Joan Mitchell is my art hero. I traveled to SFMOMA for the exhibit last year and found it to be an incredible lesson in painting. I found the huge scale of her work quite moving in person. I love this painting that you did, Betty!

I haven't heard of her but will check her out now so thanks for that. Congrats on the new studio and, 'why not just live there?' unless you have a family to worry about...I definitely would! I live in a lovely but tiny cottage on the Wet (west) Coast of BC. I love it but it's challenging to find space for working. Worse yet is finding somewhere to contain the work once I've created it! I put up an outside studio space (really just a large, glorified tent) that I can work in when the weather is agreeable but I certainly can't leave anything out there come October. Anyway, the more I watch you the greater my appreciation. Thanks

Thanks, Susan! My new studio is in a commercial building and there are rules about living there---basically, it's not allowed. And, I have a home. So, it's a nice refuge from everyday life! I'm very familiar with the Wet Coast. I lived in Seattle for almost 20 years before returning to (sunny) California. There's definitely challenges!

I love that you have all her books! So cool! I find that working on paper is so much more freeing (it's JUST paper). If you haven't already, give that a try.

@@BettyFranksArt I can use the unused watercolor paper with gesso. I misspoke - all the books I have seen about her art. Everytime i wear your scarf I get lots of compliments on it. Just FYI
