38:10 LOL, no. We Western Europeans were grateful for what the US did in WW2, but any notion of you saving the world went out the window with Vietnam, even if we rightly considered the USSR to be the far worse alternative while it lasted. If anything, if it weren't for Trump showing us the folly of unwavering trust in you, Putin's invasion of Ukraine made us appreciate the presence of US troops for the first time in decades. We like/love your pop culture and let you strongarm us (politically and socially) into a less severe take on your disastrous War on Drugs, but we mock/hate your XXX puritanism, jingoism, and American exceptionalism overall. Conversely, Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia have plenty of reasons to detest US intervention. And the one time the US got bigly involved in Subsaharan Africa ended in disaster.

Superman and captain America were never a representation of America or its values thats why they stood out against other heroes and villians. People doing good for the sake of good regardless of political power/influence or financial gain is not an American quality. Thats why they stood out....that was the point. The americans we want to represent us. Not the american representation we have.

I don’t care for captain America but Superman was literally created by two Jewish immigrants making a hero for everyone and since his conception he was truth- justice- and the American way….. sooo what are you talking about ….. Superman before 2005 represented America and its values for decades to the point presidents acknowledged it and the rest of the world respected it. Not until the 2010’s did we see a shift with Superman being a “world hero” and he’s suffered by that change greatly. Funny how two straight white farmers in Kansas find him and raise him but he’s not AMERICAN….

I'm British, and I don't know a single British person that sees America as a "beacon of light" quite the opposite and I think that's part of the appeal of the Steve Rogers era of Captain America. American ideals ARE something we can see from other countries as good things. I think the problem Sam Wilson has as captain America is that pretty much every fan liked him as falcon, there has been no good reason he couldn't have stayed as falcon and done the exact same things. I get he was cap in the comics but it just didn't work in falcon and winter soldier so I we are starting on a really bad foot. I guarantee that if he had stayed falcon and this was the falcon movie 1 instead of captain America 4 the buzz would be better. And THEN to say he doesn't stand for America makes it even more pointless.

That’s the issue with a lot of Americans. They deify the country which stunts its growth. It’s great being a patriot but the US is not the poster child of morality and if they want it to be they need to admit it’s run by billionaires who gas light social issues to keep the citizens divided. Steve Rodgers didn’t trade his morals to remain patriotic.

Captain America is the embodiment of patriotism and the American spirit. Growing up, my brother read so many Captain America comics, so much so that his love for the character became one of his inspirations to become a proud service member. Anthony Mackie is certainly entitled to his beliefs and opinions, but as a professional and businessman, one has to wonder what was going through his mind when making such bold statements, especially during a very sensitive time for both the country and the MCU brand.

Mackie is saying, if a man can watch Barbie and find something of himself in that film, so should an Italian be able to find something of themselves in a Captain “America” movie. The audience shouldn’t have to be a one for one match with the character to be able to relate.

Great. But Avengers Endgame was the 2nd biggest movie of the Italian box office in 2019. Italians don't need to be convinced they like Marvel characters - although the MCU arguably hasn't made a decent movie since 2019, but that has nothing to do with Marvel characters not being relatable and everything to do with bad writing and hubris.

A lot of cope, Grace. Endgame was an international hit. You don’t need to ‘sell’ Cap to an international audience by downplaying “America”. Also, it’s true that most people are sick of the billionaires - but the *globalists & their NGOs* are what is being rejected, not nations, or the identity and culture of those nations. @sandal_thong right, his humility and the fact that he liked me and most people really look up to Steve Rogers he thought the shield should be in a museum. Even though he was an avenger and Steve Rogers friend. The government instead of putting the shield in a museum got another guy to dress up in the red white and blue and gave him the shield. Sam served in the military show humility was a good friend trusted his government and was not treated fairly. I personally prefer Steve Rogers as Captain America but I don't think my opinion should override his opinion. Just like the government took the shield from Sam and gave it to a white guy there are those in this country who want to ridicule sams opinion because he's black. It really doesn’t matter what Anthony Mackie truly meant with his statement. He gave the more “toxic” groups on the internet enough fuel to twist his words into whatever they want and that’s the last thing his film or we as fans need right now. Captain America 4 just needs to be at least moderately successful and his comments do not help in achieving that whatsoever 😂.

What Anthony Mackie said wasn’t worded in the best way, but I get what he was trying to say. And some of the reactions are telling and show that people really don’t get Captain America at all. Captain America is not an embodiment of America as it stands - Homelander is more that. I’d even say that Tony Stark is closer to a representation and embodiment of America than Captain America is, and look how Steve and Tony clashed. Captain America is an ideal and a representation of hope and the American dream - similar to Superman. The reaction to Anthony Mackie’s comments highlights something which is very real for the character of Captain America - everybody has their own idea of who he should be and is supposed to be, and project that onto him. And then there is who he ACTUALLY is. But given where America is and how media literacy is in the toilet, it’s no surprise that people are being obtuse about Mackie’s statements, as though there isn’t truth to what he said. He was very correct in his sentiment. Captain America and The Winter Soldier even touched on it.

It's always Americans living IN America benefiting from America, hating America. Its okay to be proud of the country you clearly prefer while still being critical of its flaws. There's no need to deconstruct or change a character like Superman or Captain America. People should let them be what they are: to represent an idealized version of what America should aspire to be, not change them to fit a different narrative because you hate America. If he doesn't represent an idealized version of what America should be and is instead trying to be more gloabalist, then he's not Captain AMERICA. He's Captain World or Captain Planet or whatever. Leave the character's as they were. Also good luck with making a political comment like that in this climate and having an unsuccessful as a result.

Captain AMERiCA, it's in the name, he has an A on his head. Anthony Mackie maybe doesnt know who he is playing. Captain America's civilian identity is Steven "Steve" Rogers, a frail man enhanced to the peak of human physical perfection by an experimental "super-soldier serum" after joining the United States Army to aid the country's efforts in World War II. Equipped with an American flag-inspired costume and a virtually indestructible shield, Captain America and his sidekick Bucky Barnes clashed frequently with the villainous Red Skull and other members of the Axis powers. KEY WORD AMERICA.

I think you've completely misread the rise in popularity of Captain America through the 2010s Grace. We were in a post GFC climate, there was a growing discontent among the working class that manifested in a lot of different ways. For people on the right side of the political spectrum, Captain America was seen as representing the founding ideals of the nation in a pure way that existed before it was corrupted by greed and cronyism. For people on the right, Cap fighting back against the social/corporate/government elites wasn't a rejection of american nationalism, quite the opposite. It represented a pure and more traditional form of that nationalism (what the USA used to stand for) rising up to reject the corruption and excess of the new world order.
