Big Black Bear Relaxes in Hot Tub in Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

A black bear soaked in a hot tub as the sun rose over the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee early on March 20.
Mason Trebony was holidaying in the area with his wife when he witnessed the wild bear climbing onto the deck of the cabin he was renting.
In this video, filmed by Trebony, the bear is seen moving up a small set of steps before going into the hot tub which is filled with warm water.
“There’s a wild black bear in the jacuzzi getting warm, unbelievable,” Trebony says in the video. “(It’s) just having a blast.”
Trebony told Storyful that the bear sat soaking in the hot tub for 15 minutes before it climbed out and returned to the mountain.
The US National Parks Service estimated that roughly 1,500 bears live in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

LoL!* *Black bears do charging and stomping. Especially when there are cubs close by. By they typically climb trees and run away. They are scared of humans. I have to take a wildlife awareness course every year. And I also have to take a Bear Awareness course every year because I work in the bush.* *I run across 6-12 of these bears every single day. In May, I see 20+ a day.*

It was probably a rental cabin. Those are all over the Smokys. I was in one last May for a week. Same view. Was amazing waking up to it everyday, going out on the deck and having a cup of coffee in the morning while the "smoke" was still in the mountains. 👌❤👌

There's a ton of rental cabins with jacuzzis in that area, and the bears know it. They steal food and take baths on a regular basis, and occasionally wander into town. Recently there was a case of a guy in a rental who got mauled by a black bear who got in through an unsecured door, so while some of them are docile people should always be very cautious.

Often when people walk in wooded areas with dogs off leash, dogs will react to coming across a bear and everyone gets frightened. l do hope people will get more education about the gentle black bear. And in areas where bears live nearby --- always be careful to avoid attracting bears with foodstuffs left outside!

In 2001 my father, who had been a contractor, built his last house in Pagosa Springs. He used the lever type door handles on all the outside doors. 4 total on the ground floor. I freaked out a little and explained that the extensive bear population would be very grateful once they discovered them. He saw the wisdom in that and switched to knobs. A week later a neighbor across had a bear break-in. It demolished their kitchen. They had the lever handles. Thankfully, no one was home and the bear was gone by the time they got back.

Probably a rental. It's the most visited National Park in the country and there are mostly rentals there. I know because I live here and yeah, it's really beautiful. The black bears here are used to being around people. They'll leave you alone for the most part unless you're right up in their space.

@@artiew8718 Why? It’s literally not doing anything dangerous. Living in an area like that, he would know it’s probably often that they see bears. This one has obviously been around enough people. It’s always best to avoid them yes, but in Gatlinburg for example, some bears are so used to people they just walk away and wait for them to leave food for them & their cubs. It’s always good to have bear spray & air horns & a shotgun. But guns against bears are only used to emergencies, just like when you encounter a shark. He built a house in their territory, not the other way around.

Mothers are definitely protective of their cubs, I've also call black Bear mamas come onto my property while I was standing in my front porch, and they were pretty chill. I think it depends on if they are startled or not. (I'm talking about black bears here). In general bears don't like being startled by you. When I'm out hiking or mountain biking I tend to make a lot of noise for that very reason. I'm just giving the bears a heads up.
