Have seen a lot of Betty Broderick’s in my profession. (Lab technologist at a local hospital). I can count past my ten fingers and ten toes that it has happened to acquaintances and friends. They are all in love when they are putting their husbands or wives through med school. But it seems like when the Docs go into private practice they look for something new. And does it always seem to be the secretary? I know after my ex husband bashed my face in and I got out of the hospital, I made up my mind that I was never going to be dependent on another man for my existence. I am 72 and retired. This happened to me when I was 25.

So many people weren't part of Betty's generation. Women commonly put men through law and med school. Maybe dropped out of college to do it. I knew girls who wrote and typed boyfriends papers as undergrads! And too often at middle age, they were traded in. Hope this isn't still a norm for young women.

I'll be honest - thank GOD I had watched the Betty Broderick Story several times before my ex-husband did the exact same thing to me. Unless you have given up your youth, been gaslighted for years, been replaced, been humiliated in your social circle, had your wealthy ripped away, had your retirement stolen (to buy his girlfriend a pet store because she always wanted one), and been controlled by your ex-husband financially control you post-divorce (e.g. refusing to pay alimony or arrears, constant threats of withholding support or taking you back to court, taking another job without informing you, gone hungry, had to sell your clothes and jewelry to buy gasoline/food, had your car repossessed because he won't pay the note, have your houses foreclosed because he needs his money for his new house, seen your kids not attend college because he needs his money to send her kids to college) - there is no way you can find fault in Betty. I was on the brink of insanity a million times for 8 years and Betty's story kept me from snapping too.

My father taught us when young to never depend on a man for money, to be independent, go to school. He would repeat it over and over again, you need to be financially independent. Especially in the case any of his daughters ended up with an abusive man, ended up a widow, etc. I think he saw his sisters go through a lot and wanted to prepare us for reality.

My father said similar to me. He was far from perfect, but when he was dying he told me to never stay with a man that hits me. Because a man who hits you doesn’t love you. He also told me not to get married and to get educated instead. To be independent. Better advice than what my mother gave me.

Every parent should be like your father. Girls are taught to catch a man, have children and live happily after. They are putting their own life in another person's hand. Yes, some women are very lucky to have a responsible husband but most are not so fortunate because people can and do change. Even if one is lucky enough to marry a forever faithful husband, one or more of the following events can still happen : he loses his job, he gets sick or disabled, he dies, he goes to jail etc etc. So, girls, get educated, get a good job, never totally stop working because you never know what lies ahead.

One of the aggravating factors that enraged Betty the most was that she worked her tail off during the first 8 to 10 years of the marriage. She was their sole support the entire time Dan was in med and law school. She often held down multiple jobs, all while having and rearing their family, doing all the housework and all the cooking. Betty felt she was entitled to the good life Dan's success had bought because in her eyes (and the eyes of millions of other women looking on) she had worked every bit as hard for Dan's success as he had. To have her reward ripped out from under her and handed to a younger, prettier version of herself (in her eyes) was just too much to take.

Tonya Jones, yes he took the kids because SHE took one by one at his doorstep leaving them there, in order to punish him... For the life of me I can not understand HER TWISTED thinking !!! Dan jr. was only 10 !!! Leaving him at his fathers home on his own ??? To me, Betty was all about Betty !!! And the fact that she came second best in her ex’s eyes .... I have been following this story, since it happened, back in the 80’s.... She stole his home key from her daughter to invade his home WHILE they’re sleeping !!!! She walked in WITH A GUN !!! Who does that !!! Only a desperate, NO LIFE human being that was because she loosing all the benefits and the status that came with the “ package “ she called marriage and family .... I really believe that, because she over stepped “ family value “ and civil human interaction in order to take revenge on him because he wasn’t willing to put up with her neuroticism ....and of course his infidelity!!! It is clear, what made this man to look for “ greener pastures “ ... And finally, she took his and her life without taking in consideration HER and HIS children and the impact her actions would have in their lives!!! Im sorry .... for the life of me I still cannot understand or accept her thinking and behaviour... Thirty years on, she has not changed one little bit .... At one of Oprah’s interviews, with her, she was asked if she was sorry, if she had any remorse of everything that happened .... Her answer was very quick : “ of course I’m sorry !!!! But .....he did this and did that ... blurting out all we have heard a million times till now, attempting to justify her wrongful actions for taking two lives and same time punishing her kids too ...even though she’ll never admit it .... She’s a narcissistic woman with no morals and values and most of all deprived of any human emotion ...she’s destroyed her family and killed two people and still tries to justify her actions, every chance she gets.... I feel great compassion for these four kids that were caught between her fury and hate for their father ... No wonder they’ve testified against her !!! That says everything !!! I have absolutely NO sympathy for her, and she IS where she needs to be..... I hope the rest of her life ....

