As a Ford guy I’m pretty happy seeing Mopar stuff on the channel, it’s different from the norm. I’d really like to see a set of Kaase SR-71’s for a BBF make their way through there for a review. They seem to be the new darlings now. Even the older P-51’s would be cool to see.

Ok this is my $.02 , Mopars are very different from others , , Rod ratio is a longer above 1.8 on a stock 440 & still above 1.7 on a 512 stroked build , so the piston moves faster in the middle stroke & stops longer at both ends of the stroke this increases velocity in the head & continues to fill the cylinder at the bottom with the piston stopped & allows longer combustion time as it initially moves away from TDC slower , this has a huge effect on the effectiveness of the ports & requires very different cam grinds ! I have never struggled to make great power with "small" Mopar heads

Good review Eric. I thought the heads flowed pretty good considering the cross sectional area. I have used several sets of 270s and had real good results. I can't wait till you test a set of 270s. Thanks again. Take care, Ed.

B-1s ported are beautiful things!...easy 8 sec ride when done properly. I run 270 TF on my #2 back up 496...650HP on a 10.6 engine is very easy. Also keep in mind most 500 ci mopars don't need to be spun past 6200, to make so decent big #s on pump gas. The B1 shines at 7k and up.

All of these (save for the Brodix) are standard port. Serious Mopar guys run the Max Wedge sized port. That's what the Trickflow 270's are. The 240's with a 505" shortblock make awesome torque and are great fun in a street car. Easy engine to build as no major mods or grinding for 4.25 stroke required.

Also have the performer rpm heads. Built in 2002, not a ton of options then. Seeing some reviews on them compared to current heads, I'm debating switching up the heads too. 270 might be best for my build, bored and stroked pushing 496 c.i. now, big lobey cam etc...

Chrysler's race engine was the Hemi. 440s were a passenger car engine. Ford 427 highrise/tunnel port, SOHC and Boss 429 did battle with Chrysler 426 Hemi's untill all these engines were outlawed. That's when Chevrolet began to shine.

I built an Indy 440-1 heads (as cast mild clean up and VG) 440 (stock stroke x .030 over bore) back 30 years ago. Customer didn't have the budget for a roller cam setup so these numbers are off the shelf flat tappet and RPM limited by spring pressure. It made 730hp @ 7400RPM. It had not reached peaked HP when valve float stopped it @ 7400. And yea, it was weak on torque @ around 550lbs/ft due to the camshaft compromise. He put it in a very heavy 70's Cuda @ 3700+lbs w/ auto trans. It ran some 10.20's, with 10.40-10.50 range being normal. Those heads flowed around 375cfm if I remember correctly. So yea, there are much better heads available. The heads I used had bigger max wedge size intakes and raised exhaust ports. Any version of the B-1 heads would kill the Indy heads I used for HP potential.

Indy heads can flow 400+ with standard valve, but I know guys that make over 900hp on big bore setups with 440-1 heads that were seriously worked with chamber mods. B1 stuff is very good but more work and money needs to be put in them. Nice numbers on 440, would work great in some a body.

Thank you Eric for taking a look at the Trick Flow 240 … you seem to be saying that it is probably the best out of the box bolt on head for the guy that wants to keep standard manifolds. For the Stroker Guys (505, 512 etc) maybe (even on the street) the TF 270 would make more sense. I look forward to hearing your thoughts if TF would loan you a head?

Those flow numbers would be really good for a 240cc sbc head. I know the relatively big valves help out. Compared to something like a 240cc aluminum cleveland head with similar valve sizes these heads still hold their own.

Yes. Serious mopar guys are running B1 or Indy heads. The trick flow are best for low deck 400 strokes kits. The weight of the pistons on mopar big blocks restrict rpm. But before you count them out. A 440 stroker and stock cast heads / on bias ply tires are running faster them the s10! That's also with cast intake and manifolds!

