A Silent Voice was the right movie at the wrong time. Released in the shadow of one of the biggest animated movies of our generation, it could have easily lingered there and faded into obscurity. It's a testament to the power of A Silent Voice that, two years later, it's such a beloved and celebrated movie. In this video I take a look at the tremendous highs and heartbreaking lows of a film that says so much with silence.
The video contains mild visual spoilers for A Silent Voice.

As a Young Adult who's also nearly deaf (hearing loss of 90-95% without hearing aids) i can say that this movie represents nearly my entire life. I also got bullied, but luckily i didn't got "damaged" (my english isn't pretty good) like shoko when shoya pulled out her hearing aid. I watched it just a few weeks ago for the first time and i can't believe what it did to me. This movie might be one of my favourite movies of all time, just because of the amazing story. I can only agree your words: This movie came to the wrong time. Of Course, shinkai's movie was great too, but Koe no Katachi could easily beat this movie if it came out to the right time (like this or last year). I really wish that there will be another Anime, exactly like this one (or maybe even A silent voice 2) Even if i cried on your name, this movie make me cry. every. time. every time i watch it again. i watch it around 11-12 times now and it's always beautiful. I think i said enough, because everything has been said in your video and in the other comments. I would like to know if there also people who are nearly deaf like me and have the same situation. if so, i would like to know :)

As a pianist, the music of the film always spoke to me. The style is quite special and very intimate, with pedal and other types of noises that would often not be present. It doesn't have a lot of recognizable or melodic music, but it's the perfect showcase of less is more, and how beautiful simple music can be, especially with all of this context. As for the film itself, you summed up everything I love about it brilliantly. The themes and how the characters represent them, speaks to me on a deep level that few stories ever have. Thank you for making this. It's something I'd like to show to everyone who has enjoyed the film, so it may help them further understand it, and why it's so special.

Yeah, when talking about this movie, people (mostly youtuber I watch) rarely talking about how the music is kinda muffled and you can hear the tapping noise and other noises that often removed in the mixing. And only when Shouya finally listen to his surrounding, the music become clear.

It doesn't matter how many video essays I watch about this movie... I always end up with watery eyes just remembering the movie. Although I've only seen it from start to finish twice, I've seen some scenes countless times. As you say, the movie does stumble in some ways, so I don't know if to consider it the best animated movie I've seen. But A Silent Voice is without a doubt "my" personal favorite animated movie. Ever. Naoko Yamada is indeed a force to be reckoned with. Great video, man. You're videos are always awesome :')

Nicolai Marquez i feel like the movie got the essence of the manga's story very well, it's just too much to cram 7 volumes into under 2 hours of movie. For example, the manga goes on after the school festival where the movie ends, showing what every character ends up doing, but it didn't add too much to the core story. So it's not that big of a deal (for me at least).
@nicolaimarquez2211
@nicolaimarquez2211 6 жыл бұрын
@@SephiMasamune Jeje, yeah, I haven't read it, but I've pretty much been hearing the same that you said here. I'm not actually diminishing the story with my comment. As a self-contained story, I feel it really succeeds in what it tries to do. I say it stumbles in like... They never really explain where did the dream of Shouko at the end (right before Shouja wakes up) came from, as I believe is like it was written by him in the diary and she got to read it and find out he also wanted to end with his life. And... well there's really not much else I can say... I guess that it's a bit confusing at first how Shouja survived the fall, and who got him out (though they do explain that at the end)? The thing is those are the kind of things that I believe might bother the most purist fans of the manga, but they really didn't bother me personally. Some things did made more sense the second time I watched it. But that's the thing, you just have to really pay attention. I really believe that precisely because it was 7 volumes into 2 hours the movie is incredibly concise in its themes and execution. And knowing that it continues beyond the movie's end, I actually thank they just left it there, as the story was about Shouya's journey to learning to forgive himself, and well... that's the end. And that's great. Just saying that objectively you could find some flaws, but even with the few flaws that I (think someone else) can count, I firmly believe this is a Masterpiece :)