She made the choice to have children with a student. That was her decision. She did not put him through school - he did the work and he paid the school loans. She was not a nice wife to him and her nasty, abusive personality really came to life when she was abusing his new wife. Why do women her age think that marriage is some sort of slave relationship that one cant get out of? It's a crazy barbaric mentality and one that no doubt ends in violent murder.

I can relate to Betty in some ways. My husband had an affair, gaslighted me to death, and then divorced me right after his mother died to be with the much younger other woman. His mother was a devout Christian who had been left for the other woman, as well. She would have disowned him financially if she had known about the affair. She didn't know about the affair: I thought at the time of the divorce he was having an affair, but when I confronted him about it he would call me crazy, evil, etc. I finally learned there had been an affair, and the reason he wanted a divorce was to be with the other woman. The timing of the divorce was so that he could keep his inheritance. Again, his mother would have been extremely upset with her son if she had known the truth. My ex-husband inherited millions of dollars; inheritance is not joint property, so he got to keep it. I was extremely angry; felt used. After our divorce, I know he took the other woman on lavish trips, bought her cars, etc, and I lived paycheck to paycheck. I work in education, so I was not living the high life. But unlike Betty, I had to accept what happened and move on. It was not easy and cried myself to sleep many nights. My ex is a covert narcissist, so learning about the disorder has helped me gain some clarity. The worst part about all this was not the affair, but the parental alienation that followed the divorce. He has tried to drive a wedge between me and my daughter. Parental alienation makes adultery look like child's play. My daughter is a young adult now and our relationship is still not the best, but, again, there is not much I can do, but try to be the bigger person.

I think it is easy when kids are young for the narcissist to manipulate using material goods and cut off opportunities. Hopefully as your daughter gets older she will reflect on things and see them differently but it might be hard if she is being showered with attention by the Narc. I think it is helpful that there are so many resources now for those living with Narc abuse, back then it wasn't really a thing. People would have just seen those behavior as ambitious.

In the book Hell Hath No Fury, here is a quote on what the Broderick brothers thought of women. “When I was brought into the Broderick family,” Betty testified, “Larry Broderick said to me, ‘Now you’re a yuck!’ And I said, ‘What’s a yuck?’ He said, ‘It’s too low to kick and too wet to step on.’ That’s what they called their sisters, the yucks.” When raised in a Catholic house & Catholic school, girls tend to be submissive to begin with.

Zenodotus Of Athens No, he used her, told her her sacrifices and effort as a mother and wife were worthless. Cheated on her and lied about it for 2 years, making her question her own sanity. Ensured his finances were in order so she would accumulate HIS debt and finally, stole her children. His divorce was premeditated too, he organised it so Betty would be left suffering. I don’t blame her, I really don’t. I also disagree with this analysis, I don’t think she wanted Dan to herself, I believe she needed the appreciation and respect she deserved and that she was raised to be a wife and mother, when her marriage ended it was a sign of her failures. She lost it because she did everything right and assumed that was enough. Such a common story among women.

Way before Linda, friends of the Brodericks became increasingly embarrassed at Betty's public insults and profanities aimed at Dan. Later the 2 older daughters witnessed the same. words are powerful and Betty had a black belt in cursing, so if you're gonna dish the crap out you better be ready to take it which obviously was Betty's downfall, reacting like a psychotic toddler when the shit got dished back. maybe you should read Bella Stumbo's "Until the Twelfth of Never" an unbiased well researched account of this trainwreck of a marriage with Dan, Linda AND Betty all coming off as 3 highly flawed individuals. after reading the book the only people I felt bad for were her kids and their medical bills from what I'm guessing is a lifetime of therapy thanks to the over-the-top horror show Betty put on for them.

