In this video, I review the new Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X Limited Edition headphones. And I compare them to the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 ohm headphones and the Beyerdynamic DT 700 PRO X headphones. I’ll let you know all the differences between the three and which one is best for you. I talk about sound quality, build quality and what you can expect from mixing and tracking with these headphones.

Nice roundup. I was in the market for a new pair of headphones recently., I was keen that everything be replaceable so I went for a pair of 700 Pro-Xs. I'm delighted with them. When investing this sort of money in headphones I expect to keep them through multiple rounds of replacement pads, so paying a bit extra over the 770s was worth it to me.

Well, again a nice review 👍 I have 2 original DT770 pro's: 1x 250ohm open back in my studio and 1x 80 ohm close back on my PC in my livingroom. I also have wireless Sennheisers RS175, but the sounds/frequenties/dynamics/etc. are by far not as good as the Beyerdynamics. Nice upgrade of the 770 but I don't see any advantage of a detachable cable (yes it's easier to replace, but I don't have a dog 😂). My headphones are always plugged in and I don't travel with them, so for me I'll stick to my great and original 770's....

I'm looking for closed headphones and am a fan of Beyerdynamic. I use Sound ID Reference to EQ my Beyerdynamic DT990 because I like more base in my headphones. Do you think I can save some money and go for the DT 770 Pro instead of the DT700 Pro X? I like the design of the old ones more and since I can get more base through Sound ID reference, I dont see any need for the DT700 Pro X.

MOTU M2 for sure. I have DT 880, 600 Ohms, and most interfaces couldn't deliver enough juice for tracking. I finally got the MOTU M4 which drives them loud enough, but I have to crank them to almost 100% when recording. About 50% when listening. I had the Arturia MiniFuse 2 and the UA Volt 2 here as well (both of which should be more powerful than the Focusrite according to Julian Krause): The MiniFuse was too quiet, the Volt 2 was about as powerful as the MOTU but was missing some features that I wanted.

@SonyKent Sure, I'm currently using a 'Cable Matters' one from Amazon. It has a braided cable that I find a little easier to bend so it doesn't keep nudging my shoulder. I was considering trying a 90 degree converter but this cable is fine for my needs. Hope that helps. 👍🏻

Im listening to this on the 80 ohm dt770 pro limited edition, i bought on amazon new for $160. I can't justify trading my current headphones for these. The detachable cable is a good upgrade, it would be nice to have since the DT770 pro comes with only a 10 foot cable, which can be too long if you want to use it with your phone and having to fold it up into a pocket or bag is annoying. The sound on the 770 pro is hard to beat for the price and the 770 pro is extremely durable and well made already. I might look into getting these if my dt770 pro breaks, but since they are so well made it will probably be at least a decade before that happens xD

Nice and well presented video, but I had to disagree... The new DT 770 PRO X has an entirely different tonality. (compared to my DT 770 PRO 250 ohms, or the 80ohm) If you ever tried the DT 700 X that has a pretty close sound, but with more emphasis bass and highs. The new one also has a narrower soundstage and more recessed + differently toned mid range that I didn't like. It sounds boxy and un-natural with both female and mail voices that resulted an unpleasant listening experience. Anyone that says these headphones are similar in sound, that lies. Even Beyerdynamic.

To everyone who is planing on buying Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro headphones, you can use this headphones for mix and mastering but only with EQ CORRECTION, otherwise its a big no, high end and seperation between mid and high frequencies will destroy your mix i am telling you this with experience, i have the 80ohms version end i am using a sound profile and they are good, my mixes sound good on every device. That's my honest review and real opinion about them.

I wonder why so many people go on mixing with closed headphones like all these DT7xx? Doesn't the closed system prevent from having a proper stereo soundstage image which is very important when you mix and master? Aren't DT990 more suitable for this mixing and mastering, leaving closed headphones to their more appropriate usage, which is recording and pleasure listening?

I wouldn't recommend closed-back headphones for mastering. The DT 880 are very transparent and linear for the price, or the Sennheiser HD 560S. Both are not expensive at all for what you're getting. All 3 closed-back Beyerdynamics are very nice, but more suitable for tracking, maybe mixing. But if you need closed-back headphones and can't afford another open-back, and/or don't want two different pairs of headphones, they might be pretty much the best option out there. I'd rather go for good open-backs, and add cheaper closed-backs for tracking. E. g. the Superlux HD 660 Pro.

I must say I was a big fan of your videos. But with this video you lost a little of my trust. These headphones are far away from being a good studio headphone. The are closed backs and the voicing of the driver is nowhere near flat. The highs are so overturned that you can’t use them for a long time without ear fatigue. I hoped you are a little more critical about that. As you said in your other videos: the Neumann Ndh-30 are mastering headphones or the Sennheiser Hd650. But not this headphones. Okay they are in a totally different price range. But the 770 pro are really not for mixing and mastering.

