Bringing back 80's classics for a modern makeover rarely ends well, but Beverly Hills Cop 4 might just be an exception. Was it was worth waiting 30 years for a sequel? Let's find out.

Soundtrack was not a 10/10. Would have been if they used nothing but tracks from the first two, which is what I thought they were doing, but then they played some absolutely terrible modern rap and it made me sad. Mind you, this is coming from someone who's been listening to rap since I was 10. That rap remade of the theme was just horrible.

The soundtrack was over engineered and over synth-waved. Faltermeyer's original 1984 score used less than 5 instruments beautifully produced and recorded by him . Its power was its understated simplicity. Adding every single 1980s synth sound you can find to an orchestra and choir shows a lack of understanding of the music and movie genre.

This was not a good movie and I am a huge fan of the first two films. There was certainly nothing that was pushing the envelope in this movie. No trip to the strip club, no politically incorrect jokes or banter. It wasn't pushing any DEI or woke messaging but the earlier films were buddy cop movies more for guys and everything was very toned down in this movie. And Taggart, Foley, and Rosewood spent only a few minutes all together. It had a few nostalgic moments but I just couldn't give it a good review.

The Real MVP of Beverly Hills Cop 4 was and still is: Jerry Bruckheimer! The fact that this movie worked AT ALL is the Hail Mary🏈 of all sequels. This sequel shouldn't have worked for coming up short but effectively made the story coherent and well controlled. I understand this was one of Jerry's first major blockbuster so he knew he had to personally be involved in order for this film to work. What's so touching before the start of the film: he still credits his closest friend Don Simpson as co-producer even after his passing 30 years later. God Bless You Jerry...and Eddie Murphy, too! 😎😁

Honestly, I loved this movie - compared to what's been pushed out these last ten or so years, it felt like a breath of fresh air: Finally, a sequel to a beloved series that had the right dose of nostalgia, respect and competent storytelling that so many other long awaited sequels/reboots have been sorely missing (well, except for top gun of course). If this movie succeeds at one thing, I hope it's as a reminder to other film makers that movies are meant to be fun and not so damn serious and constantly having to push a bloody certain overdone "message".

Watched this recently with my partner and we were both pleasantly suprised by just how good it was and felt at home with the previous films. As someone born in 1980 seeing this was a real treat. It had all the right humor, action, characters, writing, and even the music fit perfectly. It made me feel like a kid again watching the first films for the first time. Even the whole idea of police corruption working with the cartels is totally relevant to today's society in the USA. I don't even have a copy of the first films in my collection, and I want this one to add to it. I didn't expect that Netflix to be able to pull it off like they did. I would definitely rank it as one, if not the best film of this year.
