Beyer DT770 headphones have a known issue of having distortion show up them which is caused by hair getting into the speaker area and vibrating against the speaker membrane. The sound of this mimics a blown speaker and you'll think your headphones are history. This brief tutorial shows the parts disassembly and explains the simple cleaning procedure. According to the Beyerdynamic website, this cleaning will in most cases this will cure the problem.. It did in mine, and it's relatively quick to do, and free! Enjoy!

Yesterday without a reason, while i was listening music at a very low gain for 2 hours, suddenly they began to crackle like crazy on the right side. You know what i mean when you almost fall in depression, thinking your high quality and RECENT stuff breaks apart. Then i googled it, and saw people saying it was hair. Thanks to infos such as your video here, i could just solve the problem, and feel waaaay better now! Just to say, mine was full of my Jack Russel white hairs, and i could have spend 2 hours removing them. I just concentrated on the middle where the membrane is. Thank you very much!

Great tip, but some CAUTION is needed. 1. When you try to remove the speaker (after the glue dots no longer hold you back), be careful when it snaps off. When it finally came off, the force I applied made it spin in my hand and I accidentally dented the speaker cone. I was able to fix it by sucking the dent back in position with a straw. 2. Examine the speaker leads that goes from the terminals and in under the speaker cone so you really know what they look like. They look deceivingly similar to a hair strand. (I almost damaged mine, since I thought they were hairs.) 3. If you use tweezers that are made of metal, note that right behind the speaker cone is a quite strong magnet. So your tweezers can very suddenly be drawn towards the magnet and will risk damaging the speaker. 4. The surface of the speaker cone is sticky and gooey. My headphones were 12 years old when I did this repair. So the hairs that were stuck left a groove in the surface when they were removed. After a while it was hard to tell whether I was trying to remove a groove or an actual hair. I guess I would do better with a magnifying glass.

Thanks, this was an essential addition to the video. I also dented the speaker cone (thanks to the magnet and the tweezers) and was able to fix it with a straw. So nice to have my beautiful headphones working again!

And don't touch the membrane. I was removing those hairs with my fingers and apparently messed up the membrane on my DT990. Now they don't sound like they used to (awesome). Bass is weak, I'm so pissed. After further investigation it turns out that the magnet is covered with some gluey substance and if touch the center of membrane it will stick to the magnet and it's over. Even the vacuum cleaner could not suck it back.

About the deformed speaker cone: I was wondering if there could be long-term effects on the sound quality.. because my vacuum cleaner recently came too close to my pair of dt880s and they stopped working for about 10 minutes, until they suddenly started working again. So I suspect the same thing happened to me (just the other way around) and I'm not sure if this affected the accuracy of the sound. How did yours hold up afterwards?

This works, but be mindful on newer editions of the DT770 (I also have a newer DT990 that experienced this) there's way more glue, a method I found effective was getting a q-tip soaked in acetone, and lightly brushing the glue, this helps dissolve it. Then taking a thin metal spudger (soak that in acetone too), carefully wedge inbetween the housing and the driver, and pry apart. Then it'll come apart super easy. Don't be scared either guys! These thing's are pretty durable, and even after popping the driver out of shape and being a little rougher than I should have, it all came back together and sounds like brand new again :) Thanks yukka2 !!!!

It really worked. Had so much fear to destroy something, but it worked! Thanks for giving an overview of that not so complicated build up. To all others: Consider that your left earcup has 3 tiny little cable, what you can't see in this video, running into your driver additionally. Don't be afraid, you need to work around them.

Thank you!!! Just repaired my DT770 following this tut! No more distorted bass! I found out the speaker cone of the right driver was a bit deformed. I used a vacuum cleaner on low suction power to get the cone back in it's conical shape. Then I initially sucked it a bit too much forward soI used a hairdryer after to blow it all back in place. Funny how these everyday tools know make me have a decent sound again! Thanks miles for this vid

Thank you! Solved my high frequency distortion which just started yesterday. I used compressed air, which compressed the center. Used a small Mickey Mouse with a suction base to pop it back out. 4 year old DT770 works perfectly. Did not find any glue, just really tight clips holding the speaker in. Inserted the speaker slightly off rotation, but it stays perfectly and everything else mounted back correctly. Your post really helped.

WARNING for any others. My dumbass somehow snapped the cables. I tried to be very careful but the left side has some extra cables that are very flimsy. Thanks for your help though, because you were spot on. There were some hairs which were causing issues and I bet it would've fixed my distortion if it hadn't been for my clumsy hands.

Omg I think you just saved me from buying a new pair. I thought the bass cone had been shattered or whatever (probably old school speaker talk) but anyway - I decided to give it a go based on your instructions. While I didn't find any significant hairs (apart from one TINY curled one that was on the outer rim of the inner gel-like cone, I did remove some fibers of what looked like a frayed velcro tape or something but that was just on the inner shell of the housing which I doubt would have made a difference. At any rate, I did clean the sponge using a tape roller, and then used some canned air to clean out the rest (not aiming it at the actual gel speaker). Seems like it did the trick! You are a genius.