To be fair, Mopar designed the B/RB engines to be smooth and torquey for stock, street driven cars. The 270 Trick Flow is based on the Max Wedge engines of the early 60's. The engineers understood that the standard designed heads just weren't up to the task and set about to design a better head. But they finally decided to make a radical departure and of course they came up with the '64 Race Hemi and those heads flow pretty respectably for a big block head designed almost 60 years ago. From tests I've seen on stock 426 Hemi heads, 320 to 330 cfm max flow is about their limit. And of course they were ported from there.

nice overlay I have the 440 trick flows on my street engine and have used them on customers engines very easy to make a std stroke 440 with small solid roller 640hp on pump. I also had the Stage VI heads that I modified for racing way back when... They were a good head flowed 352cfm with a 246cc runner . I have also done a LOT of B1 testing due to the bracket I was running in and they really are a solid head to work with. i spent months every day developing that head. I am surprised my bench still works lol. be intresting to see how it goes for you. also as a side note the indy 440-1 head I have had flow to 390cfm only problem was trying to find a set that the seats were put in square.

Have those heads on a 400. The size is pretty healthy for that size for about 7000 rpm. The problem with BB mopar heads is the factory port opening, it's only about the same size as in a SB chevy. They had a bigger port used in early 60's, Max Wedge, and there are heads for that size (like the 270cc TF), but the intake availability is very limited, and it's still not very big for a 500 cu in or more. You keep telling about the awful chamber of the BBM aftermarket heads, I believe it's partially because they want that you can use any (domed) pistons meant for the factory heads with them. Factory valve placement (not optimal) and angle pretty much dictates that. The B1's are much less compromised, but of course no factory parts can be used with them. There are others too, Indy Cylinder heads have a good selections of heads from mild to wild to full fill almost all needs. I personally have FBS heads on my big block. They are closer to B1's but with even higher and smaller ports, and flow pretty well for the size.

The best option would be Indy or B1 heads bought bare and worked by someone good. I love Indy stuff but what you get from them is far from being ready to bolt on. This head would actually be better on the Mopar B-block 400 (than on the RB-block 440). The shorter stroke 400 evolved out of the old 383 in the low compression 1970's. But is a strong block worthy of custom building.

I’d expect excellent drivability from this head, for a great seat of the pants sensation, over max performance heads, depending on price. I see potential for the with 400cid B-block apps, especially for the over square bore - stroke.

Until someone spells it out I guess us dummy’s will never know. I see BBM make great numbers with the low flo heads all the time. It is kore than just flo Numbers that make good power. Again Mopar has some other internal engine designs that help the entire package. Bigger lifter bores and as mentioned above the piston speed at mid stroke. I’ll always be a Mopar guy cause they are what I know and prefer. I drive a 4x4 pickup and there isn’t another truck around that can beat the old dodge trucks when it comes to tough truck and off road fun.

Simpson Speed shop's engine dyno guy made 780+hp, 700+fl;lbs with Trick Flow 270's on a 493 big block Mopar. Engine Power always build weak ass Mopars. They're a chevy show. They got embarrassed when the big block ford stroker out powered their beloved big block chevy. Even though the Ford was smaller.

You described the Mopar guy to a T. I had a "Rumble Bee" owner get pissy with me, because I helped a kid he worked with, do a cam and springs, and just some minor tweaking with HPTuners on a GM WT2500 4x4 beater and it spanked his precious yellow pickup, and sounded a lot meaner.

Let's not get confused. The Gen II Hemi design owns Top Fuel the fastest class in drag racing. It is a mopar design, not Chevy or Ford. With that, flame on with the lowly wedge comments.

Eric you might care to look at this video from Sampson’s Speed Shop. The 440 on the dyno is using TF270’s. At minute 10:10 they say that Pete is working on a six pack intake for the Trick Flow 270 heads. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpi0hZtqg8l4ec0

Why not an AMC V8 head? They have the same bore centers. They’re not that far from a440.

Surprising that 440 source head is that bad. They flow less than the TFS small block mopar heads

Sweet video!!! Please check out my 1968 Barracuda fastback powered by a rowdy 512 stroker backed by an A833 4 speed manual. I think you'll approve. 👌
