I don't know about that. If I were an American travelling anywhere, I'd tell people I'm from Canada and "act" like that. That said, I am Canadian and we're loved and respected all over the world, even places where we got sucked into conflict with and by the US. And after Trump's reign, Americans are disliked everywhere .. even in America ! The US has a long way to go to recover from that shit-show. Biden has done a good job recovering the respect of the US by other countries but still has a way to go before the US is truly ever "trusted" again.

This kind of incident is not specifically related to Thailand, it can happen anywhere in the world. About 20 years ago my friend called me to send him some money while he was on holiday in Thailand. He had 3000 USD but he didn’t know what happened to it in his hotel room. After two days when he went to take his clothes from laundry shop they give him all the money and told him that it was found in his pocket. Rarely you see such an honesty in this world.

this isnt the issue. issue is if a local messes with you and you stand your ground other locals will beat you even tho the local person was in the wrong. this is a form of racism towards other cultures. but if you were to mess with the locals well whatever comes your way is karma.

Not really, in my country for example they will use reason and not just go against foreigners. for no reason. In the USA if you are a visitor from Europe the locals will not band against you but try to separate. Clearly, it depends some will do others will not, but in general. Also, the authorities will not sentence you to prison because you were the victim of a robbery and you defended yourself. In the USA. (not my country) there is the issue of racism, but that is another story.

@@Tabarnak-qg4kv You do realize you just contradict yourself right? You said it’s not the issue. But in the next sentence you say if you mess with one local the other locals will beat you even if the other local is wrong. That is the same thing as saying. DON’T MESS WITH THE LOCALS. You mess with one local. You mess with all of them. Even if they are wrong. So that is the issue. Messing with the locals🤷🏾‍♀️

@@Warrior20245 the law is not universal. The laws are different everywhere. They can come and go. "Not messing" with the locals is the point you seemed to of missed. Nobody is talking about a community of backward xenophobes. It is a fact that everywhere you go, anybody you meet is very likely to have family, friends, or some kind of allies. If you go somewhere new and start trouble, then it would be wise to expect your "victim" to have their own community on their side. "Dont mess with the locals" is universal the same way "dont mess with anyone" is. Absolutely nothing to do with racism.

After my Filipina wife and I divorced, I decided, "No more Filipinas for me!" I bummed around Asia for a while, and found myself in Rayong, Thailand. Met a really nice lady, she was a school teacher (educated!), which I knew meant she didn't need me to get to the USA, since several states are headhunting for Asian school teachers to fill vacancies. We hit it off, and fell for this beautiful Thai lady. After I had been in country for some time, I noticed that my GF's accent was a little different than other Thai's in Rayong. Thinking that perhaps she was from another part of Thailand (I am from Louisiana, where we have at least three regional accents ... country accent in the northern half of Louisiana, Cajun in the southern half, and in some parts of New Orleans, you'd swear you are in the Bronx! Oh yeah, then there's St. Bernard.... I don't know what kind of accent that is... anyway, I digress...)(and except for parts of New Orleans, our accents are pretty unique from the rest of the States), I asked her, "Your accent is a little different than the folks around here. What part of Thailand are you from originally?" She replied, "Oh! I am not from Thailand. I am from Philippines!" ........ Well, the story has a happy ending. The concentration of wealth in the Phillippines is astronomical, they own the businesses, government, customs, you can't do business without their approval or pay off, even if you are a low level tourist, the money you pay eventually finds it's way up the chain to the top, those bottom 20% you speak of have to pay bribes to be left alone and that is held at some point by the super rich, who control 98% of everything.

My girlfriend and I took the train to Surat Thani in 2018 enroute to Krabi.. When we got off at the train station, all the foreigners jumped into a van for a short ride to the bus station. As we got out of the van to walk over to buy our tickets at the bus station for 2 hour bus ride to Krabi, a vendor approached us and told us we had to buy the tickets from him since they were already sold out. We knew the last bus to Krabi was 7:00pm and it was 6:45, so we were tired and caught off guard and all of us paid about $10 each for the tickets. Turned out you buy the tickets on the bus. The conductor understood we got swindled ehen we showed him something that looked like a lottery ticket and had a laugh at our ignorance but he was cool and didn't ask for any additional fare. Been traveling around Thailand for 24 years and first experience of a scam. Its still one of our favorite destinations.

The suggestion to lie about the length of your stay proved helpful in many occasions. I traveled a lot all over the world, in any place, having worked for an airline. And I always answered, when questioned about the length of my stay, the maximum amount of time possible under the various circumstances. Even on the very day my departure was scheduled I will sidetrack about my stay. For example: A restaurant owner will tend to charge you more, if they get to know that it is the last day of your vacation, while it is inclined to make you pay less if he knows you will be going back to them many times in the days to come.

