I suggest putting th smaller shot under the ball to prevent bridging and creating ablock

I’ve heard that concern and have tried it both ways thousands of times without any problems or notable differences either way but it seems, at least by common sense, that your suggestion is advisable. 👍🏻

I don't know if he'll get back to you, this video is two years old with no activity since. I don't know Bob's current condition, but may try calling him today. He lives on the other side of my county. I didn't see him at the last two shows. Bob all the best to you if we don't make contact today. But I can tell you where to learn about authentic reproduction rifles and all sorts of things of the early America, and that's at American Longrifles website (ALR). It's free but it's very family oriented and no BS is tolerated. The most knowledgeable group of folks I've found in 20 years of longrifle research and planning. I've finished one and have a few more started. As I'm a fabricator-type person, I made my first "authentic to history" muzzleloader. I have no idea about Veteran Arms, but the boys at ALR will very likely know. Let me recommend that you consider a Kibler kit, if you're not handy with tools but could assemble a CNC'd gun and do the finish work. Styles are limited, but he'll keep adding styles. I have considered a kit from Clay Smith for a Type G Carolina Trade Gun, as Clay is quite an expert on what is and is not correct for those types and a good gunbuilder. He puts up videos under "The Grumpy Gunsmith". Sometimes Clay has longrifles/smoothies for sale on his site. He always has kits. But know that only Jim's (Kibler) kits are "easy". Most everyone else uses different (non CNC) equipment to cut their patterns, such that tooling wear and tolerances will likely cause some "extra" work to be done in fitting it all together properly. If you just want to purchase a ready-made gun, then catch the classifieds at ALR, but learn before you leap. We have some great makers building new ones every day, but they get proper money for their work. Second-hand guns (by the same makers) can often be had for a little less. Lots of AMM folks and historians and such at the ALR. Check it out--and please utilize the SEARCH feature to really extract a lot of great information/advice without postlng endless novice questions (they have all been asked and answered 22 times before), THANKS for that. Enjoy the site and learning and your flintlock when you get one. Also there's a blog called "Contemporary Makers" by Art and Jan Riser. They post nearly daily. HTH.

Hey thanks for the post. Wade’s response below is excellent. I’m on ALR pretty often and though I don’t post very much anymore I do respond to DMs there regularly. All the best builders, the most talented shooters, and the best teachers are there. Definitely sign up. I agree the Kibler kit is the best option for a first time builder. Ive done several and they are super easy and extremely high quality.

@@BlackPowderTV Hey Bob, it was only after I posted that I saw you'd been keeping up with your commenters here. Great then. Yes there are other things--I'm involved in Vintage "Hickory" Golf now where we use old clubs and often have to fix them, and or replace a broken shaft. I've even found a book on clubmaking the old type and may very well fabricate a bodock putter for myself. But I still keep an eye on ALR. Much continued better health to you Bob!

You are better off using straight Ballistol to finish off lubing the inside of the bore. It doesn't go rancid or gum up like greases, especially animal fats.

Planning on using my grandpa's TC New Englander, .50cal this year for whitetail. I like the idea of roundball for ammo, and I'll probably go for precut patches until I get more experienced. Would bacon grease work for a hunting lube? I also saw your video on powder, but I can't find a consistent charge amount recommendation, probably go for goex 2f. What am I missing? Thanks!

Aloha sir, i’ve been watching your channel for years, and have been binge re watching a lot of your content lately. I just got a Traditions percussion Kentucky Long rifle kit, finished it up and have been hunting sheep with it, and will soon be adventuring after goats. Bagged two sheep already😆. I want you to know that you’ve been a big help recently, and given me much inspiration over the years. I hope you are doing well, and that life’s been easier on you. Take care!