I 100% recognize the anguish within her. Every time she talks about it, especially for a while a few years afterwards, her voice would go back to that same place of hurt. She was broken and did not receive the help and support she needed after being “thrown away” by her husband for a newer model. More than 16 years of marriage, five pregnancies, and practically raising four children on your own as you put your husband through school is a lot for one person to shoulder. She could have not murdered two people no matter how badly behaved they were. But still, she takes no responsibility for any of her choices all these years later. She remains a victim firmly stuck in victim hood. I made a choice to look at MY part in how my life turned out since that’s all I really control and in doing that I freed myself from wallowing in what he did, how horrible he was, what my life should have been. I created the drama every bit as much as he did and knowing that I’m glad to be free. So many years later, children grown, the delight of grandchildren, life is good and sweet. Hi Dr Grande. This case seems hard to be able to pinpoint who's right and who's wrong. I grew up with a severely narcissistic mother. And I know the feelings of rage and absolute pain that one goes through when they're being gaslighted all the time. I feel for Betty. When she got married her husband took control of everything. She became more of an object for him and her anger and pain just grew and grew. Because I grew up the way I did I can understand Betty's position and why she killed both her ex husband and his new wife. But on the other hand it's never right to kill anybody and she needed help desperately. I agree with you totally in the fact of why did he not carry a firearm in the house or have a guard dog in the house or as you said no alarm system in the house. To me this goes to show that he feels he's untouchable. He's to Grand of a person to be killed. This is such a sad case to me but murder is not okay. Thank you for this analysis and breaking it down so well. Have a great weekend. By the way thank you for all the great content you've been putting out I know it takes time and energy to do so.

I'm so excited to see you cover this case! Both the victim and the perpetrator could be case studies in mental health and super poor coping mechanisms. Correct me if I'm.wrong, but I thought Betty didn't stay home with the children while he went to school, she actually worked and supported them while he went to school, which was a large part of her argument that he "owed" her.

Yes she worked and minded the children so he could go to school and study. Dan and Linda didn’t help themselves by being purposely cruel to Betty. I remember that Linda (possibly with the help of some mean girl friends who may have even been Betty’s ex friends) sent Betty newspaper clippings from the society page of the newspaper and a few taunting letters full of vitriol. Linda took everything she had-including her social circle. If Dan had waited to be with Linda until he and Betty had divorced, and had been fair and kind, I think that he and Linda would probably still be alive.

This was really very interesting. I’ve followed this case since the beginning, finding it fascinating. This is the first time I’ve seen the psychological theories presented like this. Cheryl, your comments ring so true and go to the core of this case. Raising 5 children and having one child die while Dan went through 2 graduate level educational programs put a great deal of pressure on Betty. Our culture is not set up to protect the livelihood and future survival the Betty Brodericks of this world. She'd likely have had to wait until he retired to even get social security based on what he paid into the system. A rejected wife can be left destitute especially when Dan was determined to control everything. His taking the children seems to have been a factor in pushing her over the edge emotionally. She'd devoted her life to them. He projected in calling her narcissistic & couldn't acknowledge the traits in himself. Such a tragic real life story.

