) Make of that what you want but it certainly made her abduction story suspect in my mind. As to the Star Map, Advances in Astronomy have proved that Marjorie Fish ( whose theory validated the star Map ) was wrong. Marjorie's work was scientifically based but unfortunately the 1960's astronomical data she used was flawed.. Ms. Fish would later admit that her theory was incorrect and had no correlation to star alignment as we know it today. Nor have I found any astronomer that validates the map.

My impression is that Betty Hill went off the deep end only after her husband died. Barney died at the age of 46 in 1969. Betty died 35 years later. Consensus is, something happened, that it was not a fabricated story.

@@anonymike8280 I agree with you. Betty was a college educated social worker at the time of the 1961 incident and both she and Barney were very involved with the NAACP and racial equality. Barney received an award from Sargent Shriver for his work. They didn’t need publicity about their experience and did not seek it. They were exposed by a Boston reporter in 1964. Betty became delusional in the years after Barney’s death which caused great damage to her reputation. She was even warned to keep quiet by John Fuller the author of the book “The Interrupted Journey” detailing their abduction but unfortunately she didn’t listen to him.

@@valerieteti1755 It's a sad story. They were a credible middle class couple. Even though interracial marriages were rare in the era, in Upper New England I doubt that they experienced much racially motivated abuse. There are always idiots who shout things or even throw things at people because they're idiots with nothing useful to do. Barney Hill was a subdued guy. Yes. I do think there's very good chance that they believed the story whether or not it was actually true. And to draw attention to themselves let them open even just as an interracial couple in the news Nationwide. They put themselves at risk of public ridicule at the very least and perhaps ostracization from some people that they had known and liked. They must have had sudden personality changes in midlife to suddenly want that much attention without any obvious expectation of secondary gain. I believe that no matter what happened they believed at least most of their story. In fact some of the details that don't make sense are so obvious they have to either be red flags or the sort of thing that would make me believe. The camera strap that was torn during a run through the woods makes no sense. Those were made of woven canvas nylon or probably in those days leather but sturdy leather. I used to actually have an antique camera from those days and it had a very sturdy leather case and strap. And why the top of your shoes would be damaged instead of the shoes missing all together or I don't know the bottoms melted or something. That too is an odd detail and so the red flag is where are the shoes and what inclines me to question a lie is that it would make much more sense to say something else that sounded more believable. Likewise the pink powder could easily be from her powder compact if her purse was filled during a struggle of some kind with someone even with Barney. If she didn't think of that as an obvious trigger for someone to dismiss her story then maybe she's not that smart and that doesn't make sense. But again it is a red flag that she didn't produce the Garment in question in case there might be traces of pink powder or describing her book where that garment went if that's not in the book.

I also do know one person that is the last person I would ever suspect of being interested in UFOs or likely to concoct a story of any kind and who is not gullible to that sort of thing he just doesn't have that much imagination. He reported seeing a cigar shaped UFO that was very large. I don't remember what he said but at the time it seemed to me comparable to the stories of football length. He reported that he saw it as he was coming over and overpass over a dry River bed and that other people had stopped to watch it. He pulled over and they watched it for over an hour before he had to leave. He admitted he had never told me or anyone else in our family because he didn't think we would believe it and he didn't want the story to get out because he was certain that others for example at his workplace would simply laugh at him from then on. He said it was still hovering Motionless In The Evening Sun when he left and apparently the other people didn't tell the story either probably for the same reasons or it was only reported locally and was dismissed like all the others are as a weather balloon or a blimp. He was a retired Air Force plane mechanic so he had a very good idea what they are capable of doing and what they look like and even if he wasn't privy to the latest secret defense aircraft which is entirely possible he would still recognize a blimp versus weather balloon versus actual craft doing something unknown at the time. He was not one to embellish a story and even when he got along in years and tended to occasionally repeat an anecdote about something it was pretty much the same every time and he was not fanciful or gullible or suggestible even as much as the average person would be. He was actually considered to be possibly mild autism spectrum for that reason. And when he told me the story there was no high emotion or colorful details or embellishment and he certainly didn't sound as though he wanted people to be excited about what he said. He said it in a brief matter of fact way and said that due to this experience he knew that UFOs were absolutely real and he didn't know what to make of them but was surprised that even after all this time nothing had ever been clarified or explained about them. The fact that this person, my stepfather, told me this story about 5 years before he died and 30 years after the fact is reason enough to believe that there is something. Yes it could be a secret government defense craft from any of the advanced technology organizations around the world but doesn't sound as though it would be within their capabilities now let alone 45 years ago.

