I’m consistently amazed at the intense bias in the anti tourism movement as well as the Marxist adjacent nonsense that totally undermines valid concerns over things like water rights. The real villains here are likely the local government. Instead, the blame is placed on the hotel owners. If they bribed someone, you need evidence of that. There’s nothing wrong with developing a hotel, and a hotelier should not be blamed for wealth inequality. Wealth inequality, by itself, is not necessarily morally wrong nor problematic in any way. (I’m sure that will spawn a lot of poorly thought out arguments, so please, think before you attack). As far as the minimum wage, if employees are taking these jobs willingly, that pretty much tells you there are no better jobs. Did the hotels buy out the local industry? What was there before? Did the land get taken by force, or was it sold to them? Are water rights in Mexico normally handled this way, or is there corruption here?

Yup. In Jamaica a bunch of tourist hotels/resorts have blocked local access to public beaches - forcing fishers and locals selling to tourists to walk miles and miles to walk around the fences.

Classism, racism, and colonialism are closely intertwined. At its heart its laissez faire capitalism. Unequal protection under the law. Laws that bind the majority and protect the few. But do not bind the rich or protect the people. One could be in a "white" beach or mountain town in the 48 states. When investment capital, developers, and state level politics get together, public infrastructure gets hijacked. Utility rates are restructured. The town is transformed into something the locals don't want. The charm of the place is destroyed. What is left is traffic, pavement, soulless franchises, exclusivity, paying monopolies to use overloaded and trampled natural public spaces. The only solution I can see is progressive taxes on wealth; spent on truly public infrastructure. Schools, parks, libraries, nature preserves, clean energy, traffic calming, public services, labor rights, anti-trust, etc.

@@artfulalias3984 Bruh I got like a 3 page long response from a descendant of a sugar plantation owner about a beach's nickname, she was ranting on me being a haole for not using the Hawaiian name of a beach which I've never come across a single person who calls it by that name and I rock with Hawaiians and Filipinos on a weekly basis. Her family basically ran the Islands police system, bank system, and industrial business system while never hiring a single Hawaiian and she's over here calling me the worst type of haole... Pretty clear her family was some of the main ones who lacked Ha but never lacked money or power.

Hi! I'm Oaxaqueño, and I happen to have study in school thay sent students home due to lack of water (I am not sure if it is the same school, maybe there was more than one. I don't know.) My school is near the city center, housed in the repurposed building of a historical monastery. The effects of tourism in our student comunity have been huge. Of course, the highlight in this video is the fact that we were sent home halfway through the day due to lack of water (which we recicle, as mentioned, using what we collect from the sink to flush the toilets). Class were suspended for a few days until the administration was able to get in contact with a pipa company to provide us with water, having to pay out of pocket (this is meant to be a public school, but teachers and students are often forced to collaborate and gather money to provide us with materials and other necessities). That is not the worse thing that has happened to us as a result of tourism. About a year ago, the city's police doubled down on street vendors, forcing them out of their places of bussiness, one of them being outside of our very school. There were violent alterations between the police and the vendors trying to protect themselves and their belongings. I didn't see anything, but I could hear the noise outside, and I believe at some point there were gunshots, I am unsure. It was hard, because many of us bought lunch from the people that were being arrested outside, and we were hungry and scared. They had to evacuate our school for safety, we were escorted through the city by our teachers (who are, as far as I am concerned, the bravest people in the world) to a safer location. This all happened as part of an effort to make the city "prettier," more "tourist friendly." To this day I deeply resent the goverment for using violence and putting actual lives at risk for the sake of appealing to foreigners. There is a stark divide between the "touristy" parts of the city and everything else. They only maintain of the roads or provide water to those "pretty" areas that people from outside will visit. Even then, though, you may see children begging in the street, or homeless people sleeping in the sidewalk. It's the contrast between the (mostly white Usmericans) folks that visit, well dressed and pampered, and those of us actually living here. All while migrants from the south are looked down on and punished by the goverment. Regarding my personal life, rent is unaffordable. Mother makes a decent enough salary as a doctor in a public hospital, but she has a second job as a therapist because otherwise we wouldn't be able to make ends meet. The hospital my mother works at struggles to get funding and have to make do with the bare minimum while the goverment subsidises the tourism industry. You get used to a lot of this precarity when you grow up here. I didn't question most of this stuff until I learned English and talked to people from all over the world to realize that going weeks without running water wasn't normal. I am glad there is someone spreading awareness about this stuff to a broader audience. I hope you will be safe, Mexico is not kind to honest journalists. I cannot thank you enough for writing and publishing this video. If anyone has any further questions regarding the situation in Oaxaca specifically, feel free to ask. This affects all of us, not only those working in hospitality, and particularly it harms indigenous populations. Maybe international awareness is what we need for the local goverment to get their stuff together.

