They were meant to have a kiss, but the censors would not have allowed it at that time. They revisited the exact same idea and actually went for it in DS9 a few years later.

I was going to comment the same thing. Trill are likely Pansexual as a species due to their shared consciousness being gender-fluid.

God what a grotesque reflection of both the homophobia of Americans in the early '90s and then the ridiculous puritanical television networks...

DS9 changed the trills so it was more of a even relationship between the host and trill. Each new combo on carried the memories but the new person also had their memories and personality becomes a mix.

Notably in one of the TOS films there are transporter ... issues that would give anyone pause. And that's without getting into speculation about how transporters work, which might influence whether you should use even a properly functioning one in the first place.

It's really weird seeing the Beta version of the Trill considering how one would become a main character and all the weird stuff like not being be able to use a transporter would just disappear.

I think being gay at that time the show was shot was still a little verboten in regular society. Homosexuality in the eighties and early nineties was still reeling from the whole AIDS catastrophe. So they took the safe path and had Beverly be a little unable to come to terms with Odan going from the cute guy, to Riker (her friend and colleague) to female Odan. And at the time, how long did a host live, and was it possible that this host would wear down and need replacing either from an accident or old age? I mean I think Ellen's sitcom where she came out was still in the future, as was Will & Grace. And the beating death of Matthew Shepard in 1998 in Wyoming kind of galvinized the general population on homosexuals not being deviants that needed to be tortured and killed. They cleaned up the whole Trill species by the time DS9 premiered and had a regular Trill character in the cast. Either that or there is another symbiotic race out there in Federation space calling themselves Trills.

I think RedLetterMedia is right that Riker was the producers' backup plan in case audiences weren't OK with the bald diplomat as a Captain and they had to kill him off and bring in "Shatner."
@TheOnyxSpy
@TheOnyxSpy Жыл бұрын
@@beanwithbaconmegarocket Oh yeah, I figured that was common knowledge. I'm just really glad that they decided to stick with Picard, and Roddenberry decided not to be so stubborn about wanting another "Kirk". Both captains are excellent in their own right, and I personally feel like if they HAD tried to copy Kirk again, it would've gone over poorly in the long run. In having a more diplomatic, calm, older captain, it allowed the show to explore other avenues, and it also was a showing that every captain has their own strengths they rely on, rather than all of them just being Kirk clones.

@TheOnyxSpy

@@beanwithbaconmegarocket If we are to go by the shows only, I am a bigger fan of Picard, but if we include the films, Kirk is more of my favorite. The depth of character and composure he shows in The Undiscovered Country especially is what drives me to liking Kirk more. The man realizes his time has come and gone, and it's his time to step out of the way of history and allow others to lead the future, and even changes his usual quote from "Where no man has gone before" to "Where no one has gone before". Meanwhile, Picard always seems to believe he is correct and is the one to save Earth or Starfleet, because he's Picard. The end of Nemesis could've been so much more poignant and handled in the way Star Trek usually would've handled that kind of situation, and instead it ended with a fistfight between the two Picards 🤷🏻

@@TheOnyxSpy The TNG films are trash imo. My first exposure to Kirk as a kid was the films and I loved them, but I don't enjoy TOS as much as those films. to your point, I also have critiques of TNG--one of which is it's too polished whereas Kirk and his Enterprise had a bit more of that brash adventurous spirit that is space exploration. TOS feels like a small ship exploring unknown waters whereas TNG often is the corporate-owned luxury liner following protocols and procedures as it calmly goes from task to task. Even still, I get a nice comfy feeling watching TNG.

Here's a dumb question: If the Trill can't transport because he's 2 beings in one body, does that mean pregnant women can't use transporters?
@NewbieStarTrek

Pregnant women definitely use the transporters, it's not clearly explained why it's specifically Trill, and also this type of thing never becomes an issue ever again.

I actually never had an issue with this episode or the ending. I always just thought, "Crusher's straight, it's been established she likes men so naturally that would throw her off." Always how I viewed it, she didn't like women so that's how it ended. I don't think they needed to just suddenly make her gay to appease and or anything. That's why I don't watch RWBY anymore.

Is the spoiler thing the transporter issue? Because I know that was different in DS9, but I just chalked that up to the transporter being differently tuned due to it being on a space station that's visited by hundreds, if not thousands of different races, while The Enterprise's transporter hadn't been updated to work with symbiotic species at that point.

1:04ish, about them kissing. I wonder if maybe you are misremembering the talk around the DS9 episode "Rejoined" which famously included a same sex kiss with similar themes, and maybe the tng episode where Frakes wanted to kiss a dude, but they changed the gender of the actor representing the non-gendered species?

This is one of millions of reasons why DS9 is superior. Three years after this episode, DS9 handled the Trill (the ST universe's analog for the trans community) better from the jump. Sisko immediately accepts his mentor and old friend's new identity without skipping a beat; nobody who new any previous Dax hosts hand the slightest problem addressing her as Jadzia. There is a same-gender kiss between Jadzia and the widow of one of Dax' previous hosts. In just a few years time, Star Trek handled this issue so, so much better.