Look at Dan! He was the extreme narcassist. He even thought it was okay when his mistressed join in in taunting his already distraught wife then continued when Betty became the ex wife. Lying to her time after time about the affair. Calling her awful names when he was about to kick her to the curb like yesterdays trash. She was wonderful when she was putting her life on hold so that she could support his schooling. As a true narcassist he probably did persue her. She had all the qualities he was looking for. Beautiful, a sweet person that would do anything for any body but expecially she would do them for him. It sounds like she had no family support. A perfect person for a nacassist to be able to isolate and control. She was the one that had to raise the kids, take them to all their functions, she felt the need to be perfect. He was not there to support her but to continue to ask for more children when he knew she had a lot of issues with pregancy and was home alone when she was in the process of losing her child. Look how many miscarriages she had. Her hormones were all over the place. Then comes the slap in the face of having this other woman show up and she has no power to stop it. What kind of a woman knows a man is married and has children but continues to persue him anyway. Then starts rubbing it in her face. Always referring to her as Betts as he stabs her in the back. Taking control over the money and the children. Okay for him to buy a sports car but not okay for her to buy a fur coat. Such a double standard her. The BS of him taking money off for any infrigement. Did he really listen to every conversation to be able to know how much to deduct. Anyone who does that is crazy in my opinion. How many times did he laugh a crazy laugh while reading or listening to all that. He did have the upper hand legally and he knew he was screwing her over in court. I have heard many a woman abused by their cop husband and have no were to turn as well because of the protection these men have from the brotherhood. I think he was sure he could drive her to kill herself and that is what he continued to do. He was just as manipulative with the kids as she was. Disobeying visitiation orders when it was convient for him. I think he thought he could drive her mad and he would win the battle of proving her unfit and crazy. It is most narcassit highest priorty to drive their partners crazy. Dan never believed her to be a danger to him because he always felt in control of her and the game he was playing with her and that is why the fool never had a security system put in our had his own weapon. He thought he was just so good at this game he was playing that he was just waiting for the call saying she had taken her life. When someone is doing mind games and gas lighting a person for years and is so calloused as to not think that she deserved more for all the sacfiices she made to help him get the prominense but only wanted to give her a fraction of the money he was earning. If he was making 137,000 a month, why are you not asking why he could not have paid fair and gave her closer to the half she was intitled too instead of the little fraction he was wanting to give her. He is just as much to blame for his own death and that of his new wife. There are laws now that make people have to split everything 50/50. Betty was intitled to so much more than what was being offered. She does not deserve to continue to stay in jail when Dan or his wife showed her no remorse it what he was doing to her. I was in a 32 year relationship with a man not of his prominense but still sacfices were made and after I had raised our children and worked full time I was kicked to the curb. Years of gas lighting. I was going through a hellish menopause. I had been helping care for my mother who had dementia for the last 18 years and he was jelous of the time I was taking to care for her. He decided to act his worst. Telling me I was worthless and no one would ever want me, I go no support from my family because he painted sucha wonderful picture of himself to the outside world. This was to be our time. All the sacfices made in caring for children and getting them through school. He decided he was the only one who had sacfirced it all and wanted to pull money out of retirement to buy himself a new truck and trailer and told me there was nothing I would be able to do about it. I became suicidal and crashed. My mental health spent. I had to live in our guest bedroom for a year while everything played out in the court and I got half of the money. He got a new girlfriend right away and was trying to shove her down the kids throats. They were so upset. He was trying to control access to the last items I needed to get from the house and in has rage slammed me to the ground and then called the police and asked to have me removed as he kept our house. I asked the police to give me the last items and I would leave and he would never hear from me again. I decided to move to another state because me anger to what he chose to destroy was so great I didn't trust myself to harm him. Just for him to feel what it would be like if I were the one in control. I thankfully found so much support for having survieved domestic abuse with counselors and domestic abuse groups. It has taken years to move on but that is finally happening. It has been so hard to let go of the easy street that was about to happen All the work and sacifices I made were going to be paying off. We had plans to retire early. He is still getting to do that. He didn't want to pay spousal support so he went and askef or and got a 12% raise after our divorce was final. I too had just helped get him through school and his income was going to go up substatnally. I on the other hand lost pay. I went from make $25 per hour to $20 in the other state I moved to . Then to $18 when I moved yet again because the wearther in the state I moved to was so bad. I also will get way less in Social Security because even though we both agreed I would be a stay at home mom it shows up on my work history of having not worked for those years. It has been so hard to let go of the unfairness of it all. If I go down that rabbit hole it brings on depression so I have learned to let it go as best I can. What saddens me is my daughter is going to be getting married and I will have to go be around him again. I at least know how to set boundaries. It still will be a very hard day. I really believed we would be the couple that would make it. That we would be together for all of these great milestones. It is a process. Learning to pick up the pieces and to let go of what could have been to accept what is and to build a new life that is mine. I also had my best friend and my sister turn on me. My sister moved in with him after I left. It was romanitic I don't thing but while I was stuggling to pay my $1400 a month rent she was living in my house for $400 a month. My fiend was watching from across the street and texting him the things I was bringing out of the house. I read this story and if I would have had the unfairness that was Betty's cards I may have snapped too. The human mind can only take so much! But make no mistake Dan and Linda were not innocent. Unfortunately, what he did to her is not seen as criminal when it surely was. If they lived now Betty would have gotten half of everything. I think she has paid enough for her crime.

