I was 17 and borrowed my Mama's car for my sister and I to drive to Horris Ward's funeral home and pay respects to Chief. I remember Hovie sort of holding court in a suit with white patent leather boots. Almost comic on a sad occasion. Months earlier we'd visited the Assembly of God Tabernacle to see Chief direct the magnificent Golden Stairs Choir ca. 1971-1972.

He was so kind & caring. I have always remembered when we went to see the Statesmen. I was so small & he picked me up & talked with my Mom for awhile during a break in the singing. He was always precious to me. He sang even lower than JD.