What do you think about all the gringo volunteers who work at the hostels or in hospitality in exchange for accomodation (usually not earning money)? Is this a well known thing in Oaxaca? I know it's probably the owner's fault for not hiring locals and instead hire foreign volunteers to work for free, but what do locals think?

Yea they started cracking down on the street vendors a couple years ago... in san miguel. And yes the locals can't afford to eat at the restaraunts. I've been aware of us gringos coming here and changing the landscape. Rent prices are ridiculous. I also have trouble paying these high prices. This video has made me think again about what is going on in the tourist industry. I'm not sure what the answer is.

Over my lifetime, there has been a criminal concentration of wealth. When I was a kid, a CEO made 25 times the pay of one of his workers. Today, that iniquity factor is 344:1. When I was 18, I had a job at a seed store making $300 a month. Joined the military and still made $300 a month. But, back then, the value of gold was $58 an ounce -- so I was making 5 ounces a month. My first car cost two weeks pay. My first motorcycle cost a month's pay. Today, the equivalent to what I was making ... 5 ounces of gold ... would be $13,000 a month. And there is no way the person making it would be an 18 year old fresh out of high school.

There are now more Native Hawaiians living outside of Hawaii than within due to touristification. Our culture and islands have been exploited with little care for the locals. We lived in a green Volkswagen Westfalia on Maui for 6 months back in 2000. It was heartbreaking to see all the BS that was going on there. Not just the tourists, but the Richie Riches that bought everything up and priced out the locals. The same is happening in my small town in Colorado now. It was written up in the NY Times maybe 20 years ago and hasn't been the same since. Rich A-holes pushing out the locals. Lots of second home owners - there's an entire neighborhood that is pretty much a ghost town! Property taxes skyrocketing. Newbies threatening to sue their neighbors. Their attitudes are something else!! We HATE them!

As a mexican who has seen the impact of tourism and gentrification in both Oaxaca and Mexico City I deeply thank you for publishing this story and not complying with the corporate overlords, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I would also advise any journalist both national and foreign to be very careful when working with local media companies or US based-Mexico focused companies. They might seem eager to work on actual real journalism that denounces social or economic problems in Mexico (mainly for political reasons), but all these companies are part of the same three or four conglomerates who have their tentacles in all kinds of shady businesses. In Mexico, if you dig deep enough, you'll find these conglomerates involved or related by family ties to very bad things one way or the other. Also remember Mexico is one of the most violent countries for journalists in the entire world, but not for all kinds of journalists, more often than not you'll realize the ones that disappear in mysterious circumstances are not those who work for N+ or El Universal or TV Azteca, because they always comply when situations like these happen, it's the independent journalists who put truth over profit who get silenced.

This is actually so important. I'm Chicana and I've been wanting to explore more parts of Mexico in my adulthood. Oaxaca has been one of those "trendy" and romanticized destinations on Tiktok and IG but I have never seen this aspect highlighted, mostly because this is not an issue that is reported on. I'm also torn about the living wages in tourism as I work for the top hotel employer in the world. Seeing the wages being offered while knowing how much a hotel room night costs is actually appalling. These companies entice job-seekers to sacrifice a fair living wage with the hopes of job security and opportunity to grow. I know Oaxaca is not the only place being affected by this so props to you for shedding a light.

Corporate Sponsors affect News Coverage. For example, in Local News coverage in the US, local TV stations will NOT run critical stories about Car Dealerships. Why? Because car dealers are the #1 sponsors of local TV news. For the past 3 years, car dealers have been charging "Market Adjustments" which are basically 10K commissions that car dealers put on top of the Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price. But there has been little coverage of this from local TV stations.

As a Mexican and some heavily into enviormentism and Human rights, I really appreciate this. I tried explaining this stuff to my parents about Constellation and corona production drying up water from their home state and they didnt believe me. Not until my cousin in mexico who is politically active, brought it up himself in conversation. Bathing like the way you described actually happens all over México. Thankfully there are more vocal people now. If anyone is interested in helping water equality and sustainability, there is a great project model being worked on called Islaurbana. They are trying to help supply water to everyone.

My mom is a travel agent so we got to travel frequently - I was in Cancun and I adored my time in Mexico we walked around the markets and bought souvenirs and I never wanted to leave. I have spent 30 years in the travel industry around Yucatan peninsula and what you present is a comon issue woth low wages and abusive labor practices. Hello Bianca, the facts you pointed out went off like a light bulb to me, I recently lost my Mother she would speak of her father with much love and admiration he was of Zapotec. I'm employed within the tourism industry in the Pacific Northwest . After being self employed for 2 decades and eventually coming to terms with the inevitability of negative cash flow if I tried to stick it out... I realized that I have skills and motivation that make me marketable. So I ended up being an employee of a short term rental company. My employer / Owner / Manager of the company , is someone who takes 'Business Vacations' He travels with his family - And returns with more money than he left with. But when he has problems , He comes to me for help.... Before the tourism industry, there was Timber and Fishing Do I like it ? Would I change It if I could ? Maybe - But I consider myself fairly fortunate, for a guy who makes so little money that I don't have to pay taxes.

