It's VERY easy to puncture the paper cover on the driver when prying off the retaining ring, as I found to my cost. It's vital to insert whatever tool you use as flat as possible to the driver. No-one in any of the strip down tutorials mentions this. Not disastrous but it creates a perfect entry point for hairs and other debris.

Interesting, so when you compare DT770 to any other closed back, the enlarged cup size is entirely irrelevant because it's essentially blocked off internally so the driver has about as much space as it would on something like an MD7506, M40X, HD280, etc. At this point, the larger cup is just to hold the pads whereas the 990s and 880s dampen the inside of the cups themselves. I've put velour pads on my DT770s and cut out the extra bass it produces and the sound is now way flatter and more balanced sounding, with good, clear mids. I'm wondering if I can get the same effect with an open earcup, and the kind of dampening they stick into a DT880. Hmm, I feel some experimental cup designs are going to make their way into my future.

Quick question, I have 3 pairs of DT770 PRO and all 3 of them have been carefully handled but on all 3 of them the LEFT ear piece just stopped working. All my other brands of headphone continued to work, I'm not sure if this is some flaw in the design or if my clients who put away the headphones sometimes wrap them too tightly but I always try and stop people from doing that because I always lightly coil them rather then tightly wrap them. Do you think if I open them up I should be looking to a specific area of the headphones or just replace the cable entering the headphones? Let me know what I should look at first. Your advice is greatly appreciated! You got a sub from me either way!
