Very interesting, glad found this. He Hon Michael Manley lift me as a youth on is campaign 1976, my mom was a nurse and also a homeguard on those days. I was 7. And I've always admire His wife at that time. However, my view, he's the best priminister Jamaica has ever had... Bless his soul.

Chelsea Clinton... Try and get your facts straight... Michael Manley was married five times (three times before he married Beverly)... And a few of them were most surely of the "...ruling class..." (as you put it). Michael had a penchant for good-looking women; particularly good-looking women of white heritage. And Michael also liked living well above the means of common folk. In fact, his fifth wife, Glynne Ewart (again, white heritage), was quite a wealth person (or at least, her ex-husband, who was best friends with Michael Manley, was). No doubt, Beverly was a good-looking young woman... But she was not of the preferred skin-color choice for Michael, as proven in his marriages... Beverly was simply useful to Michael's political ambitions. Beverly was a popular radio host... And she was a black woman... Both perfect for Michael's ambitions at the time. And don't for a moment think that Beverly didn't have her own ambitions... As did DK Duncan. Shoot... Just look at where they had their wedding... No... Not in some hall in the poor, downtown ghettos... But at Devon House, no less. Do you know what Devon House represents, Chelsea? Here's a hint... The "...ruling class...". These people were hypocrites... And still are hypocrites. They all brought death and destruction - along with many other politicians of that era, on both sides of the political boundary. Many, many people suffered because of what they promoted... While they reigned, enjoying the benefits of their power. Every heard of the Matalon family (including Eli Matalon, who was a government minister during Manley's reign)? Good friends of Michael Manley, and a family that made millions, and was known as one of the "...seven families..." of Jamaica. Every heard of Life of Jamaica insurance company? Created by Danny Williams (another government minister during Manley's reign), Douglas Fletcher, Adrian Forman... Made themselves a ton of money during Manley's reign. Which one of them do you think was a poor black man? Ever heard of Keeble Munn (another government minister during Manley's reign), who made his fortune, among other things, in Blue Mountain coffee, which received an exclusive geographic growing designation when the Coffee Industry Regulation Act of 1973 was passed... Giving his long held family coffee farms and one of the exclusive processing plants, a pretty strong monopoly within the industry. I'm sure you've heard that money doesn't grow on trees... Well, Keble Munn made sure that it did for himself... When he was a government minister of agriculture. Really... It would be laughable if it were not so sadly true... These men were all corrupt politicians who used their position for personal gain... Under Manley's reign... Just as Manley did for himself. And Beverly Manley was right there with them. But I will say... In the male dominated environment of Jamaica... Beverly wasn't able to make the millions those referenced above made. Yet, it sure looks like Bev has her uptown digs... No ghetto living for her.

I love Michael Manley and I believe that the Manleys ushered in the era of social justice in Jamaica.The younger Manley tried a lot of social programs in an effort to close the gap between the haves and the havenots.I came up in that era and I am obsessed with the Manleys.I suffer from Manleymania fi reel.

It seems many people have forgotten - or choose to ignore or remain ignorant - of the actual facts related to Jamaican politicians during the '70s... And Beverly Manley was certainly mixed up in it all. Anyone who lived in Jamaica during the '70s, and is honest, will know and admit that violence was at the center of our day-to-day experience... Violence that was instigated and promoted by these politicians; and both Michael Manley and DK Duncan were among the foremost of those doing so. Today, this "...modern-day Cinderella..." (a white Disney character that becomes a princess - honestly, you gotta wonder) says "...what we're really talking about is change in the balance of power in society... Of course we made mistakes, we were naive in a number of ways, but our intention was change that balance of power in society...". Really? In the ten years spanning 1970-1980 the annual murder rate in Jamaica rose from 152 to 899... That's an almost 500% increase over just ten years... And we're talking murder... The killing of people. And this woman brushes it off with her "...Of course we made mistakes..." remark. This is quintessential Beverly Manley... Downplaying the truth of a matter while justifying and uplifting herself. And I'm not even going to touch on the economic disaster that took place during the '70s. The thing with Michael Manley is that he could most certainly talk the talk... And get folks believing and supporting him regardless of his speaking being utterly dishonest foolishness. And Beverly was right there in lockstep with him. Beverly says that she had to learn that Michael Manley was a "...human being..."... Well... So were all the people living in Jamaica during the '70s who suffered traumatic mental and physical distress... Which of course includes the thousands who were murdered due to political violence instigated and promoted by the politicians she rubbed shoulders with, and even married. And know this... In 1981, just one year after Manley was put out of power, the murder rate dropped by almost half. Unfortunately... The culture of violence which came to the forefront during Manley's reign was by then firmly embedded in Jamaican society... And continues to this day with a murder rate that's one of the highest per capita in the world. But listening to Beverly Manley speak - this "...modern-day Cinderella..." - you hear nothing of this. And of course, the host, giggling like a little girl, knows better than to bring it up. Today... Who runs things in Jamaica? The poor? The disenfranchised? In the years that followed manley's '70s, living in JamaicaI I personally experienced poor black people saying that the worst people they could work for were rich black people. In all truthfulness, nothing really changed in Jamaica for the poor, and perhaps got even worse. And that's the legacy of Michael Manley and all those who supported him. Michael Manley was a narcissist, and his reign was, and is, a blight on the land of wood and water. And those who supported him were simply social parasites... The truth of which is exposed in this book authored by Beverly Manley.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions (if you don't know the proverb means, Google it). On another note... divisional politics is harmful to any nation, Jamaica being an small island nation (in comparison to the nations of the world) could least afford this kind of tribal approach to politics in her infancy.( yes her, Jamaica is my mother, caring, wise, compassionate but firm, progenitor of leaders and sage). understandably the Manley government existed in a very tumultuous time in the twentieth century. civil rights struggles in the u.s.a. the racial riots in England, anti- apartheid struggles in south Africa. widespread racism fuel by euro-centrism. Jamaica does not exist in a vacuum, therefore all these social dysfunctions weighted heavily on the post colonial Jamaica. we were in need of a Moses and a john the baptist.
