yeah eproms are a good one to practice on before trying this on a rare custom. or a few dead ICs

The way i did some eprom chips like this was : I first put the chip on a socket ,then i inserted the legs and soldered them on the chip and in the socket. and then i put the socket inside a socket on the pcb. It gets a bit higher than the other chips but if space is not a problem then it is way more supported and also can be removed more easily in the future

yeah I did think about doing sth like that since I was going to put the ic on a socket. there's a couple of articles online describing how to do it but a mate ended up sending me the adapter so why not use it. think the adapter is about the same height using that two sockets solution

haha yeah and a hammer to straighten legs. I'm just surprised they're still all working
