I appreciate how you follow the diagnostic procedure. A great example in diagnostic logical thinking. You could have got a TDI wagon for a great deal. I once bought a BMW for $250 that the previous owner knew for sure had a failed oil pump and a destroyed engine. I bought it late at night, when I took a good look at it the next morning, I saw the oil pressure sender wire was grounded on the valve cover. I tightened the connector, reinstalled it and started the car. It ran great with no problems for another 5+ years before I sold it.