Lol. Thailand is a great place and if you do have a problem with someone here the chance is much greater that it will be with another tourist and NOT a Thai National. The place where the fight they are talking about occurred in a tiny town to the far North of Thailand near the Myanmar border. Around 5:35 he talks about wearing expensive jewelry etc. He's right, that's GREAT advise. For tourists this also applies to many places around the globe. "No Dar papaya" is a phrase in Colombia that means, "Putting yourself in a position where someone can take advantage of you." If it was translated literally it would mean don't give 'fruit/papaya' but it basically means don't put yourself into situations where you are more likely to be taken advantage of. Dressing more conservatively, not wearing expensive "looking" jewelry or flashing expensive iPhones makes you less of a 'target,' no matter where you are. Another translation we are more familiar with is, "don't get caught with your pants down."

I've been living here almost a decade now. Did had a few problems here and there but never with a Thai local. And to be honest I don't understand how one can have a problem with a local. They are (for the most part) extremely polite and respectful and as long as you are respectful and polite yourself you won't ever had any problems. I've always felt safe here no matter where I was in the country (I've been living in 10 different cities including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Chiang Rai, etc..). The biggest mistake that Foreigners does (especially younger ones) is they tend to take the kindness of Thai for weakness which is a big no-no. Don't let it go into your head: Thais are very respectful but they have no problems at all turning it on if they feel disrespected. Thais public image is also very important for them. So if they feel disrespected (especially in public) you're gonna have problems. Beside that really it just all comes down to being respectful and treating people the way you would like to be treated. I've met countless of Thais people and friendship over the years and I have nothing but love for this beautiful country that I now call my second home.

@Ice Cream Wet Dream You ask me to be objective while you aren't. Obviously Thailand isn't safe EVERYWHERE. For example I would never recommend to anyone to go to the island of Kao Tao (around 15 white people died there in the last 8-10 years... alot of people think there's actually a serial killer there). Some places in Pattaya, Phuket aren't safe also. But I mean this is well known and well documented. Anyone that does a little bit of research will know. But if you live in downtown Bangkok or here in Chiang Mai or any big city (or even small for that matter) the chance of you running into trouble is very very very small. My hometown of Montreal is more dangerous than here and that's a fact. Alot of the major cities in the world (and coutries for that matter) are way more dangerous than here. I have no idea where you took your numbers to justify that Thailand is a ''notoriously dangerous spot''. This is absolutely wrong. Yes there is places to avoid (and unfortunately those are the places where the travellers goes the most and I don't know why because it's well known that's it's dangerous there). But if you go to Bangkok I can assure you that nothing will happen to you unless you really do something out of line. Apart suicides I've never heard of a foreigners getting murdered in Bangkok for decades now. If I was an Asian I would be way more worried about living in USA now than being a tourist in Thailand. I speak from life experience and I've been here for a decade. I live in a Thai neighborhood and I'm always surrounded by Thais people. They never did anything wrong to me. People need to do their research before they come because yes there is some dangerous places. But if you do your researchs and plan things in advance you shouldn't have to worry about anything. I live here. I travel the country ups and downs. I know what I'm talking about.

The causes of problems in Thailand are multiple, one of which is that Thai men naturally know what tourists do to their women. They feel jealous and want to protect their women from the tampering of tourists, and this is undoubtedly very natural. Therefore, tourists must have good morals and good behavior. The financial and social pressures they have and seeing their women with tourists makes the matter very complicated.

I've been to Thailand several times and think I know how to stay out of trouble pretty well. Still, there have been two instances that were pretty sketchy. I'll just cover one of them. I got a ride from a tuktuk driver to go to the Patpong area. This guy went way off the beaten path though. I had no idea where I was. He took me to a place surrounded by trees, with a small parking lot and small building with what appeared to be a bouncer by the front door. There were no other buildings that I could see. I stupidly followed him through the entrance because I wanted to know what the Hell was going on. When I got in there, I was taken to another room. In that room there was a guy sitting on a couch, and across from him was a large window with several women behind it. Maybe 30 feet wide. They were scantily dressed, sitting on stools and their ages probably ranged from 16 to 40. He started asking me what I was looking for in a woman, and proceeded to tell me what each woman was good at (sexually). Then he told me how much they would cost me. This went on for about five minutes. I didn't say a word. I waited for him to finish. I then calmly asked him why I was brought here. He looked confused. He said I was there because I told the driver to take me. I told him that I hired the driver to take to Patpong. He told me to wait and he left the room. He came back in about ten minutes. Between that time I was getting nervous because it was just me and the other women, the bouncer, and that guy in the building (that I knew of). Moreover, I didn't know where the Fuk I was. He came back and apologized. He said another driver would take me to Patpong. When he walked me out to the parking lot, the tuktuk driver that brought me there was beaten severely. He was laying on the ground moaning and groaning. It looked like a group of guys jumped him.

