Octopods actually rival humans in raw intelligence. The main thing they have working against them is their relatively short lifespan. Part of what makes humans successful is our ability to learn over time, bolstering our raw intelligence with experience. Octopods are basically toddlers with better motor controls.

I remember hearing a story of an octopus where some British (yes it’s important to the story) fishermen pull up a net and found an octopus with all the fish, as they laid the net down, the octopus before any sailor could capture it or toss it back into sea ran somewhere on the ship. None of the sailors could find it, then hours later one guy went to have a tea break - cups of tea that’s why British, we love tea - and when he open up the teapot he found the octopus. Apparently when scared they retreat to the smallest darkest place they can find. And all I can think about is who terrified that guy must have been. I want a cuppa, it’s been a long da- oh god theirs and octopus!

2:40 if you gave an octopus a human lifespan, and a sort of underwater keyboard with text to voice, it could navigate human society, from preschool to retirement, so long as we could find jobs for it to do. Same with corvids probably. They learn faster than parrots. With a parrot lifespan, and a proper education, a corvid could probably do it.

0:14 reminded me of things I write involving a certain OC of mine who likes to completely muck up the laws of reality in his general vicinity just to see what happens before hopping settings when he gets bored. Where that bit of this video comes in is that the audience is never made aware of what exactly he's done, and usually aren't even made aware of his presence past a single cameo during which he breaks the fourth wall (much to the confusion of the viewpoint). There's even one particularly weird time where he *is* the narrator but pretends that he doesn't exist while he's physically interacting with the world, resulting in frequent mentions of people talking to themselves or to the air when they respond to his running commentary.

I am actually a writer who writes primarily in the self-aware unreliable narrator style, and honestly? People seem to love it. Of the three books I am writing at the moment, the one that has the most active and largest readerbase is the one with this writing style - the others are a third person narrative. It makes for an entertaining story!!

Octopi have a sense of humour too. There was one in the petting tank at the aquarium in Townsville that would play with people and then lure people in so their faces were closer to the water so it could spit a stream of water in their face and then it would flee
