As much as I love watching Biffa fix traffic in horribly congested cities, I'm puzzled how everytime none of Biffa's easy fixes are applied beforehand. I mean, these people who send this in watch his videos right? Set up your roundabouts, do your lane mathematics, don't make too many lanes. These things alone can almost fix any city. But then again, if everyone did this, Biffa wouldn't have a job so what am I even complaining about?

6:24 The problem with making it "Realistic" is that the AI drivers aren't realistic, they make real life drivers seem like geniuses. AI Driver: "Well I'm going to be turning right 12 exits from now so even though the right hand lane is backed up across all 12 exits I think I'll just sit in the right hand lane with everybody else while we gridlock across the entire map." If you do good lane mathematics, limit the number of intersections on your main roads, and designate turn lanes and thru lanes in your exits and intersections; suddenly the AI will actually use the other 5 lanes in those big super 6 roads. Being "unrealistic" in your road creation causes the AI to act more realistic.

I think another good option to help the city's traffic would be to buy the squares 'north' of Alexandria district (assuming 5:02 is how it'd look on a map) and add another highway & junctions heading into the city center. Looks like all the cars have to go through that one clover interchange to get to the rest of the city. Adding in a direct road to the rail hub and expanding the passenger lines throughout the city couldn't hurt, either. Something for the player to think about if they see this comment.

13:21 The road going FROM round-about to the junction must have its lines accessing both lanes, otherwise you're forcing people in left lane to always leave in one direction. Like.. don't force the cars to pick their lane back in the roundabout, mate.
@Axelerati0n5 жыл бұрын
In these situations I find what usually works best is to not use the lane connector but the lane arrow tool. Choose which lanes you want to go off the roundabout and allow them to change lanes in that node with the junction restrictions. This way they are obligated to go off but can still choose which lane they need on the next junction. I can't explain why but for me this works better than creating an extra node in between roundabout and junction and allowing them to pick their lane there. It looks like the way the game works, changing lanes on an intersection happens way smoother than on a straight road. On straight roads they often come to a full stop and turn their car 90° sideways to change lanes, which obviously backs up traffic behind it. On intersections, they don't tend to do it that way for some reason. These are my observations at least.
@edmlds5 жыл бұрын
Why shouldn't they be forced to pick a lane at the roundabout? To me it seems that if both lanes have access to both lanes entering the highway they would end up crossing in front of each other and slowing traffic even more.

Maybe someone had a little too much tea haha
@superdau5 жыл бұрын
The angle of the road when coming into a roundabout is really important for high traffic roundabouts. If cars have to take a sharp turn (the one around 21:30 is one of those bad examples), they take longer and have problems getting into the roundabout, because they won't have enough time to enter before the next car in the roundabout arrives, so the game won't let them.

One problem I find with most of the cities Biffa fixes is that people use the two vanilla interchanges (the Y/T interchange and the cloverleaf interchange) and these two alone cause plenty of headaches. The vanilla Y interchange uses 3 lanes on the terminating highway, even though there are only two options to go on (left or right). That can be fixed by downgrading the roads to two lane, but I see most people handing in their cities to Biffa don't do this and just leave the 3 lane highway. Also, the merge lanes still end up being too short and the vanilla AI dont "merge", they just cross to the lane they want to go. The cloverleaf have the massive weaving problem, and in real life are only designed to handle light to medium traffic, not the entire load of 2 freeways. On the PS4, I replaced a pre-built cloverleaf with a hand built stack interchange and it just did wonders (could have been even more efficient with TM:PE but what can you do).

