Over my 70 years covering the jazz scene, Betty Carter was perfection personified. Without a doubt the purest jazz vocalist I have ever heard. Dave Milbourne -Toronto Jazz

Best of the best band leaders. Have you heard some of her interviews? Great shit! Too bad she's gone now.

I always liked Betty Carter. An exemplary vocalist with a modest and penetrating interpretation of all musical iterations !!!

I first heard her on the radio when I was in high school (and brother, I was HIGH) and her voice, improvisational approach blew me away, and when I learned about her as a person/artist/band leader/owner of her own record label to preserve her art... I was in love with this woman on all levels and will always be... She is on my MP3 player and my musician friends always say when they hear her "WHO WAS THAT?", and I say "REALLY? YOU DON'T KNOW HER?"... She has shaped Jazz history in a beautiful way

Betty is everything, dynamic interpretation, bending the tones, conducting the rhythm -- what I would give to see her again live! It’s spectacular to find this clip, thank you so much for posting. In my opinion this interpretation of the poignant lyrics of this song are her best - although a much later duet recording w/ Carmen McRae is also beautiful

My first hearing the great Betty Carter was on an episode of the Cosby Show. She sang "locomotion" the Betty Carter way. Its was amazing. Ella, Billie, Sarah, Nancy are all greats and icons. But theres something about Ms. Carter that separates her. I would to hear her sing Autumn in New York.

Her singing can be so achingly beautiful. Check out her version of Some Other Time on Inside Betty Carter. I recently heard Fred Hersch play this tune inspired by her definitive version of it.

I agree completely! Yet, Gloria Lynne ("I Wish You Love") has told me on more than one occasion that she is NOT a jazz singer--do NOT call her a jazz singer, even though her style was/is jazz and her mom's best friend was Sarah Vaughn. Gloria popularity waned in the 60s, but she's still with us in her mid-to-late 70s. Imagine NOT desiring to be in the company of an icon like Betty Carter who epitomizes America's only true art form--JAZZ! From the depth of my soul, I agree.

This is a classically great song, and she has a nice voice. But the rendition is terrible, too bizarre, too oriented toward just being different. The phrasing and cadence just don't make sense, sorry.

Bravo. Like Vaughan and (in a different way) Fitzgerald they sing like they could do without the words. But so then why sing songs and pervert the lyrics? They just want to show they have iron pipes. I find them annoying.
