How To Make Spent Shells [Miniature Modelling Masterclass]

The first in a new series on miniature modelling, covering an array of scratch building techniques. In this video I show you how to make spent ammo shells/casings to bring your models and bases to life. The example I show covers the Heavy Stubber for 40k but you can use this method for any caliber shell or tabletop gaming system.

You can also use wire end sleeves, these little ferrules that are crimped onto electrical wires, they're already hollow and perfectly identical. Or cut the stems of cotton swabs, many are hollow as well. Just seal one end with a dab of glue or some putty or something.

I think cotton swabs would be a little too large, but probably suitable for larger calibre rounds. I'll have a look into ferrules.

pre-cutting the groove for the casing before cutting the length seemed to help. Lot easier control to cut it.

I both love and hate this video. First off great tutorial! The bad thing is that this is supper labor intensive and I was hoping to put 2-3 shells on about 100 space marine bases

I'm afraid is it. There's a few ways to speed it up and there's some great tips in the comments. You can score the grooves before you cut which is easier to handle, and make a little L shaped rig out of plasticard which allows you to cut the rod to the same length each time. Alternatively there are shops which sell casts of shells or moulds which allow you to make your own on mass which might be more useful for the sheer volume you need.

Why not just stretch your own sprue? Free.

@@MyXyle666 Take old piece of sprue / frame, melt the plastic with a lighter without actually melting it, evenly and rather slowly all around the middle of the part of old sprue to be stretched... Swiftly pull apart to desired diameter and length.
