To everyone who is planing on buying Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro headphones, you can use this headphones for mix and mastering but only with EQ CORRECTION, otherwise its a big no, high end and seperation between mid and high frequencies will destroy your mix i am telling you this with experience, i have the 80ohms version end i am using a sound profile and they are good, my mixes sound good on every device.That's my honest review and real opinion about them.
@hartyewh16 ай бұрын
Glad someone mentioned this. Of course with time and practice one can mix with almost anything, but Beyers aren't well tuned by default until T1.2. EQ makes the good, not great, but good.
@JonnySoulRaps6 ай бұрын
@@hartyewh1 can you guys expand on this? i'm new to mixing. how do we use/why do we use eq correction on the headphones?
@hartyewh16 ай бұрын
@@JonnySoulRaps Frequency responses on headphones are mostly a mess. Mixing is in large part about balancing different FR areas (where say instruments are positioned) so if you're headphones say the bass guitar is quiet, but most other headphones, speakers etc play it loud then you mixed it twice as loud as you should have. A simple example. Most headphones have notable issues with that unlike speakers which are more normal even if not good ones. DT770 are very poorly suited for mixing in that sense, but if you EQ them to for example Harman (Oratory1990 preset) then you'll hear a more accurate balance that's closer to what headphones should sound like. If you use headphones and speakers or even multiple you might be able to find a balance between them that's fine, but they could all have similar weaknesses or the weakness of one pushes you to over correct for another.
@DroidFlamesMC6 ай бұрын
@@hartyewh1 Do you know if the DT700 would require the same process? I think I heard somewhere that EQing them makes them sound worse and loses detail
@hartyewh16 ай бұрын
@@DroidFlamesMC DT700 is better tuned, but like every headphone EQ improives them meaningfully as well. EQ in general doesn't have any negative side-effects unless the EQ itself is weird somehow. Some headphones can't handle the bass shelves, but that's about it.

With current technology advancements, I've heard that "higher ohms = better quality" is a thing of the past. With the new DT 770 Pro X being only 48 ohms, how does it compare to your older 250 ohm headphones? Is there a difference in clarity and/or noise floor?
@Dex4Sure4 ай бұрын
I'm sure 48 ohms isn't an issue anymore. Modern solid state amps also are very efficient and their output impedance is so low that having higher ohm headphones isn't really important. Back in the day when amps had terrible output impedance, having higher ohm headphones helped to offset that issue.

Im listening to this on the 80 ohm dt770 pro limited edition, i bought on amazon new for $160. I can't justify trading my current headphones for these. The detachable cable is a good upgrade, it would be nice to have since the DT770 pro comes with only a 10 foot cable, which can be too long if you want to use it with your phone and having to fold it up into a pocket or bag is annoying. The sound on the 770 pro is hard to beat for the price and the 770 pro is extremely durable and well made already. I might look into getting these if my dt770 pro breaks, but since they are so well made it will probably be at least a decade before that happens xD

DT 770 pro have studio quality but V-shaped sound. DT770 pro X have a strong V curve and are not as balanced as studio headphones should be. They have too much highs and the bass is boosted. As long as you have calibration for them, it'll be fine, but the new model is not just an upgrade. It's an upgrade in the construction, which is sturdier, looks are also more polished. The sound is not better though. It's less balanced and especially bad for mixing. You didn't even review their sound, only read the data on the box, which is firstly irrelevant, because you can't hear 40kHz. Secondly the new model IS NOT mimicking the sound of the old one. It has a different signature and it's far from what is practical in studio IMO. It's almost like saying that you should be mixing on Airpods although frankly, airpods have more neutral sound. Without calibration, these headphones will cause you overdoing corrections and it's not balanced enough to mix. Luckily we have calibration even for free, so these things can be corrected. Extra sensitivity is of course welcome and build quality is fantastic. If not for the trashy earpads, I'd say they're built better than DT700.
@rhalfik7 ай бұрын
@Ayel-wl4ix For mixing you should look for open back models that are present in any calibration database, so that you can neutralize their character. Oratory1990 runs a free database, which is full of high quality headphones. Sonnarworks does the same but the service is paid. IF you want something that's neutral out of the box, without any EQ needed, then look at any headphones tuned close to Harman OE2018 target, which is Hifiman Ananda Nano, DCA E3, Audeze XC, Beyerdynamic DT880, DT900 prox and similar. I'd like you to notice though that there is a big difference between mixing and mastering. For mastering you want boosted highs, because they make your life easier. Hifiman Ananda Nano has a tasteful boost and that makes them very well averaged and suitable for both mixing and mastering. The available preset makes very little difference. DT700 prox is also decent IMO, and although it has slightly pushed forward midrange, none of it's features are broken like the highs and bass on DT770 proxle. I swear, Mr reviewer here talks like he didn't even bother to check on his recordings afterwards. You'll be overcutting highs and bass with these things. With DT700 prox you may not notice boominess on voice, which may be a problem but hopefully you'll catch it on speakers. Lastly the old DT770 pro, despite also being slightly V-shaped is still a more balanced model and proven to be useful, although more for mastering than mixing.
@rhalfik7 ай бұрын
@Ayel-wl4ix I can't see my comment so I'll assume it was deleted. In short better for mixing are: DT770 pro, DT700 prox with an asterisk (if a voice is boomy, you won't know this until you listen on speakers), DT880 pro, DT900 prox, Hifiman Ananda NAno, Audeze XC, DCA E3. The last two are crazy expensive but they are better for mixing than DT770proxle. This version resembles some Superlux headphones in it's balance. It has too little midrange to be a good mixing reference unless... You calibrate it. If you stick to EQ for mixing, you'll be doing reasonably well regardles of the model, with rare exceptions. But it has to be parametric EQ and the profile must be good, like Oratory1990. For mastering it's a different story. It depends what you're mastering, but for many things the proxle variant will make you overcopensate, so it may be a good idea to use a little bit of EQ on it for mastering too.
@rhalfik7 ай бұрын
I forgot recent Sennheiser models, which are close to perfection in their balance - HD400 pro, HD560s and HD490 pro. You can mix on them without calibration and you'll see good results. I repeat - DT770 proxle ARE NOT reference headphones. Not by a long shot. You may like their sound, but as a monitoring device they suck big time and will cause you to overdo your edits, leaving your material lifeless and lacking in bass and detail.

