This is a beautiful violin solo! The way Gabrielle plays allows the instrument to convey not only her utter commitment but her tender feelings too. I have watched and listened to it now many times and at the very end her slightly self-conscious smile portrays her gentle humility in a truly wonderful way. I hope perhaps to see her play more solo pieces but in the meantime I want to thank her and wish her every happiness and fulfilment in her work.

Biber is one of the best composers of all times, but also probably one of the most overlooked. If this poignant Passacaglia isn't a Masterwork, I don't know what can count as such.

I abosolutely agree with you. Biber is a hidden treasure.

There's something remarkably stirring and evocative about Biber's Passacaglia. Such a simple initial bass line that blossoms into a series of incredibly clever variations; it just captures you and pulls you in for its entirety. I'd put it up there as one of the greatest pieces ever written for unaccompanied violin...next to Bach's Chaconne of course! Perhaps there'll be a Voices of Music recording of that magnificent work from one of their incredible violinists one day? ; ) Wonderful recording and performance. Thank you for yet another gem! - A young early music fanatic

I challenge the Bach Chaconne Orthodoxy! Biber's Passacaglia is unbeatable in terms of both complexity and emotional expressions in a way that Bach's very particular demands don't allow; a gorgeous masterpiece, I'd argue Bach's Chaconne is too focused on technical aspects rather than allowing those playing it room to breathe and make it their own in comparison to the similarly brilliant, innovative Passacaglia which can express so much more feeling depending on who is playing, their mood, the passion they put into it. I don't know, there is something... truly special in terms of shear gorgeousness of Biber's Passacaglia. Je ne sais quoi. There is something deeper to Biber's masterpiece, something to be unfolded so differently by each who approaches rather than 'as a test' as it can feel Bach's Chaconne can be where each player tries to simply demonstrate the greatest mastery - not using the piece as something through which they can express themselves without feeling the pressure of a technically focused test...

@@cbpolitico I completely disagree with you. I play Chaconne and yes it is difficult but it has saved my life. I completely melt into the dept and complexity of the piece. It talks and speaks life and pain and beauty. I feel my emotions come up to the surface and take me places no piece has ever been able to do. Biber's Passacaglia is absolutely magnificent and definitely lighter but it will never compare to Chaconne. ❤️

I've listened to quite several interpretations of this sonata, and I do appreciate really a lot Gabrielle Wunsch's one: the sound is perfect in long notes (listen to the transition at 5:20 !), pure without any vibrato at all (I don't like it for baroque), it sounds just marvelous; progression is natural, easy, the sentiment expressed is exactly how I like it: it's wonderful, thank you !

Gabrielle’s heartfelt and virtuosic rendition brings forth the Guardian Angel to bless all those who hear the music. With each variation that sprouts from the grand and captivating bass line, she takes us deeper into the chambers of our inner silence and our bonding with the divine.

Gabrielle takes a relatively common cannon and infuses her most pure qualities into a solo performance and thus reveals her fine pedigree as a player. If only others could take the torch - meanwhile, she does do so very well" now. WOW.

With four simple notes emerges a universe of possibilities. profound and simple at the same time. Higher consciousness resides in the realm of mystery. this piece transports the listener there. The discordant sounds unify. The variations one can almost anticipate

I heard this specific piece where I live and I know that it requires a lot of creativity and strength to bring to life the same four notes that you hear from the beginning to the end of the music. Every variation has to be unique, without leaving apart the main theme. Wonderful interpretation by Gabrielle Wunsch and thank you for sharing it!

There is something more in Biber's music, especially this Passacaglia. There seems to be a recent prominence in his work...or is it just my imagination? I wish someone would write more about his life and his passions. What does he wish us to feel? What is the passion that he inspires?

You said it @Sforzando26....There's something remarkably stirring and evocative about Biber's Passacaglia.....to which i would add Calming. its stirring and calm at the same time, at least as GW plays it at this tempo..like Kempff's bach on piano...it soothes me as it makes me waht to cry, or just breathe deeply. The lid was painted by Millicent Tomkins, based on 17th century originals. Sadly, Millicent passed away recently. You can see an interview with her here, where she talks about her art: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGmkZoVur8Z_gck