Their interracial situation drove the UFO story. It is possible mental disorders and a agenda melded together: Understated was how their political and social interests and agenda tied into the alien abduction story. They they were able to tie their interests in with a subject matter in which others had an interest, so that it was possible to promote their view. The Hills were involved in the civil rights movement and Barney had been appointed to some state civil rights position in New Hampshire. Having an external threat bringing mankind together has always been a theme for science fiction writers. This concept was distilled down by President Reagan in his 6 September 1987 speech in front of the U.N.: “I occasionally think how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world. And yet, I ask you, is not an alien force already among us? What could be more alien to the universal aspirations of our peoples than war and the threat of war?” Grey aliens - mix White and Black and what color does one get - an integrated, multi-racial creature. If they would have cooked up this story in modern times, they would have realized space traveling beings would’t be using books, but store and view data like done in modern times.

Betty was an avowed UFO enthusiast before the incident. She literally wished that she would be abducted. It's not unreasonable to think she would interpret something benign as an alien encounter. I think Barney dozed off and had a dream and she jumped at the chance to turn it into a UFO story, although knowing that he died young of a cerebral hemorrhage does make me wonder if he had some kind of neurological issue that caused hallucinations. I do think they truly believed their own story.

There's a movie called "Dark Skies" that is about aliens and it's so freaking scary bc the way the aliens infiltrated this family was so secretive and slow until the couple weeks before they were ready to abduct the youngest son. Their tactics were beyond anything we're capable of but yet it still felt realistic. Anyways Barney and Betty's story is obviously limited by their own personal knowledge of science and the available technology back then. It's actually pretty absurd when you picture aliens capable of intergalactic travel arguing amongst themselves about whether or not an abducted housewife can keep a copy of one of your books as a souvenir when you let her go home...

The instrument they use to the naval is about harvesting eggs from women and it's common in abduction stories. The truth is there is an alien agenda- they are interested in sex and reproduction, taking samples of eggs and sperm. They are making hybrids to fit into human society for some reason that is beyond us. This has been going on for a loooong timee. I have more or less regular sleep paralysis parasomnia episodes, sometimes with hallusinations (I kinda think of them as vivid dreams). The aliens are yet to manifest themselves, sadly. My most annoying this far was feeling how my flat was on fire around me and the firemen rushing in and pulling me out (while I was naked - and I never sleep naked because my flat is coffin cold, btw, but there you go). The only cool one was feeling myself turn into a werewolf (I'm a horror fan) but even that wasn't that cool because I was still thinking how I'd handle going to work the next morning if I was hairy all over and had the urge to eat everyone's liver. I'm too rational even in my dreams to be fooled too long and I know about my condition, the first time I had it I recognised it immediately. Education really helps. If I had had no idea what it's about, I understand very well how even I might be tempted to look for alternate explanations. And, parasomnias such as sleep paralysis episodes tend to happen more often when dozing off during the day or when having had too little sleep for any reason, even if you then sleep in the "regular" time. It's very much possible to have an episode while driving, for example. That would be really, really scary for the place alone.