I respect your opinion about the headphones, but did you miss my criticism of the harsh highs in this video and multiple videos? And that the 770s are not flat and how I need to compensate for the loud high frequencies? And by the way, there's no mention of mastering in this video. I'm not sure how much of the video you watched, but you seem to have missed a lot. If you're not a fan of them, that's one thing, but to expect me to be OVERLY critical of headphones I really like doesn't benefit anyone.

DT 770 pro have studio quality but V-shaped sound. DT770 pro X have a strong V curve and are not as balanced as studio headphones should be. They have too much highs and the bass is boosted. As long as you have calibration for them, it'll be fine, but the new model is not just an upgrade. It's an upgrade in the construction, which is sturdier, looks are also more polished. The sound is not better though. It's less balanced and especially bad for mixing. You didn't even review their sound, only read the data on the box, which is firstly irrelevant, because you can't hear 40kHz. Secondly the new model IS NOT mimicking the sound of the old one. It has a different signature and it's far from what is practical in studio IMO. It's almost like saying that you should be mixing on Airpods although frankly, airpods have more neutral sound. Without calibration, these headphones will cause you overdoing corrections and it's not balanced enough to mix. Luckily we have calibration even for free, so these things can be corrected. Extra sensitivity is of course welcome and build quality is fantastic. If not for the trashy earpads, I'd say they're built better than DT700.

Can I ask, what headphones are better for mixing for you? I know about monitors better headphones bad in mixing stuff but I just wanna know what a critique says the best headphones for mixing

@@Ayel-wl4ix For mixing you should look for open back models that are present in any calibration database, so that you can neutralize their character. Oratory1990 runs a free database, which is full of high quality headphones. Sonnarworks does the same but the service is paid. IF you want something that's neutral out of the box, without any EQ needed, then look at any headphones tuned close to Harman OE2018 target, which is Hifiman Ananda Nano, DCA E3, Audeze XC, Beyerdynamic DT880, DT900 prox and similar. I'd like you to notice though that there is a big difference between mixing and mastering. For mastering you want boosted highs, because they make your life easier. Hifiman Ananda Nano has a tasteful boost and that makes them very well averaged and suitable for both mixing and mastering. The available preset makes very little difference. DT700 prox is also decent IMO, and although it has slightly pushed forward midrange, none of it's features are broken like the highs and bass on DT770 proxle. I swear, Mr reviewer here talks like he didn't even bother to check on his recordings afterwards. You'll be overcutting highs and bass with these things. With DT700 prox you may not notice boominess on voice, which may be a problem but hopefully you'll catch it on speakers. Lastly the old DT770 pro, despite also being slightly V-shaped is still a more balanced model and proven to be useful, although more for mastering than mixing.

@@Ayel-wl4ix I can't see my comment so I'll assume it was deleted. In short better for mixing are: DT770 pro, DT700 prox with an asterisk (if a voice is boomy, you won't know this until you listen on speakers), DT880 pro, DT900 prox, Hifiman Ananda NAno, Audeze XC, DCA E3. The last two are crazy expensive but they are better for mixing than DT770proxle. This version resembles some Superlux headphones in it's balance. It has too little midrange to be a good mixing reference unless... You calibrate it. If you stick to EQ for mixing, you'll be doing reasonably well regardles of the model, with rare exceptions. But it has to be parametric EQ and the profile must be good, like Oratory1990. For mastering it's a different story. It depends what you're mastering, but for many things the proxle variant will make you overcopensate, so it may be a good idea to use a little bit of EQ on it for mastering too.

I forgot recent Sennheiser models, which are close to perfection in their balance - HD400 pro, HD560s and HD490 pro. You can mix on them without calibration and you'll see good results. I repeat - DT770 proxle ARE NOT reference headphones. Not by a long shot. You may like their sound, but as a monitoring device they suck big time and will cause you to overdo your edits, leaving your material lifeless and lacking in bass and detail.

This is a comparison of three headphones and I made a recommendation for most producers - which is actually the cheaper one. How does this make me a shill?

@@Mrslape may be, but Sennheiser has the most neutral an balanced sound I guess, what I have heard bymysef. Not because everyone is using the same gear means it is best. Headphones by Dr. Dre are overprized and not really good, JBL makes very bad speakers. Rokit is also bad. Well, it's also a question of type. Anyway, I wish this channel would be more critical and not hype every gear just to sell it by affiliate marketing.

Sennheiser is recycling drivers which is wierd , the new 490 pro unsung the 560s drivers adapted and the Neumann 30s are using them as well as Neumann is part of Sennheiser .. the 490s compared to the beyerdynamics also have a smaller driver

This headphones are too ugly and too sharp, not loud enough, I got THE SHURE SRH 840A and wow, reviewers out there are liars or have hearing problem. A little bright but in a nice way, which will save mix from ever getting too bright in other listening environments. Yes you need a few software to bring it to mastering grade monitoring system. Took me 7 months researching headphones, their are places to see and hear most headphones and you see why I choose this. Its a shame thus world mostly the worst things are the popular ones. Get this and thank me.
