I’ m Japanese. US Steel is ranked 27th in the world in terms of steel production, right? There are 13 Chinese steelmakers at the top of that list? How do you rewind? Biden. I think it would have been clever to find a way to take advantage of the goodwill of our ally, Nippon Steel Corporation, the world's fourth largest steelmaker, and take advantage of its terms of acquisition.
@nuntan3 күн бұрын
100% agreed, especially when you consider the fact this merger with Nippon Steel, the fourth largest steel manufacturer in the world, would've made US Steel a part of the third largest steel producers globally. Instead, US Steel remains the 27th largest (and falling).
@jogana69093 күн бұрын
This has nothing to do with ranking. US needs to keep its own steel company, which is national security.
@jonath77223 күн бұрын
@jogana6909 I cite this ranking because the global market share of steel production affects the number of steel mills in operation. It is a historical fact that the company has closed steel mills and reduced the number of workers as it has lost market share;. If US Steel could have rebuilt its steel mills on its own or with the help of Cleveland-Cliffs, there was no talk of this acquisition in the first place. Cleveland is not likely to actually have that much extra cash. Even if the U.S. government backs this project, fewer steel mills in the U.S. and higher purchase prices for its largest customers will only end up costing U.S. taxpayers more or raising the purchase price of the final product. If the U.S. public is prepared to do that, that's fine. No, I don't think the largest consumers will accept cost increases until the end. I think there will come a time when they will cut it off as a supplier. Hopefully it won't be one less steel supplier before our security is compromised.
@parodynet30042 күн бұрын
Biden is absolutely right. They are giving Japan too much power and decisions are then directly coming from Tokyo. What if a war breaks out? America needs full autonomy on this matter. I agree on the fact that the US governance failed their steel production sector and should invest on it and bring it up to modern standards. I think protectionism is not bad in light of how many companies are already owned by foreigners in the US, the country urgently needs more patriotism. I guess it is a bit hypocritical of them cause of how they always talk about free market but Japan has blocked many acquisitions as well for the same reason ''national security'' so I don't want to hear that double-standard. I only hear hypocrisy from Japan, be it war crimes or treatment of foreigners etc. Giving the US steel to Japan me be beneficial short-term but not long term for the US. It's no guarantee Japan will stay our allies. There is already a lot of animosity against America in Japan. I guess Japan only portrays America in a bad light and a country with zero reflection on WW2 is doomed to make the same or similar mistake and imagine now that America's steel factories is in the hand of the Japanese? It's disastrous.
@gunmarcyan2 күн бұрын
@@jogana6909 You mention security, but did you know that the special steels used in GE and P&W jet engine blades are made in Japan, and Japanese manufacturers use Japanese precision machining equipment to precisely machine the blades before exporting them to the US, where GE and P&W assemble their jet engines? Japanese companies are involved as suppliers in both fighter jet engines and SpaceX rocket engines. Even if we wanted to make products in the US that perfectly meet specific customer orders, such as special steels and heat-resistant steels, these special steels cannot be easily copied with manufacturing patents and know-how. The reality is that the US cannot keep up with domestic demand without importing steel. It would be great if we were prepared to not import any steel at all, including special steels, heat-resistant steels, and cutting-edge electromagnetic steel sheets.

Right now, China is producing steel in quantities far exceeding global demand, causing prices to collapse. In order to survive in this environment, steelmaking technology is evolving every day, such as hydrogen reduction steelmaking that does not use coke for reduction, high-tech steel, and steel made by controlling the microstructure using nanotechnology, and I believe that using these technologies is the way to survive in the steel industry. It is unfortunate that US Steel cannot use the new steelmaking technology that uses the advanced technology that Nippon Steel possesses.

I think it is good that Nippon Steel did not try to acquire US Steel, which would be a burden, out of concern for the American steel industry. I will answer based on that premise. I think that due to the current US policy, Japan will stop buying expensive American weapons and start manufacturing them domestically. I also think that the Self-Defense Forces will become a Japanese army, drive out the US military, and move in the direction of acquiring nuclear missiles. China will probably move closer to Japan.
