Betty, are you having fun no longer excepting commissions? I hope it is allowing you to paint freely moving in any way you like. Is has been many years since I accepted a commission. Last summer I was asked and decided to try once again. It took just over seven weeks to finish to the clients satisfaction, as the painting went through many changes. I kept repeating your little mantra "it's not them, it's me." In truth it was a little of one and a lot of another. 😅But I hung in there and learned a lot. We were both pleased with the end result which is all you can ask for. As for the future i'll be painting on my own and if someone likes the end result they are welcome to buy. I LOVED all six of your painting! Peace and Joy

You're sweet, Kay! This video was from a couple of years ago. I just now started accepting commissions again. Praying that they go smoothly! I'm making it clear up front that I need to paint in my own intuitive way. I'm accepting color choices, but will also be adding other colors, too, as I go. Wish me luck!!

I admire your work, it is so happy and colorful! You said several things during the video that resonate with me right now: that you found your voice/style, and it took a while, yet every step before that was relevant to your artistic development. That you have not gotten tired of your current style yet, but if you did the change would intuitively come. I have been asking myself that very question when looking at an artists body of work, does he/she get tired of painting in the same style over and over. You answered that question for me. I went back on your IG and is astounding to see the changes your work has been going through over the years. Happy painting💕🎨

This was just fascinating watching how you took these canvases from beginning to end. Your process is so interesting. And of course the finished paintings are gorgeous. I too like to paint around the sides, so I loved seeing that you do that too. One question. Is that gesso you add liberally to the paint or is matte medium?
@BettyFranksArt6 ай бұрын
HI John! Glad you liked the video. Back then (this video is from several years ago), I was using gesso as my white. On occasion, I would also use glazing medium (but, not too often because it takes too long to dry and I'm a very impatient painter!). Now I use Titanium White. Thanks so much for watching!

Besides, I haven't tried any art for about 50 years. I think I should get my feet wet again before I seek help. I'm interested in trying abstract art (something I've never done), but my brain keeps seeing patterns. Sorry for such a long comment, but you are certainly someone I would love to talk to personally. Awesome work...

Hi Betty : ) You know I am a huge fan of yours!, and I love the piece/print that I have of your art. Thank you for your video's that are so informative and helpful. You do a great job of teaching, and it's encouraging to me how you share your journey. I look forward to seeing more of your KZbin video's, because I'm continuously learning as an artist. I especially liked how you shared your work with commissions, as I used to do a lot of commissions when I was selling my handmade papers in the 80's. I stopped doing them though, because I found that for me, I found that my originals had a certain spark that I couldn't duplicate in the requested work. I've never succeeded much in making a series of works either, although I think it is important in establishing a style or an identity as an artist. When everything you make looks different from the previous work, customers can't readily recognize your work. So as you say, it is part of the journey. Thanks again for your awesome videos! I understand what you're saying about your process. But there are several pictures hidden inside these. Since you film the session, you could go back and revisit the imagery as it looked in an earlier stage and start a new set from the earlier idea. I like the way the color harmonies look at around 7:32 for instance. You can still experiment with layers even while keeping the general color scheme and mark configuration. Anyway, a lot of fun to watch. Thanks for sharing your approach. I'm a fan!

Non- objective abstract work always helps free the too-much-thinking habit, most of us are prone to do. Like using my left hand in drawings, it opens my work up to better results, automatique. I see you`ve succeeded in your process, & understand complimentary colors. It has an 'urban' vibe feel to it, idk, if that`s intentionable, beautiful, it`s freeing, in a way, looking @ . . .
@BettyFranksArt3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Mark! Using the non-dominant hand is always a great way to loosen up and add more organic marks. Not sure I was totally aware of the urban vibe. When I started creating with the clients in mind, I was aware of their modern home and wanted something that would work well in that type of architecture. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

And Bammm, that's when you mentioned the same thing. Bahaha. Can you expand to the left though? Or is there wires as well? Anyway, REALLY enjoyed this video. Thank you so much, Betty! 💖

I can't use the space to the left because it's the door. It's not often that I create 3 like this so, I'm not too worried about it.

