I have been waterfowl and turkey hunting with my muzzleloaders 10 and 12 gauges for a lot of years and I can tell you that patterning is important, but it doesn’t stop there. When you are deciding on powder charge you better consider down range foot pounds of energy if you expect to clean kill your game. Consider steel or aluminum sheeting (like siding) as a test target at your planned ranges. Ballistic jell is also good but expensive. You can generally find the old siding samples at you local dump. Much cheaper and watching penetration and denting will determine the penetration capacity of your loads.

Some thoughts on shot loads,just to tighten the pattern for turkey hunting applications.Would an appropriate gauge modern plastic wad tighten the pattern?What about wrapping a pre-measured shot charge in cloth?
@BlackPowderTV4 жыл бұрын
Vtmtnman42 Hey. A plastic shot cup? It would, but as I try to stay historically correct for the period of the gun, depending on the gun, I use cups made of paper, like a paper cartridge but open topped. The cloth may work too. The problem is if it’s not open and it doesn’t tear away as it comes out there is a high probability it will stay together and “slug” the target. Lots of things to try out and sometimes it’s the unusual that works the best. Thanks!
@Boozie5133 жыл бұрын
I was surprised by the shot pattern with the 100 grain test. Waiting for things to dry out so I can test some turkey loads in my .62 Fusil. Going to try #6 shot, having a hard time finding #5.

I did a video on making paper shot cartridges and I showed some test targets shot beforehand and the difference 5 grains made was crazy. 60-65 grains, nice, dense pattern. 70-75 grains and blown pattern. 80-85gr pattern was almost nonexistent (and the 80 grain load had a double thickness wad!)
@BlackPowderTV4 жыл бұрын
It’s amazing what every variable can do to change a good load to a bad one. Thanks!

Noticed the same thing with mine. Had to get north of 80 to get the holes to disappear. I can get good coverage enough for turkey or rabbit out to 30 yards with 1.5oz of shot over 100 grains of ffg. im still playing with it. I did try 110, but no noticeable difference worth talking about over 10 shots. Nice video boss. Looks like your kind of enjoying it.

Can you do this with a rifled barrel? And when you went from 60-100 did you add more shot or did to remain the same?
@BlackPowderTV4 жыл бұрын
No shot in a rifled barrel. You'll fill the rifling with lead. Same amount of shot but it can be adjusted within safe parameters which would be about 7/8 oz to 1 3/4 ounce in a 20 gauge.
@billy_h_bonney20974 жыл бұрын
I just aquired a 10 gauge pedersolli double barrel. I was curious how much 2f / #7 shot you would recommend I try for hunting a South Carolina dove field. I have a hunt this saturday but I won't have time to pattern my gun until the hunt. :(
@BlackPowderTV4 жыл бұрын
Hey Billy, hard to say, but perhaps something like 70g Goex and an ounce and a half of #7? Every gun is different but I'd go with something like that in a pinch...
@billy_h_bonney20974 жыл бұрын
@@BlackPowderTV Thank you that is what I have, I just want to hit the dove hard enough to knock them down if I connect but I don't want to overload the shot. the guy who had it before me had it set at 1 1/4 oz for shot.
@BlackPowderTV4 жыл бұрын
1 1/4oz should work fine. To be more clear I'd use the powder, then either a lubed nitro card or three over shot cards, then the shot, then one overshot card. If you don't use a lubed nitro card expect to have to clean with a wet patch really quickly between every 3-4 shots per barrel....
@billy_h_bonney20974 жыл бұрын
@@BlackPowderTV sounds great!! I have all that, but do you mind recommending a source for in the future? The Shotgun came with a loaded possible bag, and lots of nitro pads and cards. even came with 2 plastic wads, which I don't plan on using unless someone can tell me why it would be a good idea.
@BlackPowderTV4 жыл бұрын
billy_h_bonney Yea, leave the plastic for modern stuff. You don’t want that melted into your traditional barrel. Look at trackofthewolf.com. That’s were I order all my BP stuff. They should have everything you need. 👍🏻

I have a 50 cal rifle, I bought .490 balls and put one down the barrel with out a patch and it fell straight down the barrel. I thought the ball was supposed to catch on the rifling, if only the patch makes contact with rifling how accurate will it be? Should I be using .495 balls?
@BlackPowderTV4 жыл бұрын
That's what it should do with a ball 10 thousandths smaller than the bore. You're good. A patched ball is a bit different than say a pistol. The patching tightly imprints on the ball and binds in the rifling and at discharge you have obturation or it is pressed into the rifling as it is pressed slightly oblong. Depending on the gun .490 or .495 may work better. For a .490 ball the patching should be .18 or thicker.
@soulfirexit3514 жыл бұрын
@@BlackPowderTV I got a old 100% cotton dress shirt, I figure I'll make a bunch of patches with that and bore butter.

Is their a reason why you are not using a 1/2” cushion wad over the nitro card?
@BlackPowderTV4 жыл бұрын
I find they don’t help my groupings at all and if lubed to keep the fouling soft they blow through my shot producing a doughnut shaped pattern on my target board. I find a nitro card, heavily soaked in melted lube serves just fine. 👍🏻