The azcarraga family it's famous and hated here on mexico, they have corrupted generations defending some of the worse governments we've had. Famously, during the massacre of Tlatelolco, a government massacre where hundreds of university teachers and students where executed or imprisoned during a Pacific manifestation. Where the Olympic games where being hosted on mexico, we had students trowed In makeshift holding cells just milles away from the tourism. What did the news, owned by this family said during all of this? The infamous phrase "hoy es un dia soleado" today is a sunny day. No reports on what was happening, other than small mentions saying violent protestors where apprehended. México corruption it's not just cartels, the very roots of the things that should protect us are rotten.

Y como ciudadano de a pie, puedo confirmar lo que dices con respecto a los salarios, la escasez y el acaparamiento de agua. Creo que un tema que también es muy importante de no olvidar (o tal vez resaltar) es el papel que tienen los arrendatarios (landlords) en la alza de los precios de la vivienda y como se prioriza para alquileres de corto plazo (p.e. Thanks for sharing this information. The same issue with the water happens in other states. I have family in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur. And they also have to buy water from the “pipa” but the hotels never tell anyone there is an issue with the water.

I live in Oaxaca and own a company here. You are right; the problem is not the tourism but the low wages companies pay to their employees. In our case, we pay significantly higher than the minimum wage and continuously increase their salaries based on performance or the company's revenue, which decreases turnover in the company. Although all the riots here should be more focused on demanding higher wages because it does feel unjust to blame tourists or newcomers for what people are getting paid. I've lived in cities like Calgary in Canada, which went through multiple recessions, and I have to say, you are not grateful for what you have until you don't have it. My point is that when a city's economy is performing really well, everyone makes good money, more businesses open, more employment is created, and everyone is happy. If tourism were to decline in Oaxaca, I can see more people being unhappy than they are right now. Until a few years ago, most Oaxaqueños needed to move to bigger cities or, even worse, to the USA to find a job, risking their lives because it was so hard to survive here. Things are not as bad as you think I have seen and lived worst I feel you in the censorship that you are going through keep it up with the good work and thanks for caring for the people in Oaxaca

Do you live in Oaxaca? Are you Mexican? Do you have any life experience in the downturns of a city and its economics? Mate, you should think before giving your opinion these days everybody thinks they have to have one specially in topics they don't know anything about. Opinions don't change the world. Are you against something? get out of your bed and do something about it. Besides paying our employees fairly my company makes a difference donating and planting 1000 trees every July to help with the water issues this state is going through. Besides creating jobs we donate uniforms and other school supplies to communities in the Sierra Sur similar like this girl mentions. I rather "erase centuries of colonial context". .. (Or whatever that means) and help to create a good future for the kids living today and the ones that are coming tomorrow.

Things are not as bad as you think?! I’m guessing you’re not one of the people who has to go for months without running water. I bet you are not recycling your toilet water. Do not invalidate the horrendous experience of so many unfortunate citizens because of your privilege. We also used to live in caves. Just because you say it’s not as bad as it seems doesn’t make it okay to go without basic necessities such as food and water. Humility and compassion goes a long way.

I live in Oaxaca and this girl never mentioned that people goes without water for months. In this city what they do is docify the water for 30 or 40 days so households fill their tanks and make it last. FYI at my house we experience the same thing and for us thats enough water for up to 2 months! and I actually conected the water that comes from our laundry machine to a separate tank thats connected to the toilets. And at our company we filtered the water that we use to wash bottles so we can re use them several times before use that water for plants. You like most Americans or people in general ust love to complaint and make up stories in their heads. You have 0 knowledge of this city just 10 - 15 years ago Oaxaca was one of the poorest cities in the country for the past 60 years most Oaxaqueños needed to move to CDMX or big cities or move the US to find a job and make a living. Oaxaca tourism exploded because Mexico unlike most countries didn't closed its borders during the covid and so thousands of nationals and foreigns came to work and eventually stay for good.. That definitely brought a better economy to its recidents the fact that many companies don't pay their employees fairly is unfair BUT is part of the transition. People like you might rather live in caves and say "i own my cave and no government will take it away frome me" before wishing a change for your city. . Instead of complaining and make up stupid assumptions get out of your bed and try to make a difference or don't I don't really care... There is no hope in the frigile generation that rather see other people living and complaining about how they are living it.
