Persian was official language of the mughal India and was used as a language of courts and official matters of that time. it was like English of that time. Imagine how a marathi ruler would have conversation with a tamil,gujrati or rajasthani ruler? Shivaji mahraj's letters from that time are available as historical records,so many of them are in persian and others in highly persianised marathi. Shiavji maharaj used to address his people as Raiyat which is another word for praja in persian. his kingdom was called HINDVI swarajya, hindvi means indian in persian. shivaji maharaj was called Padshah by his Raiyat,padhshah is another word for Badshah and shaah means emperor in persian.
