Meditate for two hours? wow 2 hours? WOW. I have done an hour, and forty minutes often enough to know I can barely walk for awhile after, but 2 hours? Am I the only one who finds that just a tiny bit scary? One of the best of Ajahn Brahm's numberless great teachings. I'm trying to go beyond to my own insights for the sheer joy of expanding my mind. What a concept! Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu, Ajahn Brahm, from Las Vegas.

I think Budhism is about teaching humans to become like a tree/plants. Because every Bodhisata sat under a tree, the tree is the guru. Like behind every monks there is a statute of Budha. Tree/plants don't have eyes to see, ear to hear, mind, senses of touching & consiousness as the heart sutra mentioned. The plants/tree can go thru' any type of sufferings or danger, good or bad weather. Of cause a good plants/ tree which provide fruits, flowers & seeds ( compassionate).

Buddhism teaches not to cling on to anything too much. When you take a grip on anything in your mind, that thing becomes real, becomes material to you. Once you seriously want it to be in certain way, that is the start of your trouble.

but what abt monks clinging to buddhism? shaving heads, wearing robes, following doctrine, etc? and i personally am addicted to listening to ajahn brahms recordings. is this wrong?

Yup. Wrong whenever we fixate on it to the point of being that your mind can not be free from it. Monks cling to the teaching in term of learning and practicing, like we believe the concept of numbers 1, 2, 3.

there should be no expectations set up in meditation. the reason you can't find any way to improve from all the books you read, people you listen or follow is because I honestly believe you have to live your life and just sit down for a period of time with your object, or your personal way of paying attention to "the thing at the other end of the telescope" to succeed in spirituality and daily life, which become one and feed into each other. If you're a beginner, of course materials will help.

@grafplaten If you want the long answer I believe the Buddha stated that consciousness only arises conditionally dependent on contact with its respective objects ie eye+form=eye consciousness but there is no 'enduring' consciousness beyond this. The 6 consciousnesses (5 senses and the mind/intellect/ideation) are arising and passing away without a separate observer. So to speak of one mind or many minds or a collective mind is a convoluted question and one the Buddha might not answer.

@MrLifeoutside i'm in exactly the same situation, same age, still live at home but i enjoy my job and i can't afford to move out. i think our problem is pretty common. We should be contnent but we also need to get on with life in western society as well

i have a question about the craving/wanting mind. I'm at a job i don't enjoy. I have changed my attitude about it. im 23 years old and still live at home. this job cant provide me with the money i need to be on my own. So, do i remain content and be ok with my job?

@MrLifeoutside my friend, being equanimous ( free from craving) doesnt mean you can't be pro active. When a train comes your way, do you just stand there and accept it? or do you move out of the way? or both? you can be equanimous towards whats happening in your life, and still do something about it. You can accept the train coming your way, and still move out of the way. besides,if your asking this question, are you really content?