Have a limited edition black pair of DT990's and I can confidently say that the driver is a lot more secured on newer pairs than what's shown here. I couldn't manage to loosen the clips securing the driver so I used some compressed air on the back of it, then added some folded up TP (I'd use cotton but I didn't have any on hand) where the cotton ring is on the headphone shell, to give it some more cushion as I suspected maybe it was rattling on the shell/casing. Reassembled and no rattle, all works great!

On the recent model of 770 Pro 80 Ohm, the last part is not glued. I just fixed mine with bending the last part off with my fingers. I first used tool but it just dented the plastic. And, surprise - a hair had made it through all the layers of padding and woven materials. Picked it off, made sure it had no more hairs on it - and poof, problem fixed. It was a long time ago since I was this happy!

My DT770 and the DT990 Editions have the distortion straight from the box. I found that to avoid the distortion with these, I leave the bass setting on my amp to neutral. As soon as I turn the bass controller up, full distortion! They sound bassy enough without the boost, but it's still annoying. I expect more out of Beyerdynamics. The DT990 Editions drivers sit in a clamp washer which is very hard to remove without special tools.

If the driver build really stuck together, you could try to take compressed air or a strong hair dryer to blow some hair out. Mine was glued well and tabs were really hard, and I've read many people on here damaged their stuff. Instead of risking breaking it I blew some high pressure air through it and i could feel some dust or hair come out. May be a less invasive fix if you can't fully open it, and it might work, and less risky. I might've just moved the junk around, so don't know if its just a temporary fix.

Ben McDonald I have not had this issue, but as a suggestion, I would not wedge the screwdriver under the bottom of the speaker to pry it out, you might damage the soft part of the speaker. Try getting a small screwdriver blade under just the tab button and see if you can get a bit of lift there. Or wedge a small jewelers sized screwdriver in near one tab while trying to lift from another. Perhaps it's got some extra glue in there. If it is a glue issue, at you own risk, maybe try warming the tab areas gently with a hair dryer to soften it up? Good luck.

yukka2 I didn't know it was that simple to take the driver apart, I thought it was all one piece that didn't come apart. Before knowing any of that I used an electric dust cleaner (equivalent to a can of compressed air) to try to blow the hairs out of there. Which ended up smashing down the cone of the driver, but I didn't know that and thought I permanently damaged the driver. Thanks to your video, I was able to fix both of the issues. lol

It's unlikely, but it can't hurt to look.. This repair solves a distortion/ fuzziness problem only. If it was me, before I took them apart I'd first check the DAW meters and make sure it's output is sending equal signal to both sides. This might be easier with a sustaining sound like a bass or synth, then check your interface levels as well. If it's connected a headphone amp, maybe cycle the volume knob a number of times to overcome any scratchiness, resisitance. If you still think it the headphones, try listening from a different source; Ipad etc. if it's still off balanced, check the solder connectors on the headphone speakers. Make sure the wires have good connections. Also, if you wiggle the plug end of the cable and it gets better you probably need to replace the 1/4" plug. Let us all know if you identify the problem/ solve it. Good luck.

The new 770 versions their drivers are so fucking secure, that you'll break them before you get to open them.. Happened to me and never doing that again, basically wasted 150$. I got a new pair and the bass crackling came back... even when I added another layer of that foam in the hopes it would catch all the hair now... I might try your 'fix' before contacting them for a replacement... I rather not have my headphones gone for weeks before getting a replacement send over.. because my earplugs can't reach the PC from where I sit and I simply can't just move my PC closer to me lol.

Could i put the dt 990 ear cups on the dt 770?
@yukka2
@yukka2 7 жыл бұрын
They look similar, but I can't say personally because I don't own any 990's . Beyerdynamic does not list them as being the same. I did however find this in an Amazon review of the DT770 pads: "Also of note, just to satisfy my own curiosity I tried the pads on my DT990Pro-250's. The pads fit fine and were plenty comfortable but the sound was absolutely horrible. The fun natural smile frequency response of the 990's was replaced by an enormous wall of low-mid mud. Despite the fact that the pads look similar and fit without problem they are acoustically very different from the 990 pads. These pads are much stiffer and designed to complement the acoustic properties of the closed back 770's but will drastically and negatively alter the sound of the open back 880's or 990's which have much softer and less isolating pads. If you need to replace your 880 or 990 pads do not purchase these but instead get the EDT990V pads"

Could you help me disassemble Beyerdynamic DTX 501p? That is speakers themselves cloud.mail.ru/public/Didm/kxEzHQEST . There are no screws, so I don't know how to open them without damage. I've got no experience in such a business, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