I was 2 mar div 86 thru 90. 3/6 kilo co. What was your unit? listening to this I have another simularity. 3 years ago my 12 year olds (my youngest) and I were playing wi8th a can of 4f Goex making little piles and burning with a trail of about 4 feet. Piles abot the size of a serving of Peas for dinner. 5 minutes after one of several piles was pouring another pile and there oas one ember unseen by me obviously. as I was pouring it shot up the stuff spilling out of the can so fast from about 3.5 feet and exploded the can in my left hand. Blew the square metal can round and blew out the top and bottom. Loud as hell kaboom. Scorched my jeans but otherwise unhurt just a little rattled. my youngest who watched it from maybe 10 feet away Thought I had to be hurt, but nope not a scratch. Where in Tennessee are you from? My mom's people are from stewart county, Dover mostly. Would be interesting if another coincidence. I got a vibr yhoiu'll be good to go on the cancer thing. I hate all these lawyers trying to make a buck of folks at Lejeune that may have peen toxified by the water, and one of the effects they say was kidney bladder or prostate Cancer they tout the years fro the 50's to 80's, Possibly you were there during what ever that window was but it's worth a shot, if you haven't already looked in to it. Yup VA sux bigly Semper Fi mac or as I like to say Simpli-fy

I've been hunting deer with percussion for 30+years and aside from the load in the gun I'll carry 2or 3 speedloads (I like the T/C best)in shirt pocket and a belt knife and pocket knife , flashlight to get in and out and stay off of snakes , a piece of rope for a drag if I get lucky . Just about every thing can fit in my pockets .

I've been shooting percussion for 30+ years and been thinking about a flintlock. This helps but concerned about the humidity where I live affecting the pan charge.

On a humid day I do what they did originally when the gun needed to be charged for any length of time. Seal the pan closed with a little bees wax. 👍🏻

I use a round whiskey flask that's tough and water tight. And in the center is a tin shot cup that comes out, holds precut patches. But that's all back up. I make premeasured loads in pop top containers that held diabetic test strips. They fit in a shot shell belt. Waterproof, pop the hinged lid and dump down barrel.

Hey Bob thanks your great Beginners series. New to Black powder have a 40 cal Lancaster style flintlock. After your video on finding twist rate looks like she's 1:48. Atm I shoot 395 cal round balls with 010 lubed patch 50gr 3fg powder and she does good out to 100m. ( palm sized groups) would I be able to shoot minnie balls and if so what starting charge would you recommend

Hot soapy water followed by a hot water rinse. The warmed barrel will accelerate evaporation. Dry it out and follow with a good gun oil inside and out.👍

So i wamt to ask as i guess i was told wrong. I have the same hammer you so and have sharpened my dlints a couple times to good success it seems. I was told to use the pointed side of the brass hammer and strike edge to edge. Like two swords. That way you end up creating small circular like saw teeth in the flint as you go across the edge. Have you ever heard of anyone doing it this way? Its worked for me although it doesnt take off too much material and actually seems to ding up the edged side of the hammer but what are your thought's?

If you mess up drilling your touch-hole or buy a rifle second hand that has the touch-hole drill too low or too far forward or back you can easily fix it. Most locks have enough metal thickness around the pan that you can take the lock off the gun and working from the back side of the lock use a dremel tool and a grinding burr to grind the pan a little deeper or remove a little metal on one side of the pan or the other to center the touch-hole up on the pan. It's a ten minute job that anyone who is the least bit handy with tools can do.

Lol, looks just like the POG's that would get attached to our Infantry platoon so they could earn a CAB, every whizbang cool guy operator item money could buy. I'm toting a possibles bag everywhere, fire kit, stainless steel canteen/bottle, emergency blanket, knife, and some kind of cordage for ANY expedition in an outdoors environment, but a decent sized belt pouch holds that, plus your cleaning stuff.

The 1:48 twist in a TC (is a compromised configuration) has shallow rifling so the conical bullet can seal in the bore and still allow a PRB (patched round ball) to hold the rifling at lower powder charges. When higher powder charges are used with patched round ball the rifling and grove depth is needed for the patch to hold the rifling.
