What I am really stunned by is how late that torque kicks in vs a 440's. My uncle had a really fine tuned stock 440 .30 over, with the exception of heads, done exactly like your 400 here... balanced, decked, squared, etc. His torque started at just under 2500 and peaked at 4000. Yours comes in later on every single combination. That definitely kills our running theory about stroke/bore vs deck height being the main component of the torque curves. This build of yours is shattering a crap load of illusions, even a lot of old diehard mopar nuts like my family! My dad saw the tunnel ram vid and couldnt believe a 400 could pull this much power with basically a good top end. I'm rather pleased that you are doing this whole configuration test with exhaust on it. Really shows the realistic power numbers.
@JustMoparJoe
@JustMoparJoe Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing that! My dad was the same way. It was 440 or nothing for him. This one is going in my racecar but I’ve got different headers or exhaust in mind. Hope you come back for part 4. It’s a game changer!

Short stroke spins up quick torque range will be in higher rev range especially with the single plane shorter runner intake with smaller cross sectional area than the T Ram its longer runner adds considerable to the velocity of the air at slower engine speeds.

Its nothing to do with the B vs RB for that... all in the valve springs. Hardest part is getting light enough valve train and good enough spring pressure to go higher than 6500, they just float otherwise. Not sure if you've ever heard of the overhead cam RB that mopar developed in the 60s, rumor has it that the 2 prototypes could push 10000 rpm albeit with absolutely no power over 7000 because of the intake/exhaust manifold designs.

Well Joe, it's been fun watching so far. So far I think I was low on my HP guess by 7-8 and about 30 low on torque. I sure wish you had a bigger 4150 carb for this test. Ultimately the port size is keeping your engine from making more power, that's why they make Max Wedge right ? Is the header reducer really 2.5 inches? If so I would expect a 3 inch to help with the power you are making now. Looking forward to 2 PM.

Awesome build Joe, can’t wait for part 4. If the 493 I’m building runs half as well as this thing I’ll be ecstatic! What are your thoughts on main studs and girdles for stroker builds… necessary or no? I’m going to be limited by my heads because the pulling truck class I’m aiming for is limited to iron only; the old Indy iron heads are hard to come by, so going to run a set of worked over 915s for now.
@JustMoparJoe
@JustMoparJoe Жыл бұрын
Thanks brother. I have heard from many guys that anything under 600 hp doesn’t need the girdle. I think the caps walking does happen, but mostly at higher rpm. I would fly it and watch it. If you’re going N/A, then it should be good. Adding the ARP bolts or studs(with line hone), should help.

@JustMoparJoe
@JustMoparJoe Жыл бұрын
Thanks John. I had set the premiere early so it didn’t mess up anyone’s Friday afternoon plans. The performer rpm had the earliest rpm pulls. It would be the best all around intake for the street and allow some hood clearance. Aaron stopped pulling so low, as he could tell that peak torque was coming in around 4,700 with all the intakes.

Great work. Rarely seen motors for here { Oz }, the B's and RB's. 361 being in old trucks, as in 60 to, 70 year old jobs. Love the big bore compared to the L.A. engine! However, does the wide bore lead to detonation?? It seems to like the Revs too! The dissy at the front, ticks the box, for me big time. Rather than the bonnet straddling, acrobatic agony; required for working the dissy! Great stuff men. cheers. I will have a few for Yous! Would you go 361 B or 360 L.A. ? The 370 I am breaking in and starting to tune, is a 360 with 60" oversize bore. It only cleaned up at 50", from a standard bore, it was that worn. Have fun and once again, have a good day, to all !
@JustMoparJoe
@JustMoparJoe Жыл бұрын
Thanks for following along. The 361 may limit you on affordable aftermarket pistons. I don’t believe the 400 to be more prone to detonation, especially here, because of the efficient heart shaped combustion chamber and quench distance with the flat top piston. The 361,383,400 all have the shortened stroke, which really encourages revs. This engine makes 500 foot pounds early on and holds it. The beauty is that it will snap up to that rpm much quicker than a 440. The beauty of a 360 is the longer stroke tends to provide better torque than the 318.