It surprised me when you said planted hypnotic memories... I'm in hypno and a hypnotherapist can not plant a false memory, nor would they. What they will do is reframe a memory, usually traumatic to encourage healing. I do reframing work all the time. While my memory is changed in a way, I know the real story and always will! A hypnotherapist is not a magical thing, they are a mental health tool that is way under valued and completely misunderstood.

For Barney and Betty fans: The Hill case took place in 1961, less than a year after The Flinstones debut, and they were of course also married before that animated show. Meanwhile, Roswell had happened only 14 years before the Hill case, so the US gov UFO coverup was in its fullest effect. And although this was such an early case, the Hills provided researchers with literally hundreds of detail tropes that would become quite common in most other UFO cases for many decades to come.

Doc, always love your videos. There is a video out there about this same case and apparently Betty was able to ask the alien abductor where he was from. So he drew or put up a map of his star system so she could see it. When she was asked to duplicate the picture she was told by experts that the star system was Zeta reticula, but he corrected her because she drew two extra small stars at the bottom of her drawing. Years later I guess when telescopes improved, it turns out Betty was right. There is in a video out there about this. How could she know that?

Also, if you use recent astronomical data that's much more accurate than the data Marjorie used back in the 60s, it excludes 6 of the 15 "matching" stars. Idky so many ppl still use her map as proof when it's been thoroughly debunked.

Well, no matter what Grande says, it definitely DID happen and a ton of other UFO sightings and encounters were happening around the same time and were seen by very educated and well-trained people like a B-17 crew in 1968 who CLEARLY saw a UFO on radar as well as visually -- they stared right at it! That was the case where the UFO was hanging around the nuclear missile sites which happened on numerous occasions btw (do a KZbin search for: 1968-10-24: Minot AFB UFO Encounter). As for the Hill case, there's a video on KZbin of 4 police men talking about a UFO they all saw in Sharon, Massachusetts in 1966 and the police chief, Bernard Coffey, is one of the men interviewed and he said after they saw it, he was working the night shift and read a story about the Barney and Betty Hill case and was shocked because what they saw was exactly what the Hills had described. The good doctor acknowledges that he is speculating and I appreciate his honesty. Anyone that has not had a personal encounter with a UFO or an unidentifiable life form that doesn’t appear to be human, should be skeptical. Any encounter with a UFO and or life form that doesn’t appear to be human must be backed up with some form of evidence to be taken seriously. On the evidence side. Sightings of these UFO’s go back not just hundreds of years but thousands of years. Modern technology no longer requires eyewitness testimony, because most people have cell phones and cameras. A large volume of pictures and video recordings exist as proof these objects exist. There is also a lengthy list of creditable eyewitness testimonies from military and civilian pilots, passengers on planes, police officers, etc. Additionally, and probably the strongest evidence so far is the fact the U.S. government has acknowledged their existence and admitted that they don’t know what they are, where they come from, or how they are powered. Any reasonable person can examine the evidence that exists and these UFO’s exist and some kind of technology or nonhuman life form is controlling them. I believe the shear volume of creditable evidence conclusively confirms their existence. Anyone that has not had a personal encounter with one of these objects or hasn’t examined the evidence has a right to be skeptical. My wife and I encountered a large circular object, with lights that appeared to be rotating around the object, around midnight on a rural road in NW Indiana in 1968. No big story, it was hovering at tree top level when we saw it. It hovered for a few seconds and then accelerated straight up and out of sight. The entire encounter lasted maybe 15-30 seconds. I’ve been hooked on studying and researching UFO sightings and abductions since then. Like I noted previously, the evidence is so strong for their existence that even the government acknowledges they are real. I choose to believe the couple in this video were telling the truth. Since then there have been a number of reported abductions. Some reports are more creditable than others, but I believe most of these incidents are legitimate.

