Great work in spotting the difference between the real tree and the suckers in the leaves!

Wow I never seen a sucker like that before. It's really trying to smother the graft.

Note also that for the enterprising avocado aficionado, a sucker represents a grafting opportunity, perhaps to have two varietals in one tree!

True. Or, maybe he can get some scions from the original GEM and graft the rootstock.

Thanks for sharing I did 2 Shorts on this a couple days ago one in english y uno en español. I baby my trees so much I pop them of while they're little nubs to avoid a major cut or wound on the trunk. Would you consider cutting the thick trunk like rootsucker and barkgrafting it? Maybe add some Marvel like Gray Martin does to his GEMs.

I think that's a great idea if a rootstock sucker gets so large like that one. Graft it to GEM again or a second variety.

so, on the first tree, is it OK to cut off that big sucker? and the second tree, are you going to try and cut off that honkin' sucker? nothing to lose? how big is too big? Our Gems have lots of suckers too? Is it a variety thing??

I'd take a chainsaw to that sucker. But it might kill the tree outright...

That's an interesting idea. I don't think GEM is more susceptible to rootstock suckers, at least not significantly more. It's pretty common on all varieties. But since GEM trees like to be dense with foliage all the way to the ground unless you skirt them, a rootstock sucker can be hidden in there for a long time. On that first tree, I would just cut it off. But on the second tree, I would consider cutting it back to about knee height and grafting GEM onto it again.

Did you get any fruit from the sucker?

So why did you allow them to grow? Is part of a test?

Makes sense not to cut it off.