Betty, are all of the Nova paints that you use opaque? Also, have you scheduled your live workshops yet? My daughter attends UCSC and I live in NM. Workshop coupled with a visit with my kiddo feels like heaven. Thx! Binge-watching your videos has been so much fun!

What kind of paper do you use for your smaller pieces. Thank you for your content you have appeared in my algorithm just when I needed an inspiration boost in my daily painting.

Yay! Super happy that you found me, my channel, and my art! I love using Bristol paper for my small pieces. Although I love texture, I love to build it up myself. Bristol paper is super smooth. It's easy to build up texture. With watercolor paper, I find it to be too rough overall (similar to canvas). Keep on creating!!

Thanks so much for watching! If you're located in the states, I like using the ones at Michael's craft store. They're long handled and are a dark grayish color. It's beautiful, Betty! Do you varnish your work once it's completed? Matte? Gloss?
@BettyFranksArt3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Michael! Yes I do! I use a spray fixative first and then a matte varnish. Here's a video showing how I varnish my art on paper. I use the same process for my canvas/wood pieces: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXPKZXqgls-Uhsk

Love the vid. and art, as usual Thank you. Curiosity: Do you hang your paintings in your home? Also, do you acquire other artists' work? Do you trade with other artists or buy?
@BettyFranksArt3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I hang paintings in my own home...some that stay for a long time and others for me to enjoy until they find a new home (revolving art gallery in my hallway!). I also purchase art from artists. I have a whole row of them in my bedroom where I wake up to inspiration daily!

Betty, how do you secure the plastic to the wall? Is it just painter’s tape or packing tape? Thanks for sharing parts of your journey.😁

Hi Stacy! I used regular masking tape. It'll probably pull up some of the paint when I remove it and I'll need to paint over it. Thank you for watching!

I love your process. What was the name of the wall art app you use? Do you ever rotate your canvases when you do three so the bottom one maybe could be on the top and a top one go down? I love how you manage to make them cohesive even though the one is lower. I’d struggle with that.
@danamarie47223 жыл бұрын
I commented too soon. You just brought number three up and rotated them. Love! I wish I had space to paint big like this.
@BettyFranksArt3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dana Marie! I app I use is called WallPicture. I rarely work on three at the same time. But, rotating them is a good idea. I kept them that way because I wanted one to flow into the next one. Thanks so much for watching!

I love your work. Can I use your technique to edit a picture I painted and I regularly hate this picture? It is dark red, black and orange. Is it okay to paint over a picture that was painted a long time ago?
@BettyFranksArt3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you can paint over the one you have. Is it acrylic? If so, I would just sand it down a little to roughen up the surface and then start painting again!

It was a little challenging. What's hard to see in the video because I sped it up is when I'm measuring out about where I should continue the marks/colors between the one on the right and the bottom one. Thank you so much for watching!

I have done 3 custom jobs and they were very nerve wracking. Each one would tell me I want my moms cabin, and I would say where is the photo only to be given a description. This happened 3 times and I lucked out that they came out right, even got a bonus. That was in the late 90,s and then my art went to the sideline, divorce and back to work. Now I am retired and want to do abstract. Betty my new art studio in my bedroom is going to work fine . Thanks for your videos.

Thanks, Paul! I talk about that in the video. The accent colors that the client selected didn't work with the mustard, so I went with grays. I'm happy to say that all three pieces have found new homes!

Did you ever think about changing the position of the canvases?
@BettyFranksArt3 жыл бұрын
No. I was once told that you should always rotate your canvas. Well, I didn't like it and there are no "shoulds" in art. My fields of flowers don't grow upside down or sideways! 😁 So, I don't rotate my canvas. However, I won't say I never rotate it. On occasion, I'll rotate it in my very early stages.

Betty I’ve been watching several of your videos and they are so helpful introducing me to abstract art. However I just am not understanding the point of making marks with pencils or China markers or whatever. I’m just not seeing the reason for making these marks. I’m not sure what else you could say to explain them. I will gladly keep watching your videos. They are so enjoyable.
@BettyFranksArt3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pam! Sometimes I do things for the process or to connect with the canvas. It's not always about what the viewer sees, but rather, what I feel and how I follow a process to get to the end result. I hope that makes sense. I appreciate you watching!