Nicolai Marquez concerning who pulled Shouya out of the water, those were his elementary school friends, the two boys who jump into the river with him at the start of the film. As for the written note Shouko dreams about, did you notice how much Shouya was against her reading her old notebook? He didn't just want to protect her from the bad memories, he did actually write a suicide note in it (again, more deeply explained in the manga) and she did end up reading it. Which only added more fuel to the fire of Shouko blaiming herself for every bad thing that happened to her friends. Sigh... heavy stuff indeed...

I read the manga before the movie was announced. The movie is a different work of art, but I would rate them on the same level of masterpiece. Though the movie loses much of the manga's details and is less grounded, it makes up for it through it's subtle nuances that the manga does not have, these many nuances adding up over the course of the movie--a quick glance at another character, relaying anxiety or a small head movement to express discomfort--and it adds the depth to the characters that it would have missed within the short time frame that they had to work with. The nuances are especially connected and important to Shoya, where we unconsciously comprehend through his subtle twitches, shoulder movements, and loss of eye contact over and over again that we start to understand him much like you would start to understand a friend after spending enough time with them. It brings his character forefront and arguably gives an even deeper understanding of his character than the manga so that when the final scene where he unblocks the sound by "opening his ears" plays before our eyes, we fully understand why he is crying, why he is breaking down in the middle of a crowd in which no one else but us understands him. The moment brings us closer to him on a personal level simply because we are the only ones that understand him in that moment. Awesome movie.

This film touches me so very very deeply. I am deaf too and was bullied many times in school. I was lucky in that I had my twin sister who is normal protected me. If I did not have her I would have killed myself thinking I was just a freak that did not deserve to be alive.People like us can not hear but we have a heart just like anybody else. We fall in love and have heartaches just like everyone. We have big dreams and want to be somebody important one day just like everyone. One of the girls that bullied me is now my friend actually. She admitted that she was scared of me being different and that changed how I felt towards her. I felt pity that she suffered thru fear and did not know how to over come it except to bully me. Now she can speak sign and we have over come our personal fears of each other to both become better people. I know that it is easy to hate the bully but that is such a waste. It is so much better when we reach out to each other and find we are really not a bit different inside at all.

I like to listen to the soundtrack to this film a lot as much as it breaks me to and a small thing I noticed is that in the songs, they kept in this small day to day sounds that those of us who aren’t deaf hear but dont pay attention to- things like random clacking of things, creaks, taps, things you might hear while in class when no one is talking- and I think this made me so much more grateful for my ability to hear...it really made me think “these are things I get to hear all the time- I have the privilege of being able to listen to these small noises that are a part of my life..what would it be like if I couldn’t?” And I think knowing these things after rewatching the film added a whole new level of my ability to empathize with Shoko- understanding and hearing the noises that she can’t hear that I don’t notice added a new depth to her for me...it’s just a small thing I noticed about this film and it’s soundtrack that I think about sometimes and I felt like sharing it :)

There's a scene at the beginning of the movie, during the "My Generation" theme intro, where Shoya is entering his mother's salon and we can see Shouko sitting while waiting to cut her hair. She has leaves on her hair and bruises, probably from bullying for her previous school. I find this scene important because, to Shouko, the same thing is happening again in the new school, so, to her, she is the cause of these problems. Differently from the first bullying, this time Shoya is trying to fix what he has damaged in the past, but to Shouko, it's him trying to fix a problem that she causes. In the end, everybody in the movie is having a hard time forgiving themselves, but by helping each other, they somewhat manage to do so.

God, this movie hurt so well. Even "rewatching" the movie through the clips in the video is flooding me with the painful emotions from my first viewing from only a month ago (to the day, lmao).