Usually they ask tactfully like: "do you want to meet some women,have fun" then when you go the owner cuts they driver a referral fee. I guess he expected you to just go along with it - to be honest if I was in my 20s and in that scenario I would have picked a girl even if I was gonna do nothing to her, say my please and thank yous, make sure they know ill be in Thailand for a while and might bring some friends (comment how a friend of yours would love this and you and ask about a random date like: "is there a theme or specials Thursday?) Yeah, I agree. But oftentimes, in these cultures, showing a sign of weakness can also mean something like "Ok, let's fuck him up, he won't do anything anyway". The best thing is just to avoid these kinda places, people or anything like this. Especially in the countryside, there are just so many absolutely uneducated people who got nothing to lose. Some of these people have no clue what they are doing. They often times don't even know there will be any consequences. They are not capable of thinking this far. Don't get involved with them. Stay far away from them.

@@hanneswolff5363 I agree with your assessment, to a point. You will find people, with a wolf mentality, in every country. Preying on the weak and unsuspecting. Being from the Detroit area, I would rather be in the WORST area of Bangkok than the worst area in Detroit. A lot of it has to do with the consequences of crimes that each country dishes out. Thailand is BRUTAL (especially to their own people) when it comes to crime. Twi tourists were killed, ten years ago, and the 3 Thai citizens that committed the crime were tried, convicted, and executed within one year. The Thai government even showed their people what happened to them for deterrence. It worked!!!

Where would you recommend staying? For a month in Bangkok?
@michiganspencer6920
@michiganspencer6920 Жыл бұрын
@@drewshepherd7601 That would depend on what your plan is. If it's to party and meet beautiful women, I recommend the downtown district around Sukhumvit rd. (between Asok and Soi 4). That would be the Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza entertainment areas. If your plan is to see the city, anywhere outside that area will work. Try to find a place that you can do a short term lease for a month. Bangkok is known for thousands of places that offer completely furnished - and serviced - apartments and condos for that (far cheaper than staying in hotels). Wherever you stay, make sure you're within 5 to 10 minutes walking distance from a BTS or a MRT station to get around the city (very cheap and super clean transit systems).

@@michiganspencer6920 Any chance you could name your favorite monthly lease places? I've just done a lot of research on this but there's always something a little wrong with them - a bit of a longer walk to the BTS, or it's close to a BTS but one very far away from the center, or a bit on the pricy side, or looking a bit run down, or got trashed in recent reviews, and so on. Maybe I'm beeing choosy, I mean they're all much better than hotels but someone told me I should be able to find a great one with pool and gym near a central BTS/MRT station and I've been looking ever since, can't settle for less now

I was a single girl of 25 years traveling all over Thailand for a month. I never had anything stolen. I wasn’t overcharged. Most services and menu prices were clearly written. I wasn’t drinking or going to bars or places like that. I had a great time, people were kind and within social boundaries. I loved it there, made great memories learning to rely on myself, trust myself and learn that I could take care of myself in a foreign country.😊

Agreed. Most Thai restaurants (especially local places) are insanely cheap. I often wondered how they stay in business charging $3-$5 for a full meal. Tipping is not a part of Thai culture but I always tip at these places. The locals keep the country running.

Thai people support each other so dont get in argument.Well it happens almost everywhere why would another country people will support or believe u than their own people in this we need common sense as how to behave in which place. But i m sure if u would go to other explore worthy places rather than red light area and bars + on top of that with ur 0 common sense ability then u just invited all of this upon u in any country.

I know four men were sent to prison for 2 years for beating the elderly couple and their son. It should also be noted that Thai citizens that knew this elderly couple were very instrumental in pushing for justice to be done in this case.

I took the sky train in Bangkok one evening with a friend and our two Thai girls. We were a little tipsy from drinking Singha and yes, we were loud. Everyone in the train had their eyes fixed on their mobiles apart from the occasional corner eye stares. The following day during breakfast, the Thai girl I was with revealed that it's very rude to be loud in public places. She told me she was embarrassed when we took the train because firstly we were drunk and secondly, even if the locals are bothered, they may never tell you which hit hard as we had been partying so much and we were noisy in the wrong places. So adding to the list: Don't be noisy in your apartments, in the trains or even in public transport. In the hotels you can probably get away as you will be with your fellow travellers and the rest of the foreigners.