@@MurderWeSolved She may not have been describing a real star, Wikipedia on the topic of Hill's star map: "In 1968 Marjorie Fish of Oak Harbor, Ohio, read Fuller's book, Interrupted Journey. Fish was an elementary school teacher and amateur astronomer. Intrigued by the "star map," Fish wondered if it might be "deciphered" to determine which star system the UFO came from. Assuming that one of the fifteen stars on the map must represent Earth's Sun, Fish constructed a three-dimensional model of nearby Sun-like stars (i.e., stars deemed to have characteristics that could support life such as that found on Earth) using thread and beads, basing stellar distances on those published in the 1969 Gliese Star Catalogue. Studying thousands of vantage points over several years, the only one that seemed to match the Hill map was from the viewpoint of the double star system of Zeta Reticuli (about 39 light-years from Earth).[citation needed] Fish sent her analysis to Webb. Agreeing with her conclusions, Webb sent the map to Terence Dickinson, editor of the magazine Astronomy. Dickinson did not endorse Fish and Webb's conclusions, but for the first time in the journal's history, Astronomy invited comments and debate on a UFO report, starting with an opening article in the December 1974 issue. [35] For about a year afterward, the opinions page of Astronomy carried arguments for and against Fish's star map. Notable was an argument made by Carl Sagan and Steven Soter,[36] arguing that the "star map" was little more than a random alignment of chance points. In an episode of Cosmos in 1980, Sagan demonstrated that without the lines drawn in the maps, the Hill map bore no resemblance to the real-life map. In contrast, those more favorable to the map, such as David Saunders, a statistician who had been on the Condon UFO study, disagreed. Saunders claimed that a match among sixteen stars of the specific spectral type among the thousand stars nearest the Sun is “at least 1,000 to 1 against."[37][38] In the early 1990s the European Hipparcos ("high precision parallax collecting satellite") mission, which measured the distances to more than a hundred thousand stars around the Sun more accurately than ever before, showed that some of the stars in Fish's interpretation of the map were in fact much farther away than previously thought. Other research revealed that some stars counted by Fish as likely to host life would have had to be excluded by her own criteria, while some other stars which had been discounted by Fish have been recognised as potential abodes for life. Results such as these led Fish herself to reject her hypothesis in a public statement."

At the same time, I believe something happened to this couple, and I don't completely discount the alien abduction possibility.

Doubting them doesn’t make them liars either.

All I can say is Marjorie Fish’s corroboration of Betty Hill’s drawing of the star map. Quite compelling. That’s one facet of MANY that will serve to hold this up as an exemplary example of off-worlder interaction with our world and humanity.

It might be "compelling" if you use the same outdated astronomical data Marjorie Fish used in the 60s, but if you use current, much more accurate data you'll see it bears no real resemblance as 6 of the stars must be excluded. Then there's the issue of Betty admitting she didn't know if the 8 background stars she added were even in the right position. It's absolutely astonishing that ppl still misrepresent this long debunked map as "compelling evidence" when it quite literally proves nothing.

I feel a little sorry for Betty. If this was her defining moment, the one thing that happened or she thought happened, it must have been upsetting for her to be booed and jeered at by a bunch of fringe dwellers like UFOologists. Poor thing.

This was one of the best and creepiest movies I've ever seen. And it was made for TV! I have no reason to disbelieve their story. Bring on the proof they were lying, then I will believe it. They're telling of their encounter, with no history of either telling lies or making up stories in their past, tells me there is no reasonable doubt to attatch to there story of their abduction.

There's too much out there to discount that there is something going on. My uncle, who use to be strictly religious, turned to believing and went far with it. He does this flashing thing with a laser light and a torn light beam reciprocated, many times, many places but over a cemetery near us I seen it with my own eyes. After a few flashes by my uncle, a very large bright light appeared, grew bigger and then smaller again til it was gone. It's funny how even seeing that I try to rationalize it in my head as something else. There's too much that has been seen by so many for so long that it's actually starting to flip the other way. I think alot of people believe there's something out there but it's so unknown as to what it is that people try to not think about it.