Guess I'm better off sticking with my DT770(250ohm)'s then? I already had it professionally modded with a detachable cable anyways. What i'd personally LOVE to upgrade to at some point are the Dan Clark Audio E3's as far as closed backs are concerned. $3000 CAD later. ;) I also had the DT900 Pro X, but they lacked clarity, and barely sounded that much more open than my DT770's. The 900 Pro X's sounded as if there was almost like a veil masking the vocals and overall sound. The clarity just wasn't there.

Didn't feel like paying half the price of a new pair of MDR-7506s for new earpads, so went with a Audio Technica M50X. Really good headphones but after a bit over a year, same problem with the earpads ; these are cheaper to replace than the Sony's but still, I feel it's time to move away from artificial leather and move on to something a bit more 'premium' with velours earpads. Which led me to Beyerdynamic. I was going to go for these Limited Editions but then I saw that the price of the DT700X is not that much higher : in fact, it's 169 euro for the DT770s, 199 euro for the DT770 Pro X Limited Edition and 239 euro for the DT700 Pro. For only 40 euro, I can get the more premium DT700Xs. Also, as you say, what's with that 'limited edition' ? What if you need to replace something down the road (do the earpads of the regular DT770 fit this limited edition, or the cable from the DT700 Pro X ? I'm looking for closed headphones and am a fan of Beyerdynamic. I use Sound ID Reference to EQ my Beyerdynamic DT990 because I like more base in my headphones. Do you think I can save some money and go for the DT 770 Pro instead of the DT700 Pro X? I like the design of the old ones more and since I can get more base through Sound ID reference, I dont see any need for the DT700 Pro X.

Thanks for this comparison. So I have the DT 700 Pro X and what I remember from the DT 770 Pro was a more "spacious" sound all around. Do the DT 770 Pro X has that? And do you think it would be redundant to have both 700 and 770 Pro X? Thanks!

what are the main differences between the 770 pro x and the 990s?

The regular DT 770 is still the GOAT for me. Too good to move on from honestly 😅

The trademark 770 have a breaking-in period that usually fixes, smooths over the hyperextended high-range. My 30 year old 770s sound very tame compared to a brand new pair.

I’m planning to gift this to my boyfriend for his birthday and want to know which headphones are good for music production. He is currently using Audio technica m50x. Can you please suggest me is the beyerdynamics dt 770 pro better than audio technica?

Question: Does this also need as much amplifier power as the 32 ohm? or is it louder?

Will the 990 with detachable cable come too..? And also i noticed the cable connection is not a regular 3.5mm aux connection.. was it a standard XLR connection..?

Mini XLR to 3.5mm
@MreenalMams9 ай бұрын
@@elyad67 oh i didn't know there was such a thing as mini XLR.. either case, I'm guessing its gonna be slightly harder to find a replacement cable.. which kinda defeats the purpose of having a detachable cable..

For mix and master I use a AKG 812 (expensive but love it) but they are open, so I need a closed headphone for vocal recording, still 770pro LE recommended or better 700pro? Please, I´m still confused

Will I need a headphone amp going through a Scarlett Focusrite 2i2 gen 4 Interface with 250 ohm cans?
@rubenzemog4 ай бұрын
I use them as a secondary reference just to recheck high and mid frequencies. They are quite revealing up there. But they are not good, you defenetily can not mix and master with those, they lack bass and mid bass.

I have the original 770 I bought in 2020. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve actually used them and now the left side of the set no longer works. 1st and last pair.

I have the exact same issue, left speaker decided to die all of a sudden, they're not completely dead but the sound is barely audible. Sent to a technician and he confirmed to me that there's nothing wrong in the cables, it's just the speaker's dead. The odd thing I've seen numerous people like you with the same exact complaint.

The bass is different from Dt 770 Limited edition and the 80 ohm 770. Limited edition is loud straight from the get go due to the low ohm.

How well will the 770x work for mastering in a home studio?
@VeitLehmann7 ай бұрын
I wouldn't recommend closed-back headphones for mastering. The DT 880 are very transparent and linear for the price, or the Sennheiser HD 560S. Both are not expensive at all for what you're getting. All 3 closed-back Beyerdynamics are very nice, but more suitable for tracking, maybe mixing. But if you need closed-back headphones and can't afford another open-back, and/or don't want two different pairs of headphones, they might be pretty much the best option out there. I'd rather go for good open-backs, and add cheaper closed-backs for tracking. E. g. the Superlux HD 660 Pro.