I've seen it happen with my own eyes. I was standing outside a food stall in the red light district. A British couple were sat down drinking. The guy started arguing with a gay Thai guy. He was livid, I thought it was going to escalate there and then . I remember the look he gave the English guy , a Bruce Lee stare, that's when I knew he wasn't finished with him for disrespecting him in front of everyone and his people. It calmed down and they finished their drinks in silence for about 5 mins . The couple got up , and started walking towards the main road. They were obviously sure the argument was over for good. They couldn't of been more wrong. The Thai guy involved quietly got up out of his chair, I saw a bottle in his hand. He crept up out of his chair, glancing side to side to check for police, then he started running very fast behind them and broke the bottle on his head, full force , ran off , hurdled the storm drain and darted off into the night across the other side of the main road. The guys Mrs, English girl started screaming because of all the blood from him getting bottled pouring onto the street . He was mouning, clutching his head. The Thai stall owners just stared and gave each other a knowing glance as if to say "That what happens if you mess with the wrong guy here , gay or straight." The police came, but it was pointless, the man was well gone. They pretended to look for him by looking down the street, but nothing happened and no one dared to give witness to the police, it would of been pointless anyway. The couple got a taxi to the hospital, with the girl weeping for her man, and the red light vibe carried on as if nothing had happened. A chatted to a Thai stall owner about what happened. He said they were all ready to deal with violence or whatever they choose to be , and showed me his weapon of choice under his stall, a very nasty looking club, full of graffiti..... Btw, it had definitely been used.

Been twice to Thailand for several months in total whilst backpacking several countries in Asia. Countries like Indonesia, Laos, South Korea, Singapore etc. And I simply stayed away from socializing with local woman (dated a Korean lady from NY in Seoul that I’ve met in Thailand, which I found no problem to deal with since she was raised within a western orientated culture, I could relate to her) and instead spend time with western woman that were also traveling. I was not and never have been interested in bars or prostitutes, other then going out with people I knew to go have fun and dance. I drank some social drinks with people but never got drunk or did illegal substances in new situations (hardly did “drugs” unless locals did them with me, smoked weed in Kho Phangan, had hash in Korea and opium in Laos, but never asked for it or went looking for it. People would offer it to me and I knew the people that would be offering it before hand, but it’s always an unnecessary risk you’re taking and I would just avoid it all. Also don’t get stupidly drunk it’s a recipe for disaster at home and abroad. I stayed away from people trying to get me somewhere instead I would use to ask other travelers where to go and what to avoid next to checking out the ever present Lonely Planet guides everyone is carrying around. So no good to be true scams that promises you to make easy money smuggling drugs, precious metals or gems (and they sell you colored glass as gems for instance) No invitations to massage parlors in connection to prostitution or bars, No invitations to come out to a private poker game where huge bets you can’t counter is used to get you to loose all your money (this one happened to a guy I met in Bali that was invited by a “friendly local guy” guy he met on the beach and who later invited him at some remote private poker party in the evening where he god scammed by the huge amount they would bet against him. Money he didn’t have and bluffing him out of the game, a set up that they lured him into with a manipulated game. And being out in the dark with strangers not knowing where you are with them ganging up on you, not a good idea. It’s about setting your own agenda and not getting yourself into vulnerable situations where other lead you around. Plus don’t be a opportunist pig taking advantage of poverty and vulnerable woman etc. it’s the easiest way to avoid the sinister and illegal side of a countries society.

Good of you to debunk some of these stereotypes. It’s regrettable that there are some of these western visitors who visit a country a few times and then fancy themselves “experts” and proceed to perpetuate unhelpful stereotypes based on their own suspicious nature. Yes, of course there are scammers in Asia. But that’s not unique to just Asia. DO NOT leave money in a padlocked zippered bag (both zipper tabs locked together) in your hotel room or left on a Group tourist bus(even if your tourist guide says your belongings are safe left on bus) They are not! Your guide, bus driver, and the luggage handler that lives under the bus in the luggage compartment has access to your belongings. They can separate the zipper seam with a ballpoint pen, steal your money in small amounts that you would notice(Count and keep track of your money daily in a tiny note book is how I found out money was missing). When they are done stealing they will grab the padlocked zipper tabs and run them back and forth over the zipper seam until bag is resealed. Then you wonder how the hell they got into your padlocked bag. Now you know! This happened to me in Thailand traveling with an organized group tour.

I remember when this happened in Pai. Very disturbing. The guy was just trying to break up a fight but they turned against him and literally tried to murder him. They even dragged his body to the fields off the street thinking he was dead. They tried to beat him to death just for breaking up a fight. Then the police put him in jail with those same guys just to get money out of him. Very disturbing and sad all around. I gotta say I’ve lived here 6 years and I felt safer here than back in my own hometown in Los Angeles. I’ve always felt welcomed and never had anything stolen. I can’t say the same back in LA.

That was his mistake. getting involved in something that was not his business in a foreign country. I am in Thailand now, and lived here full time for more than 8 years. Don't giet involved in situations that aren't your business.

@William Morris Thailand is a shithole if you can't display basic human altruism without nearly getting murdered by savages.

He watches someone else's video and says "yes, i agree.." SO informative. I should have just watched the video he's watching and that would have eliminated the redundant middle man.
