I know this is not important because it is a KZbin comment, but being someone who follows city planners on this site, I understand that there are business interests in car centered infrastructure. I am also aware, however, that many of the arguments against it are also coming from a similar place of vested interest, and not ideology. The reason there has been success in opposing, or even reverting, this type of development comes from communities and property owners that have come to the conclusion that other forms of development serve their needs better, and lobby extensively to get their way. To address some of the examples in this video, here are some of the sources of opposition to said developments: The concern over road width comes from an understanding that the limiting factor in traffic throughput more often comes from intersection and interchange designs than lane count. As such, wider roads and highways tend to only increase maintenance costs, while also displacing existing homes and businesses. The concern with lower density developments, such as exurbs, comes from the number of taxpayers per mile of infrastructure, and density increases are sometimes desired to limit budget shortfalls without increasing tax burden on existing owners. The concern with induced demand on traffic stems from the corresponding induced demand for parking, with parking infrastructure coming at a high cost relative to the additional shops or rental spaces that property owners would greatly prefer to be allowed to install, but can't due to parking minimums. Lastly, the concern with noise and particulates comes from the lower property values that come with them, along with increased healthcare costs of those living there. On a slight tangent, I know that it is sometimes tempting to blame an irrational opponent for an attack on one's way of life or interests, but that can become self-deception. If the opposing group is actually sufficiently and rationally motivated, such an outlook might result in their destruction, rather than preservation with an un-ideal, but necessary, compromise solution.