If Betty would've killed Dan out in public, say in a parking garbage and not touched his new wife, I believe she would be out by now. After all it is California where she committed the crimes. The major strikes against her is she never showed any remorse for what she did, broke into his house, and murdered both of them while asleep in bed. As tough as it was for her, the law looks at is as two counts of murder. Sorry to read you went through so much hardship.

I just wanted to let you know that when your ex files for Social Security you can then file under his SS since you were married to him more than 25 years. So you won’t lose those years that you weren’t working and you’re entitled to SS benefits based on his higher pay grade. You don’t have to contact him or even let him know that you’re doing it either. This is completely legal and all you have to do is contact the SS office and they will tell you that you can absolutely do that. Your story broke my heart so I wanted to make sure you knew that you can absolutely do that when you file for those benefits. I think the only issue is that he has to file for his SS first but the SS office can provide you with that information without having to contact him.😉👍🏻 Praying you’re doing better and that you now have some peace in your life.🙏🏻😊

OF COURSE Dan AND Linda were goading her, and rubbing it in her face! Even after she shot him he said, "You got me! I'm dead." It was a contest to the death for the both of them. But their murder was clearly pre-meditated, because when Linda yelled, "Call the police!" Betty shot both of them, Dan reached for the phone, she BANGED the butt of the gun against his hand and YANKED the phone out of the wall, dropping it in the hallway. She knew WTF she was doing. she was an expert marksman, and took a refresher course shortly before the murders. She made her choice. I don't knock her for it, but she definitely should spend the rest of her life in prison as a result.

She should have hired a Private Detective the minute she suspected an affair. Then showed up at the office with pictures of Horn Dog and Whore bag slinking in and out of cheap local motels, and throw the pictures all over the building. Then she should have tore into Linda, calling her every name in the book. Tore into Dan, calling him every name in the book and walked out. Linda would have slunk out of there in shame with all the office girls cheering and clapping, never to be seen again. Anyway, that's what a woman did at my business, and the guy got a shock back to the real world.

I agree. Dan wanted to change his entire life AND the image of himself that was being seen by his friends, employees, and fellow lawyers in his growing world as this very successful lawyer. He couldn't acheive that with Betty, the woman who knew exactly how much he needed and relied on her to get him through the early years of his career. She birthed their kids, worked throughout those pregnancies, kept food on their plates, clothes on their backs, a roof over their heads, provided him sex on demand without hesitations and then was systematically was shown AND told that he didn't need OR want her anymore. That he never, ever valued Betty at all. That he never appreciated Betty. That he never, ever loved her. Of course she snapped and became even more fixated on Dan, because she had made him her entire focus throughout their marriage. Placed him above their kids and even herself. She had no sense of self anymor and that was always how Dan treated her AND expected her to simply stay in that last house that he tricked Betty into thinking that it was for them, accept the terms of the divorce, while he moved on with his newly remade life, with Linda. He underestimated how much crap that he expected Betty would take from him.

Chilling last words from someone who just watched his wife murdered at the hands of his ex His last words seem to radiate contempt or boredom for absolutely anything the mother could do. He must of used that dismissiveness to really control and drive her insane. He enjoyed feeling above her and seeing her be ugly in hate. He must have a been a real heartless, self-centered, hateful and sadistic manchild. Seems to me like an accurate analysis. Makes me think a lot Thank you again

