Awesome! Especially the flat torque curve with the tunnel ram. I asked in my long winded reply to your comment on the stroker build video how much idle vacuum the 400 is making & I'm still curious. If you recall kindly let us know. I don't think it would differ much with any of the intake manifolds.
@JustMoparJoe Жыл бұрын
Thanks Gavin. I will check it out with a gauge whenever I get it in the car. We never fooled with the vacuum levels at idle, because all the tests were at wide open throttle. I would bet it has good vacuum at idle with the cam specs.

@gregtough9055 Жыл бұрын
@@SweatyFatGuy I get it and it's well known, but typically a straight shot tunnel loses a wee bit of torque
@SweatyFatGuy Жыл бұрын
@@gregtough9055 it depends on how big the port is in relation to the cid of the engine, the opening events of the camshaft, and how much velocity it can make. With a Pontiac increasing the size of the ports increases torque everywhere in the rpm range in engines 389ci and larger. Its so pronounced that one of my engines, a 467 pump gas build with a solid 270/279@.050 110LSA cam was making over 650ftlbs at 3000rpm and carrying it to 5500. Put that cam in almost any other engine, especially one with short runners like small blocks and B/RB wedges and its not going to come anywhere near making that much torque anywhere in the RPM range. The old cross rams made Pontiac like torque on the B/RB engines, they have very long runners. There is a lot going on with airflow through ports and intake manifolds.

I didn't think with the tunnel ram the torque numbers would be that good either looks like a pretty good combination I guessed 530 horse 465 torque wonder what a crank scraper would do and using a thinner oil

Thanks Robert. I am using a windage tray, and 5w30 oil currently.

Great numbers but I bet those valve springs aren’t very good. The power drops off way too fast at upper rpm With that Cam and solid lifters it should rev better and peak around 6200 and carry to 65/6800 no problem. I would call PAC and get a good set of springs
@JustMoparJoe Жыл бұрын
I’m not saying it’s not possible, but it’s not probable. I tossed the edelbrock springs and Ed installed some new crane springs. 165# @1.86" and 400# @.540" so easy on parts.
@bcbloc02 Жыл бұрын
If it’s not valve springs maybe it’s the push rods whipping. Something definitely causing an issue at higher rpms.

Hey Joe, I posted this 8 months ago about putin 440 heads on a 400,I said to do it you had to use a 440 intake because I did it in 80 on a 73 charger 400 I owned. It was very fast, Blake said I was wrong about the intake, what did you have to use, 440 or 400 intake? Sounds great and gd numbers buddy
@JustMoparJoe Жыл бұрын
Thanks Dizzee! You’ll be one of the first people to see the engine run in the car! As for the intake, you can use the 383/400 intake on a 440 with the adapters, but the 440 intake is too wide for a 383 or a 400. Hope that helps.

I have a 72 Charger ..New 400... I used an Edelbrock RPM intake #7186 and an Edelbrock Carb # 1407... I have heads from 383/400/440 and they all work on a 400....... Just installed Lokar kickdown.......best idea yet

Hey Joe, your 400 block, with Trick Flow heads and a turned down (to 400 size mains)crank can make over 600 horse power. If you check out AR engineering ( Andy Finkbiener) there is a lot of information on big block mopars.
@JustMoparJoe Жыл бұрын
I have no doubt. The goal of this was to see what it would do with the stock stroke. I could probably write a short book on the discoveries of this engine and how it’s such an underrated platform.

@@JustMoparJoe there is a reason that B-1 heads are almost always used on a 400 block.

I'm sorry, I'm about 2 minutes into this video and I'm not liking what the dyno operator is saying and predicting what will happen with the tunnel ram. I understand that there's a common myth that tunnel rams are for high RPM, but that is a myth. (Just look at the first graph.) But someone who supposedly knows engines enough to be a dyno operator should know better. Longer runners tend to produce higher low to mid-range torque. They can also sometimes push up the RPM peak for horsepower.
@DragCadRacing Жыл бұрын
However, Joe I suspect that you already knew that before he opened his mouth. 😆
@JustMoparJoe Жыл бұрын
Thanks brother. I agree,my life of seeing tunnel rams on the racetrack says the same. Aaron was helpful with the dyno and is very familiar with it. But he’s not familiar with big block mopars. The other myth is that the short stroke of the 383/400 can’t produce the torque that a 440 can. I think we are crushing that one too! Hope you check out parts 3 and 4. I promise it all gets better!
@pokebass1 Жыл бұрын
I have a hard time trusting a man who thinks that a tunnel ram will make less torque than a Performer RPM. It's as if he doesn't know a thing about high performance intake manifolds.
