I owned the Shure 440s for a few years, until they got smashed by a rogue personal sound mixer on stage, and now I own the HD280 Pros. Both are great options! To me, the 280s have a little more warmth, and as mentioned are INCREDIBLE for sound isolation. I do miss my 440s though. I loved how balanced everything felt within them- as someone who plays three instruments that was really special for me! Thanks for all your hard work - you're great!

Great video as always. Oh, and the MDR 7506 actually HAVE changed the packaging. They come in a white box. If anyone goes to Guitar Center (my job, lol) ask for the new box if you want. We’re still putting the old ones out first until they’re gone 😂

I've been using Sony MDR-7506 headphones for years and years -- I own three pair (but can only find two for some reason). They seem to be a studio standard in these parts, too -- almost every control room I walk into in the area seem to have them. Build quality and sound seem to be really consistent over the decades. And, they're fairly comfortable -- I can use them for hours and hours on end without fatigue. I have had to replace the ear cups, but they lasted about 10 years before having to do it.

I don't quite understand why EDM or bass thump production would make one go for headphones that emphasize bass. Would that not lead to a mix that has less bass if you compensate for what you hear?

I have had the AKG K52 headphones for almost 3 years now and have been blown away. The sound quality is excellent with a wide soundstage and flat frequency response and the build quality is decent. they are fairly lightweight but they are super durable. I recently got some Beyerdynamic DT 900 PRO X headphones and I can confidently say that the AKG's sound quality and comfort (although they do have a very different 'feel' on your head) are on par. Definitely recommend for $30.

If you looking some tests the AKG MK2 studio have the most "accurate" , "real" sounds reproduction of all without any drastic frequencies bumps . They are semiopen wich reflect in less bass frequency response compare to the others! My favourite budget headphones for listening to music and mixing . I guess it's matter of taste;)

I own both AKG240 and Shure headphones. If youre into vocal recording AKG240 is way better. They never bleed out in my setup. Semi open design allow to hear yourself better when performing, giving your flow the tightness it needs. Its true they dont have a lot of bass but one could argue that none of these headphones can mix bass properly anyway. Shure headphones is a no go if you move a lot when recording vocals as their components make a lot of "skweek skweek" sounds, so much that one can barely hear himself singing. Its true Shure headphones sound good, so good that it actually hides off a lot of flaws in your mix and that makes polishing your mix impossible. Shure headphones is better when DJing as you want to protect your ears from undesired noise when performing live all night long.

I own a K240 and the only things i want to mention, is that they do last long even if it feels a bit cheap (5 years ---> Little crack on the leather parts and cable tearing up a bit) and the lack of bass (Probably the soundwaves escape due to bad insolation). I'd recommend something else for bass music producers, but mixing feels really good with it.

my ATH-M20x's have worked well, but recently wearing them is less and less comfortable every day, and the left driver broke. now it rattles at certain frequencies, it's really unfortunate. i can't remember, i think i have used them for 6 years now. i am REALLY struggling to find a replacement, i use them for gaming, and since i am pretty certain in the quality of studio-level headphones in general, what's most important to me are quality, durability and comfort.

I use a pair of the Sennheisers at church to mix the audio for the live stream during services. The tight seal and high isolation is crucial to filter out what's going on in the auditorium vs. what's going out over the stream. Oh, and I found a pair of the Sony 7506 in the throwaway pile at work. $15 for new ear cushions from Amazon and they're good to go. I normally use the Sony MDR V150 (the headphone everyone loves to hate) at home and at work, mostly BECAUSE of the low isolation. I like to be able to hear what's going on in the room around me. The ones I really miss are a set of old Koss Pro4AA.

I have the Shure. I know headphones are important, but at the price point I am completely satisfied with the quality. I also use them for DJing and they’ve held up better than more expensive products I’ve used in the past. DJing can wreck headphones even when a DJ is purposefully careful. Fortunately these are perfect for all my uses in monitoring and tracking in the home studio. As for DJing in the modern world, preparing all your tracks with loops and cues limits the need for most headphone monitoring even with DVS. I’ve used them for recording my music over the past few years and I’ve tired using other headphones but I don’t know if I’m just use to the apples or what but nothing seemed to take their place. For recording in my opinion they just seem to give you that correct sound so when I record something and then take the song to the car like we all do and see how it sounds I find I need to make less corrections with the apples then other headphones idk that’s just my opinion, I also use an M-audio interface and an akg condenser Mic which I think akg makes an insanely good microphone for beginners and even for professional use. Sanjay C Do you think it is ever possible to mix and master on a pair of wired earbud headphones from sony or other brand?
@SanjayC

I never want to say "no." You should use whatever you have if you can't get something else. But I think even the $50 Audio Technicas from this list will be better in the long run.

I don't use headphones to mix, usually, relying on studio monitors instead. But I do like to check mastering in a variety of places and for headphones that meant my Sony MDR-1AM2 headphones that I use for recreational listening. But aware they have a slightly unusual frequency response (and it's annoying to go fetch them) I've just purchased an AT-30x for this purpose. It's just... I haven't used them yet! :-D I did reject the AT-50x headphones a few years ago for recreational listening (I didn't like the bass response). But mixing and mastering is a different endeavour.,

I bought the akgp52 like 6 months back and all I have to say is that its great for beginners Pretty good highs but the bass can be improved a little bit not being a big problem as they are still GREAT in sound COMFORT that AKG is known for.

Very informative review again - just I expect it from you, fellow! 🙂😉 I particularly like the frequency curves - please include them in every headphones and speaker review from now on. That would be great! I am just wondering why almost no reviwer from the US is including Supelux headphones (HD-660 Pro, HD-681 EVO, HD-662 EVO) from Taiwan when it comes to low-budget studio cans. Here in Germany they are quite popular.

I second the Superlux suggestion, the HD-681 Evo became my go to for everything except tracking as soon as I got them, over the ATH-M50X I was using before.

If you own a headphone for a year or longer, you will find that the crap leather or fake leather covering of the earpads will fall apart and the foam padding will decompose into foam dust. Those headphones with have cloth or nylon outer shell on the earpads are far less subject to early death and the foam pads underneath them are also more likely to last. The Sony headphone discussed is according to my own experience and many reviewers is an example of poorly done earpads which will fall apart.

I used the AKG 271 MKII closed ones for about 180€ about 12 years ago. But same as yours absolutly NO bass at all. And not very comfi after hours. I love the Feature that the sound goes automaticlly off when you take the headphones off. But i would never buy AKG again. My next one will cost a bit more...the DT900 Pro X...😜 At the moment im using the Superlux HD660 Pro for 49€...😁 Not that bad i have to say...i listened to more expensiv ones but they were crap compared to the Superlux. Im still learning with it because now i have more bass...not that much...but a bit more than flat. The overall sound is pretty nice for the price. Thinking about to get a second one...just in case. They are just good...👍

Thanks for your show/channel! I’m on the market for some new cans, studio grade. Would you kindly educate me (or do a show I guess) on mid range quality phones that are available out there? Maybe the $400-$1000 category? Not true wireless, rather something that has the versatility that I can plug in when I need to [play on an airplane if I am travelling] as well as Bluetooth capable. If you have time for this thank you very much.

I have both the Neumann NDH-20 and the Rode NTH-100 in my studio. The Rode are literally 30% the price of the Neumann, but I consider them equal in sound quality (even though they have different sound and response). Could not recommend the Rode NTH-100 more. Nothing at this price point even comes close.