And Betty murdering both him and his new wife and ruining her children's lives is far more "wrong". She is a master manipulator and I am shocked after all these years and two trials which clearly expose her Narcissistic Personality Disorder, that people still boil it down to somehow she was so aggrieved that it made her drop her children off at his house, one by one so she could scream and cry about custody. I hope every miserable minute of her miserable life in prison is as horrible as I imagine it to be for her. I am shocked that people don't actually watch the trials. I am sickened by her fake crying and her ridiculously stupid recorded messages...she KNEW she was being recorded and she didn't care...she could not control herself and continued that disgusting talk to her little boys, then she fake cried that he called her fat...she was getting $16000 a month, which would be like $50000 in today's money. No rules or laws were ever going to stop this awful woman. The only thing that has stopped her is Life in Prison and she will never get paroled, she continues to be a danger if anyone pissed her off. Even her own children, well half believe she should not be paroled. To go to a person's house, with a gun and claim it was to make them listen, then ambush them as they lay sleeping in their own bedroom is inexcusable and deeply wicked and criminal.

I had a same experience just like Betty. I was 24years old when I got married a man who had nothing. I did stand by him and his carrier more then 10years and raised children by myself. He didn’t change a one diaper nor gave a bath for children. When he starts making 6 figure income, he had a fair with his female co-worker and cheating on me for 2years. I walked away from him b/c he doesn’t deserve me. Children and i were suffering for a long time. I don’t believe in marriage anymore.

Her husband was cruel. I remember the interview her former sister in law gave she hated Betty long before her brother ever dumped Betty. I thought does she speak like this in front of the children. Why would you expect her to give a glowing recommendation of someone who has killed family members and ruined the lives of the children?

He was a spoiled ingrate who took away Betty’s quality of life she was accustomed to over time. Betty is much prettier than the second wife. Linda was nasty to mess with a married man and steal him. She wouldn’t have anything to do with him without Dan’s success that Betty enabled. Betty felt helpless and wanted to kill him and didn’t see justice so she did it herself. He shouldn’t have flaunted that young woman in front of her. He was only successful because of Betty and he took her charity. There’s a price to pay for that. It was a crime of passion. Betty should have lost weight; that would have given her a lot more power with him and everyone else. Moral of the story...it pays to be nice. Dan and Linda were far from it and they were nervy.

That is not what we hear from the children. This relative is lying. Surprised ? Betty may be bi-polar but she is still a murderess who destroyed her children's youth. She would never qualify to be described as a good mother ! No good mother acts the way she did before killing two people in their bed. She was an unbearable mother. Her poor little son crying asking her not to call his dad bad words....I remember hearing that poor kid, on the news, begging Betty to leave them alone. She made her kids lives, a Hell !

You make a very interesting point about the prosecution’s characterization of Betty’s displaying narcissistic personality disorder traits versus borderline, which would have been more appropriate but also more sympathetic. Despite her indisputable crimes, I always felt sorry for Betty, because I believe she was victimized by Dan, who was a very controlling figure, and then later by Linda, whom Dan weaponized to augment his own cruelty. Absent any underlying psychological disorders, I believe Betty’s escalating assaults on Dan’s property and sense of security mirrored Betty’s perception of what was being unjustly imposed on her. In this context, it makes a horrible type of sense that Betty would take Dan’s and Linda’s lives, since they had both robbed Betty of her own.

I lived in San Diego during this separation, divorce and remarriage. I know this is just a summary. Let me tell you Dan and Linda mentally tortured Betty. I strongly believe she reacted this way because of the invested time in her marriage and family. She did some crazy things (such as with feces) but she was definitely pushed. She didn’t deserve this treatment by her gaslighting husband. He devalued her and discarded her like trash. LaJolla is a small community and I’m sure there was also a lot of shame. Yes, she snapped and killed them but I can understand. I’m not saying it’s right. I probably would have killed myself with what they put her through.

she didn't snap. she planned to kill them for 5 years, told her dwindling circle of friends she was gonna do it, took a refresher course in firearms training in case her aim had gotten rusty, bought a gun and bullets that would do the most damage, stole her daughters keys to 'break in' to Dan's house, investigators noted the bullets fired had the accuracy of a marksman, told her oldest daughter the morning of the murders "you know i had to do it, i couldn't let him win, one of us had to die" (apparently Betty was living in some bad western) no snapping, she simply closed the book on her 5 year plan. a stalker and a terrorist - glad she's locked up.
