Krik of Black Owl Outdoors introduces you to the first stage of our exposure test on the legendary Bic lighter. The goal of test is to assess the amount of abuse a Big lighter can take from the weather and still be functional. On November 11th 2014 we placed a full Big lighter in a designated spot in the wilderness. Since initial placement the temperature has gone below freezing, resulting in snow, and soared into the 50's, promptly melting all the snow. Will the lighter light?

Great idea for a test and video guys. I'm betting with you Krik. I think the Bic will do fine all winter.

Survival On Purpose Yea, I think it will still work next winter. It's under the canopy and won't see any direct sun (which may evaporate the fluid faster?). Time will tell.

A fun skill to learn is to soak it in a river for a week and then get it to light again. This was one of the tests at the Pathfinder basic class that was one of my favorites to learn and practice. Looking foreword to seeing this little guy again in the future :-)

Great idea, I always hear people say (smokers/pot smokers) how they break down all the time, im not a smoker yet never had a problem with one. Ive had the same one in my backpacking stove for years and years, same one next to my fireplace fir several years, ect. I cant wait to see how this pans out. On a side note, I would have put out 3 of them. All in different areas/terrain, but in the same general vicinity of each other for the video

Good video. You can't beat bic lighters. I've dropped them in streams and they still light. I always carry one or two of them. My motto is ( KIS) keep it simple. Carry a bic. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy & be safe!

Interesting experiment and I wasn't expecting it to function too well. I propose you also test out something called an upside-down fire. Fire doesn't necessarily need to climb, but as it radiates heat equally in all directions, a top-down flame pre-heats the fuel below it. You get a more efficient burn with much less smoke.

Great experiment! I've carried a Bic every day for 25yrs and aside from the low temp sensitivity, or being just plain outta gas, they work every time. Really angers the true primitive fellas crouching down throwing sparks at tender when you squat down and fire your tender with one flick lol. Looking forward to the rest of the testing! Thanks

Maybe you should get several bic's and leave them in different elements for a month. One in a container of sand, one in a container of mud, water, snow, freeze one etc. I think that would be a cool experiment. Love your videos, keep it up guys.

Bic and Cricket are the two top disposable lighters out there. It would have been interesting if you had put one of each out there to see which one failed first.

What a great idea. I found a lighter at old campsite (along the PCT in northern Washington) that was clearly abandoned for years in the wilderness. 2nd flick it fired to life.

Got a long project ahead of ya! Had a Bic still work after having been accidentally dropped in the woods three years earlier here in WI. They'll probably last longer than that just know that one lasted that long. Even after the butane is gone can still get dozens of fires from a Bic. None of the other brands of disposable lighters work nearly as well as Bic in my experience.

An exposure test I did a few years back was to soak a ferro and a chunk of fatwood in a bucket of water for two weeks. Took 'em out, shook 'em off and had flame in a few seconds. Fatwood scraping with the spine of a knife yield flame in five scrapes or less on a ferro most of the time. Compact, waterproof, reliable, fast, cheap and easy... what's not to like??!

Its fun to have multiple ways of fire making in your kit but when i want a fire and don't want to mess around the first thing i grab is my Bic. Interested to see how it holds up through out the winter season.

There are Bics and then there are Bics. Check the wind guard to see where it was manufactured. I've never had an issue with any Bic stamped: Made In The USA nor the ones that are stamped: Made In France, but I will never again buy one that is stamped: Made In China. It's not a political thing, it's a quality thing. The last time I struck a Bic lighter stamped: Made In China the strike wheel snapped free from it's mount, the spring loaded piece of flint shot out of the lighter and popped me right in the eye. Not kidding. It hurt for months. Ever since then I always, always check where the Bic was manufactured before I buy it. Peace.
