Members of M Company 42 Commando Royal Marines partner with allies from the United States Marine Corps (USMC) 22 Marine Expeditionary Unit to practice rescuing downed pilots in a process known as Joint Personnel Recovery, JPR, or Tactical Recovery of Aircraft Personnel, TRAP, if you are from the US Forces. Operating from USS Arlington, a US Navy Transport Ship, the Marines experienced the extreme conditions in the Arctic region, Keflavík Airbase in Iceland, on Exercise Spring Viking.
Pilots, like those who would aboard, Aircraft Carried R09, HMS Prince of Wales, that was docked in Reykjavík could need recovering for many reasons, being shot down behind enemy lines is one, but the reason could just as easily be having a technical problem and crashing in a remote area. Regardless of the reason the Marines, onboard ship, need to respond to any situation and be able to deal with whatever conditions they find on the ground.
BFBS Creative, with former Royal Marine Ben Cook, follow NATO members from the Royal Marines and United States Marine Corp, as they work together to conduct a pilot rescue mission before embarking on CH-53E Super Stallion Helicopters and LCAC Hovercraft for a classic maritime raiding mission.

Getting settled in for Supremacist suppression from the north East is an adrenaline rush. In months they'll be ready to take on the next phase and be optimized for artic hostility created by the war against Ukraine.. World's best military is getting better at co-op and support worldwide on a low-key Elite level. This is a sneak reveal for the opposition. Beware of the Western alliance! 🇺🇸💪🏽🚀

Of note here was the US Marines here were all using suppressors & high powered optics on their assault rifles (the exception were those with M240 LMG's). Think a very wise move for suppressors allows for better communication (& situational awareness by retaining one's hearing) in combat, improves accuracy & also helps reduce troops firing signature (harder for the enemy to know where counter fire is coming from). The improved optics allows for better accuracy at longer ranges and move from spray & pray to targeting with single fire helps (drastically) to conserve ammunition.

Fantastic video.. Watching the two us and UK marines working so well together.. What I like to know is how does the chain of command work? Who takes orders from whom? Because each unit has its own chain of command... I'm sure it's been worked out.. Cus thay work so well together.
@darrencoventry6788
@darrencoventry6788 Жыл бұрын
When units are working together like this, especially on live operations, there are very clear rules on command and rules of engagement. There are vast differences in the UK and US rules of engagement, so legally this is quite an important topic. Command and control ranges from Full Command, so the gaining commander, in this case it would be the CO of 22 MEU, has full authority to treat the Royal Marines like his own Marines (note that ROE would not be changed and never is for UK Armed Forces). There are then various levels of Operational Command OPCOM, Operational Control OPCON, Tactical Command TACOM and finally Tactical Control TACON. All of this would be outlined in any issued orders and legal agreements before the units are detached/attached.

Given how the Arctic region is slowly opening up to more ship traffic, Canada needs a bigger presence in it's Arctic backyard in case of a shipping disaster or large airliner crash. Canada has been incredibly lucky that no such emergency has unfolded in it's backyard. Canada lacks emergency infrastructure to deal with a large scale arctic catastrophe should it unfold. I would hate to think how Canada would handle a crashed airliner in Baffin Island or a foreign super tanker leaking oil in the Canadian North West Passage.

I'm usually critical of "Joint Training" with other nations as the chances of many of these nations actually performing combat operations with US forces is slim or nil. Joint training with UK and Scandinavian in Arctic conditions is one exception. The US Marines really have the mission for Arctic warfare, though the Army is trying to get up to speed. Scandinavia is a likely target should Russia decides to get "froggy". Training with the Royal Marines is never a waste of time, nor is training with any of the Scandinavian Special Operations units.

I was in Iceland last year as a tourist. I was told that many of the landscape would not grow back in hundreds of years if humans ever damaged it. I suppose that’s what the military is doing. I understand they want to have a common defense, but destructing environmental ecosystems should not be an exception.
@charliecharliewhiskey9403
@charliecharliewhiskey9403 Жыл бұрын
1) "much" isn't "all", and there are plenty of places in Iceland which that doesn't apply to 2) The UK and US militaries will have had to get agreement from Iceland, and that agreement will have been subject to risk assessments, including environmental and ecological assessments. 3) There will have also either been an opportunity for special interest groups to have a say, OR it will be a place which has been used for military exercises regularly for the past 60 odd years, because that's how militaries do things; it benefits exercise staff to reuse the same exercise field again and again since they know the safety requirements and logistics and can focus on training the guys. The point I'm making is that this won't be causing substantial or excess harm to the natural environment, and so there is no need to worry about that. Despite the visual impact of military training, and despite the horrors that war can bring to lives and the landscape, during peacetime in an allied country the military is in all likelihood one of the *least* harmful organisations to the environment.

@drinksnapple8997

Not even close. Keep dreaming. The USMC is pretty much HEAVY "Shock" naval infantry (they bring with them massive amounts of firepower). Meanwhile, the RM's are on par with the US 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division. Fast, lightly-armed, very very quick-hitting, but with a short term engagement capability. To put it bluntly, the Royal Marines are more akin to a raider force. Better at "raiding" than the USMC, that's for sure. But the RM's on one of the three "Commando" units (40, 42, 45), have with absolutely nothing in common with the USN SEAL Teams. Nothing in common. Not in the same team, not in the same league, not in the same universe.

What the hell has this got to do with climate change?
@abulebube1239
@abulebube1239 Жыл бұрын
The ice in the Arctic is melting more and more and there’s a real possibility that new sea routes will open up in the region on a few years, and consequently this has drawn some interest to the arctic circle, specially Iceland and Norway. Another factor in this is that Russia is becoming more agressive as a whole and it has flexed its muscles in the region before, so it could be that they are saying climate change instead of saying that this a exercise to prepare for Russian incursions into the area (less politically charged).
@Dezzasheep

@JG-ib7xk
@JG-ib7xk Жыл бұрын
Wow.... you really are dumb if you're even asking this question. You could get the answer by thinking for 30 seconds. Why would the ice melting affect global politics, and therefore affect the military's of the nations on that area? If the ice melts then suddenly there are a lot of new shipping lanes where there are currently none. The country that controls those shipping lanes will make a lot of money. So countries will be willing to fight over control of those shipping. So countries need to start preparing their militaries for this possibility.
@abulebube1239
@abulebube1239 Жыл бұрын
@@Dezzasheep To be fair, while polar bears aren’t dying out they are experiencing at least some loss of habitat specially in their southern most ranges. Honestly even the climate change “excuse” ties back to Russia. Assuming those sea routes would open, the biggest concern is that it would represent a new area of strategic importance and Russia might attempt to stake their claim on it.
