I'm going to respectfully disagree on one point. The movie is about abusive relationships overall, not just toward women. Beetlejuice himself was set up by his wife, who poisoned him. Astrid's father could not endure Lydia's traumas as she unintentionally sucked the joy out of him until he went to the Amazon rainforest. And I do believe it is implied that because he is a civil servant, he did jump in. My point is that if you look closer, a lot of guys got it also, but just like in real life, it's worse and more common for women.
@mechasentai3 ай бұрын
I saw the movie again and Lidia says "recently I've been seeing him again." So its implies he has not been tormenting her for 30 plus years. It's a recent thing. And also even Deelia's husband also dies the exact same way as Lidia's husband to me implies both men just wanted to get away, and it drove them in one way or another to their doom.

Don't forget about Charles. I believe Deila controlled him and that house...he had no say in anything. He embraced his wife's passion for art; didnt push back on Delia redsigining the entire house in her taste...in addition to help sell her art with Maxie Dean in part 1. Delia didn't care for his birds hobby. Maybe that's why he went to jungle on his own.

Great points. There absolutely were problematic women (as well as men) in this movie. Unfortunately a lot of feminists boil the world down to "men are the problem", so all the men in a movie like this get tarred with the same abusive brush, while all the abusive women get a free pass. The disproportionate vilification of men needs to stop.

But there's no indication that Lydia has been traumatised by or is even aware that Beetlejuice has been stalking her for that long. Its said explicitedly that shes only started to see him pop up recently, and that she just occasionally felt his presence before that, but not in a way that effected her life. She clearly spent many happy years in that house with the Maitlands, she was very happy with Astrid's father and with them all as a family. A fun, beautiful mess-couldn’t agree more. Loved the first one and had a fun time at the theater, but from a writing standpoint, this movie had way too many plot lines that ended strangely. Burton said himself this is a movie about women of three generations, and when you add in trauma and unhappiness, and then have other characters resolve it, it can leave a bad taste in a viewer’s mouth. Both Astrid and Lydia were rather passive characters in their specific storylines (having their issues solved by Beetlejuice), which does not close off their story arcs well. The last scene of the movie implies Lydia will spend the rest of her days alone, haunted by a Beetlejuice. Not the happiest ending, and this is coming from someone who will probably go see it again in theaters.

I must confess that I think you overthought or looked too into the movie’s breezier moments that come and go! It was the most fun I’ve had going to the movies all year! Possibly the biggest FUN in years!!! The irreverence with the baby felt on brand with Beetlejuice’s fun villainy within their world of whimsy & evil fun stuff Plus it was a fantasy/dream sequence/tricking both times!!! My theater was laughing out loud and gasping with disgust at the same time during those moments!!! I think having Jeffrey Jones’s character top half bitten off by a shark was the ULTIMATE clapback and commentary on the bad stuff the actor has done while still safeguarding the realness and the integrity of fleshing out the other characters!!! It gave Delia so much more depth emotionally and made her character go through a whole arc that felt grounded in reality, despite the whimsy/uncanny valley of the world!!! As someone who didn’t know neither about the actor’s bad deeds nor about the existence of the animated show…prior to watching this sequel….which I’m grateful for… Neither of those two things you mentioned why it took you out of the movie, had that effect on me at all!!!! It plays as an immersive world/characters expanding story through and through!!! This movie was HILARIOUS with so so many audio/visual gags and outrageously funny bits/jokes while still feeling dark and spooky with all the uncanny vibes intact!!! Perfect balance and mix of both those elements!!! Literally had SO MUCH FUN!!! Unexpectedly surprising with a few effective twists!!! Everything from the first movie felt expanded upon and tightly packed with an extra punch in this one thanks to Tim’s seasoned experience as a director as well as the cast being seasoned themselves in these roles!!! The dynamics between the characters had a lot range and you see them interact and go through multiple emotional cues with one another that by the end, I felt a certain type of KATHARSIS that is overall lacking in film, these days!!!! It was a true adventure epic of going to the Underworld with a lot of pathos!!! The characters went through a LOT during the film’s run! That final hug and resolution during Delia’s send off was very healing and emotional!!! A mainstream film like this, which addresses themes of DEATH, Grief & the afterlife & the dead communing with the living, in such a lighthearted, whimsy way that still feel rooted in emotional maturity…felt so earned and healing to witness!!! Again very rare to have those Hades/Persephone/Eleusinian Mysteries themes in storytelling! I appreciated them so deeply and whole heartedly!!!