My friend recommended this movie to me and I said I’ll watch it the next day. I never did and forgot it about until a little while in the middle of November and I have to say, A Silent Voice almost made me cry but the tough boy me was barely able to hold it in.

Another anime on my list because of you now, my free time plumits every time I visit this channel. As a relatively new fan of anime ( I only started sporadically watching in 2015 and then properly devouring content halfway through 2016) I can't tell you enough how much your channel has pointed me in the right direction, not just for what to watch but in attitude. You always speak with a genuine affection for the work you're talking about and it is so refreshing when compared against other essayists on this site who often tend towards the populism of "I FUCKING HATE THIS SHOW IT SUCKS ! DID YOU SEE BESERK 2016/SAO/ *INSERT CORPORATE SHILL ANIME HERE*." Where other channels teach people about what anime to hate you teach which anime to love. And I am far more excited for the berserk video than the no name one.

i just watched this video for the first time in 8 months and it really took me back to my 2016th birthday when i first watched it and to this day i still remember it , and when i got i new phone this year it instantly took me back to we're i first watched it 😂 idk why it took me back to we're i first watched it maybe i was more mature now and i can relate now ,i said this to my friends and they said the same thing. i showed the anime to my family this to my family while in covid and then they cryed maybe it really is the atmosphere and the relatability and the way it portrays the story i thought !!!, it really shows how anime can be more than just a story . btw when i was typing this down i cried non stop i really felt that anime fan feeling we're you really love how the story ends and and and...............ahhhh.......... the satisfaction when you get when you show your real emotions is just .....ahhhhhh........ it really makes your heart feel warm and fuzzy i wish i was one of the characters so i can see how the story continues 😌 i wish i get my moment someday !!! took me 1and a half to right this down haha i even fergot some of the things i was going to type but i guess my emotions really took me for how "koe no katachi" really affected my life and how i live now ever since i watched that movie i really took the time to make people feel happy and respect people for who they are and overall feel wanted in life, thats my affect on life anyway.😁😁😁 bye lol that really made me smile for a little while i think think anime is a vary good place to inject positivity into people who need it.😄

This is one of the best movies i've seen, ever. I was looking foward to it before it premiered, but kept putting away and only got around to watching it in early 2018. And oh boy i wasn't prepared for the amount of emotional weight it throws at us. It was about some good 2 weeks before i could get it out of my head. Im not going to list all the reasons why this film is a masterpiece, there's plenty of people and videos out there doing just that, but ill just say that the overarching themes of redemption and forgiveness is something that can speak to people's hearts universally regardless of cultural or social background. Truly, such a beautiful masterpiece.

I showed this to a friend who is deaf, he was amazed by how different Japanese Sign Language. I use ASL and admire the deaf community for showing they are strong even as other don't understand. I am LD (learning disabled) and I hate it when people see my disability and not see me. It has been a pain for years. My bullies actually have tried to make what they did was a crime. I showed this to my former bully this movie and it made him cry and said he finally understood what he did wrong and was sorry

One day, in the middle of January of 2018, I decided to not do any studying and I had an epic animeathon. I watched the following movies all for the first time during this amazing day that I will never forget. A Silent Voice, Your Name, 5 cm/s, The Girl Who Lept Through Time, 2 episodes of One Piece, Voices From A Distant Star and When Marnie Was There. I legit cried, multiple times.

I was in special ed and I hated every minute I was there. The fact I learned ASL I found out how amazing it was. The deaf culture for me was an escape at times. I loved the fact these people overlooked my LD and it was so nice. This movie explored more than being deaf and having tormentors that it shows friendship is more important than a disability

"... A Silent Voice, or Koe no Katachi, was the right movie at the wrong time...", indeed it was in the context of the video and I like how it was put. But just to play on those words a bit.. To me it was the right movie at the very damn right time, and it will forever remind me of the many things I'd been through when it was released. A Silent Voice is my favorite anime movie, and this video just made me love it even more.