I'm the one who said something, and I didn't complain that it was "unrealistic". I said that the point of lane mathematics is to force the AI to fill additional lanes instead of queueing in one lane. So leaving only one lane defeats the point of lane mathematics. As you just said yourself, having a highway go down to one lane at a junction is fodder for a "driving fail" channel. Thank you for unintentionally supporting my criticism.
@BoldlyGoing5 жыл бұрын
@@JCPRuckus Ah, you're one of those people. The one that loves twisting peoples' words to suit their narrative. No, the driving fails channels are just that, videos of people failing to drive properly. I was referring to seeing one-lane highways in said videos because that's the most common place I've seen them aside from my own city. So, try again. And I'm fairly certain lane mathematics, in reference to Cities: Skylines anyway, is to get the AI to not queue in just one lane when there are other ones they should be using. So, getting rid of all the options and just forcing them to use one they should be using anyway, is the whole point. I feel like there's just something you're not paying attention to. But, it is the internet so that's pretty common. Have a nice day, John.
@JCPRuckus5 жыл бұрын
@@BoldlyGoing - Except they shouldn't all have been using the same lane. That is why you don't leave only one lane as an option, because you are creating a choke point and *forcing*all traffic into one lane whether it belongs there or not. Very specifically, in the first spot he did that *most* of the traffic wanted to be in the leftmost lane to go into the cargo harbor, but *some* wanted to go past that to a further junction. So by going down to one lane he was forcing the bypass traffic to queue with the cargo hub traffic instead of bypassing. *It's bad design* because it works in opposition to the theoretical benefits of the process of using lane mathematics (which is to get bypass traffic to bypass), and as a point of professional pride Biffa should not be teaching people bad design.

Halved your traffic or doubled your flow? Just me being picky? IMO halved from 4% would've been more than 8%.... I'd stick to doubled flow :) Love you Biffster.

Here's the thing, I'm american and in america we call roundabouts traffic circles but I watch your videos so much that I call traffic circles roundabouts anyway, same with yields, although I only say give way instead of yield in city skylines

According to the Traffic manager documentation you do not need to draw the lines at highway merges (highway entry) as long as your "lane mathematics" checks out - I dunno, could save you some time

I'd love to see a challenge where you have to fix a city without ANY mods, or DLC, just the base game (and the woeful lack of road options). Really put your skills to the test. I tried it and...it's VERY limiting, so you have to get really creative.

I've done it, videos on my channel 👍😁

Honestly your problem is low road connections to highways. Connect normal streets to highways is super uselful. Cars that dont need to use roundabout. Use street highways connections. And reduce traffic by 70% on intersections.

And Biffa's done it again!! Well done bro, I really enjoy these videos 😊😊

I'm tempted to send you my current city. Traffic is around the 70% mark and I've tried a few strategies like parallel carriageways to -remove the need for traffic to change lanes- merge into one another in areas where there's very little space between junctions. Doing so stopped the cars who were entering and immediately leaving from backing up as cars swapped lanes coming off one on-ramp and onto the next off-ramp. There are still a few areas where traffic is crap but I think it's down to sheer volume being funnelled into a small area (it's a park and ride hub). Also, have you tried a split roundabout? If you have a major route intersecting with a minor one, have a 1 or 2 lane roundabout, and the main road minus one lane cuts straight through it. Anyone doing so can only proceed ahead only, if you want to turn left or right you have to use the roundabout, and if you come from the minor route you have to use the roundabout.

8:12 without looking at the big picture, it really seems like the "east-west" road is where everyone wants to go. Then there is some inbound, one direction and that's it. No one seems to be leaving "north-south" from here. Should this just be a T junction?

I'm new to this game it reminds me very much of Transport Tycoon, this is the first game I've played that the game play is so much more customizable than other transport games to come after TT, I love it.

Since the highways were so close you should’ve added more lanes w/ furthest left being a straight thru. The furthest right obv as the turn off & the middle two for lane switching.

@18:40 are you high? That road you run into a 1 way underpass has no access! When you mess about with the T intersection after you stop them from turning in by changing that 2x3 to a 2x2

Loving the work. Go back to 24 minutes 57 seconds. The Subway I think it is is totally jammed. I saw it in the early part but I figured it might work itself clear
