Big Bear Eagles ~ BANDING DAY ~ COOKIE & SIMBA ARE BOTH * BOYS* 5.24.19

Cookie and Simba were banded today and they both are boys! ♥♥ Friends of Big Bear Valley decided to turn off the cam during the banding so this footage is when they have been returned to the nest. Jackie returns within 15 minutes & begins to feed them. Cookie passes a pellet at 2:54 and is on the left, Simba on the right.
Jim Campbell-Spickler and Dr. Peter Bloom worked together along with the US Forest Service to band Cookie & Simba. Jim banded them on the ground. They both are healthy and the process went smoothly! They also cleaned the cam lens!
All of Jackie's offspring have been male so far - Stormy, Triple B, Cookie & Simba. That is incredibly special that this year we have two little Shadow Junior's! They both are banded on the left leg with a purple band and a silver federal ID band on the right. I believe Simba's band is ZR1 and Cookie is ZJ1. I was excited to hear both were males as I had suspected they both were for some time! Thank you Jim & Dr Bloom for the excellent job you did in banding the BB eaglets! Thank you for watching!

Hi Paulyne I don't know where Shadow was but Jackie returned to the nest within 15 minutes after they left so she was watching the whole banding. That is one of the quickest returns by a parent I believe I have seen for an eagle nest!!!

The first thing I did was Google Jim Campbell-Spickler - the Eagle Whisperer in Images, was impressed with the photos of his caring and handling of the eaglets. Wow, I am impressed. Nice he had Dr. Peter Bloom's assistance. What an incredible job they do. We all care so much about out eaglets and it appears Jim does a wonderful job ensuring they are carefully handled. So happy to hear they are both boys, awww...dad is so proud of his boys! Mom too! I didn't know that all her eaglets have been male, what a coincidence that is. Thank you to both Jim Campbell-Spickler & Dr. Peter Bloom for doing such a great job. We all appreciate your gentle caring of Cookie & Simba. Glad it all went well. Now the boys have Bling. @R Brown They were banded on the ground, out of view of the cam, great way to do that, also easier to take a blood sample to determine if male or female. Not much room on the nest for all that to happen. Thanks for replying :)

Hi OM - yes I am happy that we have two boys again this year! I think we can affectionately call them "Shadow Juniors" ♥♥♥ There is not going to be a banding helmet video this year. I suspect that FOBBV decided to turn off the cams in case something went wrong. Last year they got a lot of negative comments and publicity on the banding process by Joe Papp (he actually dropped Triple B's body because he was not equipped to put him in his shirt on the way down) and many viewers were quite upset. I really was looking forward to seeing the banding on them this year - but I am happy it went well and they both are healthy!! Take care my friend ♥♥

Lady Hawk what a shame negative comments always seem to hurt all the positive. I truly understand people might have been upset but just like Eagles we learn by our mistakes and I am sure they were more prepared this season. Plus it should have been on the good he was doing I am sure he felt bad enough that it happened so putting more shame on him was probably hard on him since he devoted his time and work to the Eagle nest to do good. Hi Lady Hawk! I had a feeling they were both boys too - no real bonking- young female's beaking young male's head, no cowering of one - or very little? (Just my thoughts - I'm still new at this). From the few nests I've seen, it's the female or bigger eaglet bonking the male /smaller eaglet. Glad the banding went well. Are the bands pliable/give as they grow? HI Stepanie - I thought they both were males too! ♥♥ They band them at this age because their leg is full grown now so the band will fit perfectly! Yes a female will be about 30% bigger than the male and here with both Cookie and Simba I did not see that size difference!

Yes that is one reason but also bonking severity is dependent upon the amount of food brought in to the nest. Both Shadow and Jackie have kept the nest well stocked at all times and the babies have never been hungry. So that played a big role in the amount and duration of the sibling rivalry!

That is Cookie and he has eaten today. Cookie cast three pellets of undigested squirrel . After the pellet he feels much better. The fur and pelt from the squirrel might be difficult on his digestion. But Cookie is fine!!

I'm so happy they had their banding day today! I only wish every monitored nest like this would take such a literal hands on approach to Eaglet monitoring and identification. Thrilling we have two mini Shadows!💙💙. What are the chances they would both be males? Interesting that Jackie is producing males only in her short history. Hi J Buggy I thought they were both males first because they were very close to being the same size. Simba is a little bigger but not by much. A female will be 30% bigger than a male. Second, both of their beaks are also similar is size and shape - female's beak is larger and deeper. Third, I watched their behavior since hatch and they both were equally matched in terms of aggression - a female would have been much more dominant in bonking and the youngest would have been more submissive. Yes.......I don't know why I didn't see it before ! So similar in size, almost like twins.....I didn't want to invest watching too closely, in case of a repeat. of last season. I always look for head shapes. To me, the males have what I call " streamline" shapes, as opposed to "boxy" heads of the females, with larger body size, too....Thank you, Lady Hawk.

OK, so I turned on the live cam this AM(Saturday) to see what was going on and saw they had their bands on. I thought, how did I miss that ??? I didn't, the cams were not on 😂😂. I would not have thought 2 boys. Simba I pretty much knew was a boy, but I really thought Cookie was a girl. Simba somewhat caught up in size while Cookie was off her feed. So glad to see the weather cleared up, at least for now that is. I love watching this nest. Thanks Lady Hawk for this video !! The parents will leave the nest tree when the see the people on the ground & then climbing the tree - they watch or circle overhead alerting many times! Fortunately the banding process is done as quickly as possible and Jackie returned to the nest right away (within 15 minutes!).

Thank you so much. How amazing. How do they know they are both males? If not a female eaglet to compare. I read they can tell by weight and size but Simba is bigger then cookie. This is so confusing to me. Is there another way to tell? Couldn’t it be two females? Ugh I still can’t tell them apart in the nest between Cookie and Simba. Yes I saw it succumb this morning after rough overnight snowstorm. That is why I asked that. Handling risks introducing germs. I guess baby was not as healthy as earlier pronounced this morning. 😢

Hi Blueser100 no banding does not pose any risk and does not harm the eaglet in any way. The banding process is the most successful measure that has restored the bald eagle in many parts of the country. If there was any harm to the eaglets it would not be done. And to clarify - Cookie was not harmed by the banding and was healthy along with Simba. Cookie died from hypothermia and that healthy eaglets succumb to it as Triple B did last year with the harsh weather in Big Bear.

How do they get to the nest, remove the Eaglets, clean the lens and whatever else w/o Shadow and Jackie attacking them in a protection mode? Plus I always heard that humans should not touch the young (birds) because the adults would avoid them altogether, not true? Man o Man she is really ripping that fish up and looking around often almost like she's agitated

Usually they observe the nest and the parents so they will arrive and return the babies without the parents seeing.

Hi Richard - that is an old wives tale - about not touching a baby bird! The eagles have very poor sense of smell and it does not make any difference whether a human handles any bird! They are careful during the banding process - they wear helmets in case a parent dive bombs them! Most of the time they circle overhead and vocalize.