I'm feeling a little embarrassed by listening to some of all this complaining :/ I genuinely liked this movie and I had one hell of a time at the theater watching it. William Dafoe was also great, Bob was great (R.I.P. Bob) the music was excellent. I honestly loved this movie.

Why are these critics not ever taken seriously? They always overthink everything, gotta be ve PC, bring politics into it, and they can't ever just have fun and be entertained. Meanwhile blindly prause every MCU film. Entertainment has gone downhill because of them

I agree, I don't even think Grace believes what she's saying but Grace is playing a character.

I liked this movie just for the simple fact I got what was sold to me. All the scenes in the trailers are in the movie, including songs used in the trailers are in the movie not just in the credits or not at all like most movies. It felt like what I think a Beatlejuice sequel would feel like. A few too many story lines going on but I thought they tied them together nicely. :) I had a good time.

Grace grace grace grace...Beetlejuice is the villian of the story. Thats what he does! Sure we love watching him but that doesn't mean we're expecting happily ever after at the end. The only complaint that i have is the cop being useless(too good of an actor to waste) and the story line about Beetlejuice's ex wife. If anything she was the one who was doing the stalking the entire movie! This is totally different from the cartoon. It might not have been the best but we all still enjoyed it. No wonder Hollywood and producers can't come up with anything orginial anymore...waaaay too much criticism nowadays.

Listening to Grace and her misinformation will destroy your standards in movies she’s clueless and she’s never accomplished anything in her life.

It felt as if there was one too many storylines. I think they could have just killed off the dad at the beginning and be done.

I think beetlejuice harassing Lydia is perfect because that’s what demons do. They don’t care about the host. He latched onto Lydia and doesn’t want to let go. Lydia did step up a little bit when she summoned him back to the afterlife but I would like to see a proper face off between them two for the 3rd movie.

I *think* the whole baby BeetleJuice thing was a bit of a mock of the whole babify characters that’ve become trendy lately since Baby Yoda/Grogu and making fun of that whole trend in a sense

Leave it to grace to use every word in the book to substitute the word hunting. As in what a Ghost is suppose to be doing. Hunting the living and not making it easy for them.

Is Grace really making a big deal about a demon tormenting Lydia. That is the point, she is being tormented by this demon Beetlejuice and has to break this torment or haunting. Grace is trying to compare this to real life stalking, Grace may have a little PTSD. Sorry to hear that in your analyses, but don't force people to view this movie through your emotions. This means ALL haunted and possession moves have dead people who are stalking the living.

7:50 “Im not sure why Beetlejuice was obsessed with Lydia” It’s because he wanted to marry her to get back in to the living world as a condition if he got rid of the Deetz’s Can this woman not remember the reason of the first one?

So if a films antagonist is "harassing" the protagonist and said protagonist tells the antagonist to stop and they don't stop, that's problematic because it's 2024? What a childish take. I just keep shaking my head in disgust. I'm happy there are still some filmmakers that ignore the cries of these mentally crippled man-babies.

Grace did you catch that in the Transylvania dream sequence they were shooting it with the dream sequence score and slo mo that Brian DePalma used in Carrie! A little homage right at the end much like Carrie's dream sequence ending.

Can’t help but think that there’s going to be yet another sequel. After all, you have to say Beetlejuice three times: Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
